Can't record other than at 16 bit

This is rather odd:

1) I open and old project that has been recorded at 48K/24Bits but the control bar reports
is at 48/16; by checking the audio file info for the project I can confirm that the audio files
are 24 bits;  Oooops it looks like a bug.

2) In preferences I have the "Audio Driver Bit Depth at 24 and the sampling rate at 48Khz; however,
new project are still recorded at 48Khz/16. I can see this information both on the control bar and
by checking the audio files for this test project.

3) As a final test I took the file mentionned in #1 and recorded a new clip; while all the other files
show 24 bits new clips recorded are all recorded at 16 bits

I'm using a M-Audio Delta 1010LT soundcard which has been working perfectly fine with S7 & S8.5

Heeeeelp!!

Sounds like Windows is also using your soundcard.  as windows sounds are all in 16 bit you can't change the settings in SONAR. What you need to do is change windows to not use your 1010.

    mmm....something is definitively wrong here.

I weent back to my good old/trusty XP (32bit) desktop and I found the same issue where
cakewalk doesn't want to switch to 24bits after I set is in the "preferences".

Note that it does recognize the 44.1 to 48 change.

To avoid any potential conflict I turned off my on-board audio-chip in the CMOS thus
making my M-Audio FastTrack Pro my only active audio device. This means that by default
windows uses channel 1 & 2 of the fasttrack.

I run the wave profiler, it recognizes the fasttrack, confirms it runs at 48; using the
m-audio gui I can also confirm that the fasttrack is configue to run 48Khz/24bits.

Just like I did last night on my new daw I opened an old project I knew had been recorded at 48Khz/24bits (confirmed by checking the project audio files) it is still
    stuck at 16bits.

Don't tell me I am going to have to remove/re-install this sucker $%&^*()

That's your problem. If you allow windows to use the Fast track then it will lock it into only playing in 16 bit because Windows sounds are all 16 bit and Windows grabs the sound card long before any other program can eg SONAR>

Don't disable your on board soundcard. re-enable it and allow Windows to use it for Windows sounds. Either that or turn windows sounds off completely.

I'm a bit confused though in your first post you say you're using a M-Audio 1010lt and in your last post a Fast Track pro.

still the same principal applies as I said in the very first post.

Goto Preferences/File/audio data. Be sure Record bit depth is as you want it and that render bit depth is also.

    I have 2 desktop and 1 laptop running X1.

On my I7 based desktop I am using the delta 1010LT; with my old XP bases desktop and vista based laptop I am using the fasttrack.

Note: I will further play with the windows sound but note that when I upgraded all my machines to X1 (from S8.5) I made no changes to the audio devices available on each machine.

For now I'll continue wasting more time with this; I have been a Cakewalk user since version 1 (yes 26 years) and this by far my most difficult upgrade ever.

It's only a click of one check box to disable Windows sound. It's worth a try. I've been doing this for a long time too. What I'm talking about is completely independent of any SONAR version though because it will happen in all versions if you have Windows using the same sound card that SONAR is using and you want to go to 24 bit in SONAR.

Re:Can't record other than at 16 bit 2011/08/09 14:58:49 (permalink)
    Well,

    1) I enable my onboard sound chip
    2) I set windows so that it uses the onboard audio chip
    3) I set the windows sound option to "no sounds"
    4) In preferences I set my devices to run at 48K/24 bits and I have confirmed that the
audio is in a 48K/24 bits mode
    4) I run the wave profile; as it is looking for WDM devices is doesn't see my
        on-board audio.

---- no good......X1 is still stuck at 48Khz/16bits ; note that I can change to 44.1K without
                             a problem.

Note: Render is something I know was in S8.5 but unless it has changed name I can't find
              under Audio in the preferences.

I found something interesting/odd: The "Record Latency Adjustement (samples) device is
    set to my onboard audio and CAN'T BE CHANGED to my Fasttrack device;

So now I have it. I go back to what was working (on-board audio disable, windows sound
set to no sounds, windows set to use my fasttrack device by default) I remove X1 entirely
anddo a fresh install; I'm running in circle and I have 0 patience for stuff like that.

But thanks for the suggestions/comments; it was worth trying.

Make sure the Fastrack is your Record Timing Master, and as John has pointed out, File > Audio Data is where you set the bit depth for recording. The one under Audio Drivers is for playback only.

wellllll...it's one of those things where you are so stuck on something you think everything goes that way.
I was so stuck with the Audio section of preferences, which also have sampling/bite rate nformation I simply
    ignored your "file" word.

But bingo, here it is, this nice well known window where the bit depth was actually set to 16 and the render
to 32....I changed the bit depth to 24 and now it's working.

The pleasure of learning a new i/f.

Merci pour ta patience/thank you for your patience

Glad you got it worked out. I was stuck in the same place as you - in your first post you mentioned preferences so I didn't go there again but of course there are 2 sections where bit depth is set. doh!
