Can't get imported wav file to play in Cakewalk Pro Audio 9
Yes, I know, it's antique software, but it sure has served me well for the past 16+ years. Now I've begun using Band-In-A-Box 2017, and I can generate RealTracks wav files (as opposed to the MIDI files I had been generating in a much older BIAB) which I am using for writing melodies and arrangements. However, when I try to import a wav file into my Cakewalk, it says it's there, I can see it, but when I hit play nothing happens. I am a Windows 10 user with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. This computer is only a year old, a HP Envy, if that helps. I thank you all in advance for any assistance you can send my way.

Does anything else play from Pro Audio 9? I would think you couldn't even install it on W10. Obviously if you've been using it for 16 years you know about the settings for ouput. What driver mode? Is your audio interface driver set to run at the same sample rate as the wave file? well it would play but out of pitch.

I almost said the same thing! I'm amazed it even opened on W10. So + 1 to purchasing Home Studio and then everything will work as expected for another 16 years! If you do go with a newer version of Cakewalk. you just might want to transfer the midi files from BIAB. Last time I tried the demo of BIAB it was about on par with Cakewalks TTS-1 sound quality. You can certainly do much better than that with Home Studio. There are many few free VST's that are out there which I'm not sure if BIAB allows you to use.

I have a 13 year old Pentium 4 3.0Ghz 2GB RAM Dell Laptop with Sonar 8.5 Producer and Windows XP. Still boots and runs if I ever get a yearning for nostalgia! I was disappointed when neither my Ableton Live 5, or my Midi Quest 9.0 XL, would install on Windows 10. Oh well, that's progress!

Okay, everything appeared correct (thanks, Johnny V), so I just coughed up the fifty bucks and am in the process of installing the Sonar Studio. I'm sure I will have more questions for you guys. Thanks a million for helping me! My creative juices are running yet I was spinning my wheels. A very frustrating place to be, so again, thank you so much for the suggestions, and I'll be checking in with you again soon, I'm sure.

Now, I will be able to combine audio (wav) files with MIDI files in this Sonar Studio, right? Great time to ask after I've already forked over the dough, right? It's now downloading. Let me know, if you have a moment. Thanks!

First thing to do once installed is go to preferences and set up your audio interface. If you don't have an audio interface , set the driver mode to WASAPI exclusive. It works pretty good for me on this laptop I have at work with Home Studio. I don't record any audio, I just fix up midi files to make backing tracks. I added a few freebie VST's to boost HS meagre offerings. The big difference is BIAB is limited to 32 bit plug ins ( last I checked) and Cakewalk will use just about any 3rd party Plugs and VST's. So your sound pallet is potentially enormous. It why I use Sonar, you get a lot for your money. I also bought Air's Strike2 Drums from the JRR shop for just $43. I think it's still on sale. It is amazing and holds it's own to all the big name ($$$) drum VST's. The SI bass that comes with Sonar is still my go to bass. I use the Jazz bass setting.

I have a huge library of soft synth sounds that I picked up after getting Pro Tools 10 about 4 years ago. Are you possibly suggesting that I may be able to use those sounds in my new Sonar Home Studio? If that's the case, I will be busy (and creative) for decades!

Holy Moly! That's a whole buncha instruments! Thanks so much! Alright, here's my first problem: my MIDI sounds are starting a little late, a consistent delay even though it says they land right on beat two in the file, they're starting to play at about count two and a half. Without resorting to guesswork on every future project, what's the fix for this? (I am not finding a "slide" feature under Edit which I was used to in Cakewalk, but I never had to use it in the way I was tempted to just now.) My MIDI input is my Midiman MIDISport 2X2 In B, and my MIDI output is this Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. I use a Midiman Keyman 49 MIDI keyboard for inputting music (notes), and I have noticed that ever since I got this new computer a year ago, the sound is delayed when I press a key. Could that have something to do with it? Thanks again, everybody!

