Can't find BFD in X2. *SOLVED*

The directions in the help file didn't seem to work but I'm probably doing it wrong. I'm not even sure what folder the program installed itself in. I know it is on the C drive and the audio content (including Rock Legends and the Gen 16 cymbal pack) are on my E drive. I've tried F5 in the browser hoping it would magically appear but no dice. X2 found GR5 after I set the Audio FX PlugIns menu to "Default All Plug-ins" so I tried that in the Instruments section but it was already set to Default. Sorry... new to this process. Cheers.

    32 or 64 bit Sonar?
    32 or 64 bit BFD?

The vsti on my system is in C:\Program Files\Fxpansion\BFD2 for 64 bit and in C:\Program Files (x86)\Fxpansion\BFD2 for 32 bit

You need to make sure one of these paths is specified in Utilities > Cakewalk Plug-in Manager > Options

I'm not in front of my DAW, however from memory, I believe Sonar only scans for plugs in the paths you've configured.  I believe it can be configured under preferences - VST settings (or something similar to that).

Make sure whatever path you think BFD may be installed to is included in the list of scanning paths you see.

You then either manually scan for plugins to see if Sonar now finds it, or you can select to have Sonar automatically scan for plugins everytime it starts.

    Hope that helps.

Hi, Jonesey. Sonar and BFD are both 64 bit (at least that's what I installed).

@karma... I can't see my FXpansion folder. I think it installed under the cakewalk VST file but I can't expand it in the scan window. Can I just set it to scan my whole system somehow? It is installed somewhere.

    No!

You'll end up with all sorts of rubbish in your vst list.

Better option - do a Windows search for FXpansion

You can, but as Bristol_Jonesey said, you'll wind up with all kinds of stuff, plus it will take a long time!
I'd do as recommended above, use Windows Expolorer to find your BFD2.exe and .dll's - then enter that directory into the vstscan search path in Sonar.

Thanks Jonesey. I found a bunch of FXpansion stuff in My Documents and added the main FXpansion folder to the scan thingy in VST settings but it's not doing anything. This is driving me nuts.

Okay... I know this is lame but could somebody just give me a step by step here on how scan properly? As I search the forum and internet in general I've references to TWO place to scan from. The one in Edit > Preferences > VST Settings and another in the Utilities menu. I don't think when I'm adding the FXpansion folder to the VST settings scan it's actually scanning it. I am missing a step somewhere. Sorry guys. This is terribly confusing for me.

You need to find out where BFD2.dll is living and make sure the parent folder is added to your scan path.

    This is crucial!

The preferences > file > VST settings is just a different way to configure the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager tool. I usually just use the tool directly in the Utilities menu. You can add the directory in the preferences or open the plug-in manager tool and click the options button in VST Configuration (that will popup the screen above).

Does BFD show up in X1? I thought you said it did back in your original BFD post.

It must do as I know for a fact Beep was running it on X1.

Beep - fire up X1 and have a look in there.

I should have thought of that earlier

Beepster - after you have completed the VST scan, how are you looking for BFD? Are you going straight into the project and bringing up your synths list?

This is where it wants to install to... C:\Program Files (x86)\VSTPlugins That's where it would have gone before as well. Why the heck I could find that in the scanner dialog I do not know. THis better work.

    No

Do a search for the file using Windows search. When it finds it, make a note of the folder and tell Sonar the folder so it can find it.

Well that KIND of worked. I probably didn't even need to uninstall but I needed to find the path. I did the scan but now I only see BFD 32 Bit. Blurgh...

That probably means the 64bit version defaults to C:\Program Files\VSTPlugins

Re:Can't find BFD in X2. Can someone give me a quick tut on scanning for plugs/VST? 2012/09/26 16:19:39 (permalink)
Whenever I've installed Eco (or BFD2) the installer sees sonars 32 vst folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins)
I run 32 and 64 bit versions of sonar. But I have to point the installer to cakewalks 64 bit vst folder (C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins)

I think otherwise the Eco installer will either create a "steinberg/vst folder" or just a folder called vst's.
If it's in either of those locations you can just move the BFD Eco.dll to C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins and rescan.

If you were running X1 64 bit and Eco 64 bit was running fine before, does that not mean that X2 has created it's own 64 bit vst folder?

I just scanned that folder, scook and no dice but I think it added couple other plugs. However I may have in my fury accidentally installed the 32 bit version or something. At least I now know how and where to scan properly. Might try again. Derp. Thanks for all the help guys. I think I've got it under control now. Cheers.

Most installers give you the opportunity to select where the VST dll will be installed. You may want to always specify the C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins. Additionally you might want to specify a subdirectory for the install for example C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\BFDEco

Beepster, for future reference. Click the start button and type in the search pane if you need to find something. Windows will find all references to whatever it is you are trying to find, then you can just add that path in the Sonar: Edit/Preferences/File/VST settings dialog, no need to reinstall anything. I have BFD ECO and BFD2 installed in folders for 32 and 64bit versions.

Holy bleeping jebus poop crackers! It turns out I had NOT solved the problem and spent the past hour trying to figure it out. It turns out BFD Eco just throws itself willy nilly all over the darned C drive... AND there is an issue where unless you have the latest update from august it sometimes won't show up in the host at all even if you do manage to find all the files.

So first I reinstalled BFD. Then I made sure I had the latest update (Version 1.5.1.5) from my FXpansion account. As I installed that update I wrote down every one of the install paths. Here they are... tell me if this makes ANY kind of sense...

    VST Plugin Path (32 Bit) = C:\Program Files(x86)\VSTPlugins

    App Path (32 Bit) = C:\Program Files(x86)\FXpansion\BFD Eco

    VST Path (64 Bit) = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Steinberg\VST2

    App Path (64 Bit) = C:\Program Files\FXpansion\BFD Eco

It's in completely different folders! So I added all those to the Sonar VST scan thingy, checked off the ReScan options and let it do its thing. I figure this HAS to work. Well I didn't see anything implying BFD 64 bit in my browser BUT there was a new option that simply said BFD Eco. I inserted that into the track view and clicked the little question mark options button in the BFD GUI, went to the About option and SUCCESS! It was telling me that it was the 64 bit version.

I'm pretty mad I wasted my afternoon screwing around with this but at least I know FAR more about how to use the VST scanner (of which I knew NOTHING before today) and I can use BFD 64 bit. What I DON'T get is why I could see it in X1 after a relatively easy install but it turned into this enormous screw around in X2. Obviously this isn't a Sonar issue but the help menu entry on the scanner was no help at all. You wouldn't be able to understand it unless you already knew how to use it. It IS however a really bad default installation which is on FXpansion. We're not all computer geniuses yanno?

Anyway... my anger and frustration is subsiding now and I'm glad it worked out in the end. You guys, as usual, totally saved my sorry arse and I thank you profusely. Cheers.

You only want the 64bit VST path in you plug-in manager directory listing.
