Can't Rename Kontakt 5 16 vs 8 etc
I've found (supposedly) all the places Kontakt's .dll is installed and renamed Kont16.dll Kont8.dll and left the stereo as Kontakt 5.dll HOWEVER after rescaning everything, both checkoxes checked, AND restarting both Sonar Plat AND windows 10... All i see for inserting a synth are Kontakt 5 Kontakt 5 Kontakt 5 What the duece? Win10 pro build 14393 Lenovo i5-2400 3.1Ghz 4core 16Gb DDR3 asio4all v2.13 M-au Keystation pro88

Thanks for the reminder that I've been meaning to rename my Kontakt versions too. In the Browser, clicking on the Plug-ins button opens a drop down with one option being "Manage layouts." This is also an available from the synth rack drop down menu when pressing on the "+" button. Either pathway opens the Plug-in Manager. Selecting VST Instruments in the first list window allows display of the Kontakt 5 instances in the second window. Mine were also all named "Kontakt 5." Clicking on one instance in the list window selects it. Then look lower down at the "VST Configuration" section and click on the "Plug-in Properties" button. From the properties window, click on the "Details" button to see specifics. One of my instances has 64 outputs, for example, while another has 16. Trying to rename within the details window does not work. Close the details window. Now in the Plug-in Properties window, type in the number of outputs in the name box. On exiting the box, the Plug-in Manager refreshes the list and now shows the new name. Repeat for the other instances. Now the new names persist in the Plug-in Manager lists. But I found they were not yet displaying in the "add synth" tool. Closing and reopening Sonar fixed that. Perhaps refreshing the VST scan might have done the same. But after restarting Sonar, I now can see different names for each version of Kontakt. I've seen other threads about the difficulty of the different versions of Kontakt showing up with identical names as the default, so we are not alone. Hope that works for you.

Make sure the "Rescan Failed Plug-ins" and "Rescan Existing Plug-ins" are NOT checked in Preferences > File > VST settings. These options are intended for temporary use when repairing the VST Inventory.

You can rename & categorize them in the browser. You can identify them in the bottom of the browser, just click and drag to expand, to see what version it is.

Renaming in the browser (unlike the plugin manager) will survive plugin updates. Kontakt would always lose the output specific names if you used the plugin manager to set the name when a new version was released or if you did a full re-scan. The browser naming is stored in a seperate database and isn't effected by scanning/updating. In order to be able to set the name in the browser you need to make sure you switch to "Sort By Category" mode, you can't change the name in manufacturer or type mode. Then right click the one you want to rename, click the name field and give it a new name. Use the status bar at the bottom of the plugin browser to know which version (number of outputs) of Kontakt you are renaming.

AFAIK, this screen works the same as it did in the X series. Initially nothing is displayed in the Selection box above the Option entry because this section of the Cakewalk.ini is empty by default. The Selection box changes when values are added to the entry fields and Set is clicked or a selection is made Delete is clicked.

OK, the INI file set to 3 works!!! I tried the unable 8out and stereo out... But to no avail, all 3 Still show up after 2 splat shut downs and a hard reboot, but no worries as I can see, what is what. That video helped too. Ok I've learned even MORE.... In my PC file folder, kont 5 8out makes 4 stereo tracks midi or instrument tracks Kont 5 16 out makes 8 tracks Kont 5 makes the DAGG 32... TRIAL and error so the 64 jobber is the NO NAME in the pc file I spose less is MORE sometimes Oh and remeber I Unabled this KONT 5 + the KONT 5 8out thinking that would help, yet it stills shows up and loads etc Man no dirth of learning / Nerd skills YO... g

I just verified it works in X1-3 as illustrated. However in SPlat 2017.05 my window remains blank after entering the command and clicking SET. In fact, the entire window goes blank. I have to open the INI file to verify it's there. Other SPlat issues include Sonar putting Kontakt 8 and 16 output instruments under VST Audio Effects where they are uselessly unusable and after using SPlat for a while, X1-3 are unable to open without rebooting the system.

You can choose to make them not effects by unselecting their properties or does the text initialisation files override those settings.

They aren't effects and shouldn't be in the VST Audio Effects category. For some reason Sonar is scanning them incorrectly. Sonar scans them with Configure as synth, and Force Stereo unchecked. Checking them will move them to the proper list but they are still defunct and unusable.