They will only work in Sonar if they were supplied in VST format. If not, check out the $1 deals at Plugin Boutique. They will qualify you for a very cheap upgrade to either the AIR complete collection version 3 upgrade for $74.95, or the SONiVOX Premier Collection upgrade for $69.99. I have both and there are more sounds in there than I can use in a lifetime. The Sonivox Collection includes all of the titles in their Film Score Companion, which lists for $249.99, plus a lot more!

OK, for starters head to Preferences > MIDI Devices, and uncheck all of the physical devices in the output section, unless you plan to play back sound on your external MIDI hardware. If you are playing back via soft synth as your sound module, you don't need to activate these ports. Especially the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth!!! Make sure your MIDI input is selected here, so that it shows up in the MIDI track input selection list. Then Insert > Soft Synth > [*pick one from the list], and insert as a simple instrument track. This will be your MIDI sound generator. If you set up your audio drivers correctly, you should not get any noticeable delays on playback this way. *Your choices are probably Cakewalk Sound Center, Studio Instruments, or TTS-1. Are you using the onboard sound chip on the computer, such as Realtek or something like that? If so just follow the advice from Cactus Music above, and you should be good to go! Good luck!

Anyway, for a minute I had figured out how to slide the tracks but I don't want to do that every time I use this. They need to be exact. What am I missing? Thank you for your help!!!

Yes I was wondering about your audio set up. So your using on board and you can expect latency. It's a given> But we are finding the new WASAPI driver is not bad compared especially to the MME mode. Does your keyboard come with a USB driver? Seems ones that do perform better than the ones that depend on windows drivers. My Roland A49 has drivers and is super responsive. I also have an Akai Synth Station 25 that does not have it's own driver and it sucks compared to the Roland. Sonar will probably be able to use any of your Pro Tools VST's. Only hang up might be anything that was Pro Tools or Mac only format.

I would just skip the TTS-1 for now until you get the basics sorted out. Try the piano in Studio Instruments or something simple with one sound. Get that to play, then explore. Speaking of basics, please provide these details: 1. What is the name of the MIDI port that your keyboard is setup in MIDI devices? Is it using a USB driver, or are you connected via 5 pin MIDI DIN cable to the Midiman Midisport 2x2? Look in Edit > Preferences > MIDI Devices > Inputs. What is selected here? 2. What audio driver is Sonar currently using. Look in Edit > Preferences > Audio > Playback and Recording. At the top of that page is Driver Mode. What does it say? What options are listed in the dropdown selection? 3. What kind of MIDI file are you trying to play back? Is it a single track, or a multi-timbral arrangement? 4. Can you play the keyboard and hear the soft synth make sounds?

Does your keyboard come with a USB driver? This Midiman Keyman 49 MIDI Keyboard is something I bought in 1996, and with the exception of four moves around the country it has stayed plugged in and powered on and is the most amazing little thing. It uses an old-fashioned MIDI cable into the Midiman Midisport 2x2, which then plugs into my computer via USB. 1. In my device manager it says: Port_#0002.Hub_#0001 — using your instructions I find: MIDISPORT 2x2 In B 2. What audio driver is Sonar currently using. Look in Edit > Preferences > Audio > Playback and Recording. At the top of that page is Driver Mode. What does it say? What options are listed in the dropdown selection? It is set at WASAPI Shared, and the options in the dropdown are: WDM/KS WASAPI Exclusive WASAPI Shared ASIO MME (32-bit) 3. What kind of MIDI file are you trying to play back? Is it a single track, or a multi-timbral arrangement? I have four individual tracks: a trumpet, tenor sax, trombone, and an oboe track. They are all unison, but the trumpet and oboe are an octave higher than the tenor sax and trombone. 4. Can you play the keyboard and hear the soft synth make sounds? Yes, I’m hearing the trombone-like MIDI sound. Also, there is zero delay when I press a key, which is good! Again, thank you for your help! I look forward to solving this mystery. You guys are the best!

