Can't figure out how to use midi usb drumset in sonar x1
Hello, I've been playing drums with an Alesis DM6 electronic drumset for a while now, and I've grown tired of the unrealistic sounds of the sets it comes with, so I have downloaded Sonar X1 to see if I can get different sounds using the midi usb output on the back of the drum brain. However, I can't get any sounds out of the audio from the drums in Sonar. It is showing that there is audio input, but I don't know how to pick different drum sets in the program or hear what I am playing. Please help!

Not sure if you can do that thru usb but you can with a midi cable. Usb may be a possibility. I'm just not sure. Maybe someone on here has done it.

I'm one of the ones that don't know but if the kit does indeed send out MIDI data through usb (and not just audio) then X1 should be able to use it. Have you checked preferences/MIDI/devices to see if it's showing up? If not then you'll have to do as Jimmy suggested and use a MIDI cable which may mean having to buy a (cheap) interface.

http://www.alesis.com/dm6usbkit "alesis"OUTSTANDING SOUND The DM6 module features an internal collection of top-notch drum, cymbal, and percussion sounds that will blow you away. You can edit and save your drum kits for custom sounds. You get 10 presets and 5 custom slots. In addition to the sounds in the DM6 module, there's a USB output that sends the notes you play out as MIDI signal, so you can use the DM6 as a trigger-to-MIDI interface with drum-module software such as BFD, Toontrack, or Reason for a limitless collection of sounds. I do not own the drum kit, and I've never done this. However... Look at your Sonar Preferences. Make sure your Drum Kit shows up as a Midi-In Device. Opt for a simple instrument track with drum vst of your choice. Midi in/out is located on the inspector.

What drum mapping are you using? What's the vst you are using? Session drummer? You probably are playing the drum kit, but not triggering the corresponding notes.. notes that midi-map to the drum sounds in your chosen vst... Obviously, if you don't have your inspector set up properly you are in trouble too.

Have you tried these settings? Uploaded with ImageShack.us If your other settings are correct, you are having a midi map problem...... "maybe." haha, everything is just a guess. I'm not in your studio right now.. :-)

VST = Virtual Studio Technology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Studio_Technology Your plugin instruments, including and not limited to the extras you got when you purchased Sonar, are VST Instruments. When you say, "you have downloaded Sonar X1." Does that mean you are using the demo version? Downloaded from Cakewalk's Website? Sonar is a DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATION. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_audio_workstation I am not sure what instruments are found in Sonar's DEMO Version. Look for a Synth name'd Session Drummer. If that synth appears in the DEMO of Sonar, you must insert this synth onto a track. "A Simple Instrument Track," would be best, as you sound a little new at this. :-) When the VST Instrument is on a track, load a Preset Program from the Program Browser, found on the VST. Make sure your Track Inspector is showing, "midi in," from the Alesis Drumset. Make sure your midi is properly mapped.

Actually it's VSTi, which is a midi instrument, soft-synth, like Session Drummer that comes with Sonar. Mike Edit: Yeah! What Linear Phase said.

I have a Roland set I sometimes use but not that often. I have noticed that I can only hear audio if the sequencer is running. What I mean is I must push play or record to hear audio. I don't know if this is normal or if it's on on my setup. Like I said, I don't use it often so I'm no expert. May be something to try. Also see if you can play the drums in session drummer with the mouse. Hope this helps.

I somehow get the impression that you're not at all familiar with the concept of MIDI, nor SONAR, as you don't mention any soft synth in your opening post. If you want to replace the original sounds of the drumkit with other ones the basic procedure goes: You record your playing on a MIDI track in SONAR, then you route that MIDI to a drum soft synth which plays it using the kit of your choice. You also need an audio track with input from the soft synth. You can play live as well, assuming your computer works swiftly enough and your soundcard drivers allow short enough latency.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Ok, how about we expand a little bit on Kalle's instructions. Rather that creating a MIDI track, try opening Session Drummer 3 (or other drum vsti you have installed) in SONAR. You will get a dialog with many options. I suggest checking/picking: Create MIDI Source; All Synth Audio Outputs: Stereo; and the Synth Property Page then click OK (button). Once Session Drummer's window appears, load a drum set from the Programs option at the bottom if a set is not already loaded. You might want to unload all MIDI Patterns by left mouse clicking on the "arrow head" in the MIDI box in the lower left. (This way the patterns which are preloaded won't interfere with your playing,) Now close Session Drummer and return to the tracks in SONAR. You will notice all the new tracks SONAR created for SD3. At the bottom of the list of tracks you will find the MIDI track for your DM6. In that MIDI track (assuming that your DM6 is already connected to your PC and that you have chosen it in the MIDI devices under Preferences), choose your DM6's output from the tracks input drop down. NOW, activate the Input Echo button to on and it will turn blue. Finally, you will then be ready to record or just play your drums on your Alesis set on SONAR. It's pretty cool. Sorry for the long, unbroken text...I used Firefox to respond to your post. Kind regards, Living Room Rocker

Hey guys, Thanks for all the help and info, but the SONAR demo I have does not have session drummer in it :(. Sorry for wasting your guys time. However, I'll be sure to save up for SONAR Essentials or Studio...Speaking of which, any advice for which one would be the best to purchase?

Haha that is very true Kalle, I'm extremely new to all this midi and soft synth stuff. I'm used to just recording live instruments and would love to get to know and use MIDI instruments to add some depth and variety to my recordings

Well, without doubt, the BEST to purchase would be Producer Expanded, but the comparison chart should give you a good idea where to spend your cash: Comparison Chart

Bristol_Jonesey, Thank you for the chart, but when it says session drummer 3, does this mean there is no way I can get any form of session drummer without purchasing SONAR producer?

Trent, you don't have to have Session Drummer. You can use whatever drum synth you have available. It all works the same (except for the possible limitation of sending the individual drums to separate tracks).