Ok I've built a 32 track Kont instance with 64 outs or 32 stereo... BUT there is ONLY AUDIO :( So i start adding individual midi tracks, to pair up BUT my keyboard is set on midi ch 1, I sure can't run OMNI... I sure don't want to switch midi channels everytime switching from this to that...HELP!! I've made a template, assigned the Kont Aux's to not connected, saved and backed and templated awaiting the next step thx in advance g

When i did entered ini, it worked right away no close open needed i just went to add Kont, and could see what was what. Once i added a midi track and got a piano playing in my 32/64, i attempted to "make instrument" to which i got the error message, " must have both audio and midi assigned to same" which IT was... playing and all, YET no instrument track. I spose with all the tracks... it gets deep I should have followed Hel Razor for double midi/audio insert from the gate, yet i see others who do only the audio stuff, and ??? People leave out tricks in their Tutorials sometimes... I could not get midi to flow without switching midi on my keyboard... g

Ok Dave aka HelRazor... SPlat or newer Kont does not seem to rename the outs as each instrument AND i notice your using OMNI midi in... when I do this its a a complete cloister Puck.... But I didn't clone the tracks... working on it still... mmmm g

Kontakt (and all SONAR vst instruments) only has 16 MIDI channels for input. In stand-alone mode Kontakt has more MIDI ports (each with 16 channels) but as a VST there is only one input port. So you are limited to 16 MIDI channels for control. While you can setup 32/64 outputs in Kontakt, you can only have 16 unique inputs. Some Kontatkt instruments (for example complex drum kits) may have multiple outputs but still be one instrument/use one MIDI channel. As a result of this, it is isn't useful to load dozens of instruments into one instance of Kontakt. The only advantage is when more than one instrument all share the same samples. If the instruments don't share the exact same samples the advantages are almost zero. With the most recent SONAR the easiest way to setup Kontakt involves not changing the names of the 3 Kontakt plugins in the plugin-manager but rather renaming them inside SONAR's instrument browser (with it set to Sort by Category). Renaming it there will stay with the plugin through new releases of Kontakt and will survive a plugin re-scan (both of which will cause name changes made in the plugin manager to be reset/lost). The other option of using the INI file option for VSTPluginNameOption has other side effects on name change. I can't remember exactly what it was, something about changing the names of all the plugins to things that I felt were worse, I only remember hating it, but it might also work for you. Inside Kontakt it's best to setup the output channels so you can easily assign an instrument to the correct outputs. Then in SONAR when you create an audio track and choose a Kontakt audio output, it's easy to assign that output to the instrument. To do this, inside Kontakt show the Output mixer panel. At the top is a button/drop down labeled "Presets / Batch Configuration". Setup a number of extra output channels by hitting the + (plus sign) in the Outputs pannel. I have 6 outputs called SND1 through SND6. Setup to output as 1|2, 3|4, 5|6, 7|8, 9|10. Then save that as a preset and make it the default for VST Plugin (and maybe defaults for VST Plugin (8 Out) and VST Plugin (16 Out)). I'd do this inside SONAR since in stand alone mode Kontakt has limits on outputs based on the hardware driver you pick. Unless your sound card has tons of outputs you may not be able to setup everything like you can when it's a VST plugin. Then all you have to do is pick SND1-6 in the instrument (those names show up in the output drop down inside Kontakt) to quickly setup the output. I have a SONAR template with audio tracks with the correct Kontakt audio outs routed to them and MIDI tracks with channels 1-6. This way I can easily load up 6 instruments with 6 separate output. You could do 8 of course (or more), but I didn't bother setting up things I'd never need. That whole rigging (audio channels in SONAR and Kontakt with the pre-defined output channels with friendly names) I have saved as a Track Template. So not only can I use the full Project template, I can also insert it as a track template. Here's what my Kontakt looks like, notice the sound channels already setup and in use by the instrument:

Got that goin Matt, the one thing is if each kontakt instrument is carefully routed then the midi tracks seem to function fine, (thus far) with OMNI in from my keyboard allowing 32 in one instance... if my PC can handle that. G

OMNI just means the Kontakt instrument will accept ANY channel input. So yes you could load 32 instruments all set to MIDI Omni and drive all of them with one keyboard/one MIDI track. But they would all get the exact same notes at the exact same times. Odds are you are going to want a bit more flexibility than that. The better way to do it is to setup a MIDI track for each instrument, and have that track send on different MIDI channels. Then select the track you want to your keyboard to use by using the echo button on the track. (You can also have echo automaticlly follow the selected track, but I don't recommend that). If you want to have the same input on more than one track, turn the echo on each of them, arm their record buttons and record/play. All those tracks will get your keyboard input and send it on to Kontakt on multiple MIDI channels.