Small issue but we get better latency with WASAPI Exclusive mode,,, change to that. Sounds like your coming up to speed fast. Good news your midi is real midi ( 5 pin) and not usb so the midi sport is your driver an should work well. Abacab is awesome at sorting things out so stay with him. +1 Don't forget to use File > Save as > [select Normal for a Cakewalk .cwp project file]. If you re-save the project as a .mid you will lose a lot of things, that aren't part of the MIDI spec! Don't ask how I learned this the hard way I find that the GM (General MIDI) sound set in TTS-1 is a great starting point for a MIDI arrangement. Probably the easiest way to use an existing MIDI arrangement is just to open it up in Sonar. In fact. it's the only multi-timbral GM synth in Sonar! But as you progress, it might be desirable to add some better sounds to your arrangement. You can do that on a track by track basis, as needed, by inserting another softsynth into your project with the desired sound on a new simple instrument track. Then you just go back to the MIDI track that plays that sound, and change the output to reflect the new instrument you want for that sound. TTS-1 will not play that sound anymore since you just re-assigned that MIDI track to play a different softsynth. Most softsynths are mono-timbral and will only respond to one MIDI channel and play back one preset at a time. So you may need several instances of other instrument synths. Say one for bass, another for drums or percussion, another for piano, another for strings, and so forth (those should be provided in the Cakewalk Studio Instruments bundle). Some sounds in TTS-1 are good enough to leave in a mix. Your ears should tell you what you need to change, LOL! You said earlier "I have four individual tracks: a trumpet, tenor sax, trombone, and an oboe track." I'm afraid that you are stuck with TTS-1 in Sonar HS as far as those instrument sounds are concerned. But you really should take a look at the $1 deal for AIR Xpand!2. It has those 4 instruments and more among the 2500 preset sounds. They sound pretty good! You may have seen this one already if you used the Pro Tools instruments. And it is multi-timbral for up to 4 parts. It's become my go-to synth for changing up sounds lately.

Good stuff as always John, Scook pointed out that if you have no midi devices selected for OUTPUT in Preferances/MIDI / Devices then Sonar automatically will load TTS-1 when you OPEN any midi file. Never import always open a midi file. And as John has said this is the best starting point as the file should play the way it was composed. All tempo data and program changes, effect setting the whole works loads up and plays perfectly. The trouble starts when you want to change patches. But first as John has said you can track by track upgrade your sounds buy inserting other synths and pointing that tracks output there. This is why I keep my midi tracks as midi tracks and never use the simple instrument track which puts the midi data in the same track. For Bass I use the SI Bass. That makes a huge difference and even though I have many other Bass VS I like this for my Backing tracks, It comes through a PA perfectly and I sometimes have to listen to see if I used my real bass or not. Most of my backing tracks were originally made on an Atari using a Roland MT-32 and later a Sound Canvas which were both the root of the GM format. Patch number assignments have changed so my Bass part often is Crystal or a Alto sax, You made need to try a few different things if this is the case. If you want to change the patch Sonar does not keep changes made within TTS_1 GUI, you have to use the dialog in the track inspector. But even that doesn't work and especially if there is a patch change in the middle of the song! For that I actually found the only solution was to open the song in Anvil Studio ( very crude sequencer) and change the patch there.

Some sounds in TTS-1 are good enough to leave in a mix. I use midi sounds to compose, and when I put midi tracks into Pro Tools, I assign them to the best soft-synth sounds I can find. But you really should take a look at the $1 deal for AIR Xpand!2. I did that last night. Everything that was suggested I followed through on . . . the only money I spent was those two $1 deals. Thanks again for those great tips! Scook pointed out that if you have no midi devices selected for OUTPUT in Preferences/MIDI/Devices then Sonar automatically will load TTS-1 when you OPEN any midi file. Never import always open a midi file. I am now there, and greatly appreciate this tip (emphasis mine, above). I have bookmarked this thread and will likely refer to it often in the days and weeks to come. Again, I appreciate all the freely shared expertise like you can’t imagine! Unlike a trumpet forum I’m on, the suggestions here are always good and have not screwed up one single thing, so I have boatloads of gratitude for you guys here!
