Cannot Install Platinum
Fine installing on desktop PC but no luck on this HP Envy with Win 8.1. Problem is an onslaught of error messages while installing "SONAR Platinum". (Melodyne, Rapture, etc. seem to have stuck.) such as: --------------------------- Error --------------------------- C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared DXi\Groove Player\GroovePlayer.dll Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3. Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation. --------------------------- Abort Retry Ignore --------------------------- I've tried in Safe Mode (some installers don't work in Safe Mode). TIA for any assistance.

Did you try running as admin?

Hi John to quote from a MS support page MS Community Error 3 means "path not found". It's because the DLL or OCX is missing, or a dependency is missing. Most likely, the setup program was unable to write one of the files. This can be caused by having a file in use, or insufficient Windows permissions.
Make sure nothing else is running when you try again.

The latest err msg (and the first that pops up in installation attempts now) is about "Stretch.ax". Search shows that this is either a virus or a time/pitch stretch component... the latter would make sense. Anyone know for sure? Here's what it says: --------------------------- Error --------------------------- C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum\Stretch.ax Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3. Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation. --------------------------- Abort Retry Ignore --------------------------- Assuming that this is a legit part of SONAR, I'm also assuming that it's a dll that can't be registered. I tried (through CMD) to use RegSvr32. But that ain't working. Any thoughts?

If it was a DVD install I'd say you had a scratch b:) So I would try re downloading the files first. It's seems you must have missing code. Also Sonar often requires that your Windows 8.1 is 100% up to date etc. There is something to do with CC+ that is sometimes missing. If your using CC try a manual download. That's what I did. Then you follow the instructions for offline install. It's easy.

Stretch.ax is a component of Sonar. IIRC it's a relatively ancient bit of Directshow code. I don't quite know why I am saying this, but is your issue something to do with 64-bit versus 32-bit?

This sounds an awful lot like an overly aggressive antivirus program removing or blocking things as its installing. Try temporarily disabling it and begin the install again.

I dunno, Christopher. The OS is certainly 64 bit. Thank you for your time.

The antivirus is Windows Defender and I uncheck/disable that till it's a furious red... so it must be off. I thought disabling stuff in msconfig would stop whatever was grabbing at it. But it didn't. And Safe Mode doesn't help as some installation components work in Safe Mode. Thank you.

Thanks Cactus Music. I'll give that manual installation a whirl. I'm only able to ensure all Windows updates are applied. No idea how to check for C+ or other missing OS files. I can't even tell from these error messages what the prob is. RegSvr32 is supposed to initialize OCS or DLL's. But Stretch.ax is neither judging by the extension. And on and on...

By chance is Windows completely up to date with maintenance? If not, I suggest applying all outstanding required/recommended maintenance. Bob Bone

Manual install caused same results (stretch.ax err msg) But it looks like I WAS able to manually install the 32bit version. So as ChritopherM alluded to it might be a missing or corrupt file or path in the 64bit world. No probs on the desktop.
::: Sigh :::
