Can't get it to work - VB-Audio Cable and Sonar to record streaming/Youtube?

Anyone use this togehter?
I followed the video on the site for Reaper, but can't get it to work...
http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Cable/

I use a Motu Ultralite MK3 Hybrid audio interface on Windows 10 64 bit. Sonar Platinum.
I tried both VB Audio Cable and the HI-FI Version as well tried to use VoiceMeeter mixer..

Any ideas?

Thank!

I cannot comment on the Virtual Cable (yet) but if you downloaded and installed Voicemeeter...

    1) Set Voicemeeter as default audio device in your Windows Control Panel Sounds

    2) Go to Sonar "Edit > Preferences > Audio - Devices" and DESELECT your current interface ins/outs and select all the Voicemeeter ins/outs

    3) In Sonar, set up an audio track and from the input options list select "Stereo VM - VAIO 7/8" (or something like that)

3a) Click the "Composite" button on the Virtual Output bus in Voicemeeter (output bus "B") which will provide a prefader tap of the virtual input bus

    4) Arm the track and press playback on your youtube vid. It should be playing back in the Voicemeeter Virtual Input section (and the VM meters lighting up) AND you should be getting signal in the stereo track.

If all that is happening then all you have to do is start recording.

    Cheers.

"3) In Sonar, set up an audio track and from the input options list select "Stereo VM - VAIO 7/8" "

And that 7/8 is important because 7/8 are the "invisible" prefader taps to the virtual input.

And I forgot to mention you NEED to click the Composite button on the Voicemeeter Virtual Output bus (which is output bus B).

I will edit my OP to say that... otherwise you cannot get signal from those virtual channels.

You CAN however get input from VM VAIO 1/2 but that is the entire output from Voicemeeter which may not be desirable if you have an active mic or something going on.

Thanks Beepster. Will check this out...

Follow up question. Is really Voicemeeter necessary for only recording streaming audio from Youtube for example? In the video in the VB site he doesn't seem to do so in Reaper. Only when you are recording video with your own voice?

I THINK if you don't mind switching out of ASIO mode in Sonar and using something like WDM instead then you can get away with it.

Not sure because I haven't played with that BUT AFAIK if you wanted to do that straight recording into Sonar (which Sonar is in ASIO mode using your ASIO interface) then you need Voicemeeter (or something similar like those Virt cables).

Oh and make sure if you are gonna do that you have Sonar Prefs set to "share driver with other programs" selected (or whatever that function is called... it's a checkbox in the Audio sub preferences)

    Cheers.

Use pedalboard2 it's more flexible and if you wanna just record from youtube you don't need any external software, you can do right on PB2 with it's own plugins.

    Download PB2 from here : http://www.niallmoody.com/apps/pedalboard2

I use Audacity to rip streaming audio from Youtube, Media Player, et al.
    Simple and FREE.

Hey John, I have seen you post this before, and last time I saw it I tried it out without success. I typically use onboard audio for Windows functions, but trying to record this way created a "sample rate mismatch" error even though Audacity and the soundcard were set to identical rates. Is there a specific trick to this?

I, too, use Audacity for this purpose. I don't recall doing anything special to make it work, just bring up Audacity and hit Record. The trick might be in the preferences: I'm using WASAPI, which unlike ASIO supports multiple streams.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

VLC media player (free) will happily download youtube videos into many different formats - video and/or audio.

And does it a lot faster than if you played the video from start to finish.

Freemake Video Downloader will download video and convert to several different formats of which one is mp3. I use it or VLC, whichever is at hand.

Yeah... all those are probably easier options.

The easiest likely being just downloading the vid using one of those YouTube download apps. Then you can just import the vid into Sonar and the audio will get stripped out into a new audio track... where you can do whatever you want with it.

I however usually just hook the headphone output of my laptop (a separate computer from my DAW) to my mixer using a Y splitter, send the direct outs of those channels into my interface (which are always hooked up via a snake anyway) and record the track in real time. I can use the mixer to control levels and add some EQ if I want as well.

I don't do that often though but it works nicely.

Now that I own a half decent screen cap software I can actually just record the vid (or just the audio using a special feature) into the screencap recorder and then do whatever I want with the audio after.

So... definitely lots of ways to do this.

I just saw the Voicemeeter thing mentioned in your OP and since I've been messing with it lately figured I'd point out how you could do that.

    Cheers.

    Note on VLC :

For some reason, my VLC only works properly if I have "Tools/Messages/Verbosity" set to 1 or higher.

I have Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) which I think is a similar kind of thing. I use it to route all of my system audio through Pedalboard2 on which I have the ARC2 plugin installed, that way I can room correct all of my computer's audio output with ARC2. To be honest it took me a lot of trial and error to get it working. A lot of head scratching as I wondered which input/output options to select to get the audio where I wanted it. And VAC has a lot of very technical options too. In the end I stumbled blindly upon the right options and quickly saved them.

Sorry 4 late reply, been away...

I Also use Audacity, and that works, just seemed easy to record directly into Sonar. Well, haven't solved it with VB audio so will continue with Audacity for now..
