Cannot run ASIO in Sonar X2 with Steinberg UR22 and M-Audio 49i

Hello,

I am running Window 7\Sonar X2 with a Steinberg UR22, and an M-Audio Keystation 49i (USB Powered) and cannot get any midi output during recording or playback.

My audio preferences are as follows are working fine with simple recorded audio tracks.
1. Input - UR22
2. Output - UR22
Playback and recording Driver Mode MME (32-bit).  I have tried all options here and it prompts me for a missing driver for the UR22.

Midi Preferences
1. Input - UR22
2. Output - UR22

I have the Keystation routed by MIDI to the UR22.  I can see that Sonar receives the signal but no sound.  If i open the standalone version of Rapture I can hear everything.  When I try to insert a rapture synth to a midi track within Sonar, I can't hear anything.  Any Idea?

Re: SONAR X2 No MIDI Output 2014/01/04 17:59:13 (permalink)
Hello good evening and welcome....

Here is the latest driver for your soundcard:
http://www.steinberg.net/en/support/downloads_hardware/downloads_ur22.html

Please scrap WDM and use ASIO driver if you can.

When you insert a soft synth please select simple instrument track and synth property page only.
Make sure in Rapture you have selected a Patch (sound) and that input echo is on.
If you are not running Sonar X2A please download the patch.
Generally it's also best to set Sonar to the specific MIDI channel of your keyboard rather than OMNI.
If this fails please check for the latest drivers and firmware for your keyboard (I appreciate you have MIDI coming in but sometimes this can help).

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the response.  I have followed the steps and with the latest drivers for everything I am making better progress but there are still some issues.

1. When I switch from MME to ASIO, Sonar tells me that my audio devices cannot be found and replaces them with Generic Low Latency Devices.
2. If I stay with MME I can get sound but there is an enormous amount of latency.  I have the fastest buffer settings configured and the MME wave tests pass.

Any ideas?

You may want to try renaming your AUD.INI (search these threads for how).
Other UR22 users might want to chirp in.
So is MIDI working now?

In a nutshell...I can hear sound for recording and playback for midi instrument tracks but there is tremendous latency.

you probably need a soundcard.
your best bet if your not using a good soundcard is to use ASIO4ALL.
http://www.asio4all.com/

read up on it and it will fix your issues for right now, its a Band-Aid for now until you get a soundcard.

you should be running in ASIO mode as Alex has said.
MME produces huge latency results.

Good luck

Charlie he's running a Steinberg UR22 and this is capable of ASIO.
(please don't use ASIO4ALL!)...

Cheers..!

The sound card comment confuses me considering that I am completely by passing my machines soundcard by using the Steinberg UR22 interface.  How is my PC sound card impacted?

Thanks for the help everyone!!

Suggest waiting for other Steinberg UR22 users, in the meantime I suggest you change the thread title to something like:
Cannot run ASIO in Sonar with Steinberg UR22. in order to attract UR22 users and try my AUD.INI suggestion.

Again please don't use ASIO4ALL..

Re: SONAR X2 No MIDI Output 2014/01/04 21:10:43 (permalink)
I tried re-naming the aud.ini file and that did not solve the problem. Then I attempted the steps found on another post that were as follows but still no luck.

1.  I saw a note from a Cakewalk person in an older thread with a similar problem, and the gist of it was a recommendation to disconnect/reconnect the audio interface after a sample rate change to the interface.  That cleared up that particular set of issues for the other user.

2.  Also in a different thread, for the same message you are getting, I saw that had gotten cleared up by checking the box in Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording that is labelled "Always Open All Devices".  Apparently the message went away after that.

It is unclear what settings you are currently trying to work with for your interface, and what you have set in Sonar as well.

I recommend using the ASIO drivers for your interface, which do support Windows 8, and start with a Sample Rate of 44.1 on your interface, an ASIO Buffer Size of 128 on your interface, and make sure the Sample Rate in Sonar is also set to 44.1 - it must match the interface Sample Rate or weird crashes and nuttiness can occur.  I would also suggest an initial record bit-depth of 24-bit.

I will keep searching! Thanks

Try using a power supply on the keyboard an unplug the USB (possible driver conflict there). Leave the routing as in the OP where you have MIDI via cables to the UR22 and try ASIO mode if the UR22 allows.

I have a Ur22.  I suspect your conflict is with the keyboard since according to m-audio's site says it also doubles as an audio interface.  Is there a setting within the m-audio device that switches between sending midi info via midi port or USB?

I have an Ozone, and the drivers it comes with are an "all or nothing" thing... I cannot connect it via USB and not have it conflict with another audio interface, so resorted to a power supply and MIDI cables only. I suspect that the M-Audio drivers are coming online even though your purpose is "USB power."

Another thing to check is there should also be settings on the keyboard to set MIDI via MIDI ports or MIDI via USB. I posted on another thread this morning and the only solution they could get was the power supply, MIDI cables, and USB unplugged. (on an Axiom 61)

Thank you all for the responses.

After switching to direct power and disabling USB my problems have been solved.  No more latency and I can utilize the ASIO driver settings.  I think that the fact that the Maudio 49i that I am using doubles as the interface was causing the issue.

That being said it makes me curious.  I was looking in to midi controllers that have control surfaces, the Axiom61, Roland a-500 - so I can utilize the faders and pads.  I am assuming these controllers also require USB power and that I should research whether or not they double as interfaces to avoid the same driver collision.

What are you thoughts?

Most of them do not double as interfaces.  I know the A-500 works great with Sonar and I am sure there are people who have used Axiom as well.

The Axiom does not double as an audio interface, however this the thread I was referring to above. Windows should read a MIDI controller when plugged in, so the Axiom having the same issue as my Ozone and your Keystation is baffling to me (all M-Audio products). I am curious to see what M-Audio replies when he emails them from that thread.

I cannot speak to the Axiom or A-500 directly (have owned neither), but I have seen posts from owners of the Roland A-500 say that they like it a lot.

I am glad you got things working, but realize the work-around tactic is not preferred.
