Cant get midi notes to snap to grid
I have snap to grid on. I have ti set to 1/4, then 1hole, 1./2, 1/8 cant get midi notes to snap to grid. Audio works. I should mention Im int he piano roll view. I went into customization settings and I have snap settings on snap to and the high level magnetic setting like I always use. Also, in piano roll view, I tried to tried to set the snap settings there and it doesnt help. Also, the "follow snap settings" option is grayed out. This sux! lol Any hints? Ive RTFM and tweaked enough lol. Im supposed to be a sonar expert!

I couldn't get me snap to in PRV working right today until I had the main tool bar snap to on and set to what I wanted...i.e. sixteenth notes. This new "universal" snap to is going to take some learning.

Apparently "off' acts like what you would expect "on" to act like. Go figure.

Well a couple of days I explained it before but anyways here goes: Snap feature -> notes snap to snap settings Magnetism feature -> notes are allowed to be drawn ANYWHERE but they are "magnetised" to snap settings so in essense: magnetic strength in any setting (high, low etc) - ALLOWS notes to be drawn anywhere with a magnetism to snap settings relevant to magnetic strength magnetism off: NO other option for notes, they just snap to snap settings Nothing broken there, just a wee bit confusing between "snap" and "magnetism" ;)

Oh and about the "follow snap settings" This bug has been inherited from earlier versions and I discovered its solution a bout 6 months ago To enable it: make sure PRV view is not maximised (and undock it for X1) click on upper-left icon of PRV window and select "disable floating" now the option is not greyed out - check it feel free to re-arrange now your windows as you see fit ;)

When you are free associating an improvisional peice into a project, how can you calculate what the accurate magnetic strength should be, or if you should snap it to grid before listening to the variations present?

Well actually the magnetism works here as I described and Im still on Sonar 8.5! Im pretty sure most of you fellas had the magnetism "off" and had never checked, and X1 came with default "on" doing your head in! ;)

Sorry Crg - didnt quite get you "grid follows snap settings" is the feature that allows the GRID in piano roll view to show rulers according to your snap settings It doesnt change any snap settings - only the visual rulers Magnetic strength feature in snap settings is another thing. Sorry for the confusion but the OP had two unrelated questions and I answered both! Hope I made sense this time! ;)

I always hated "magnetism" and kept it off. Snap or get off the pot!

When recording or editing.

Yes but you previously quoted me when I was explaining the "grid follows snap settings" Now about the features you refer to, which part do you object or do not understand from my post? edit: and actually you are wrong, neither of the features influence input when recording....this is done by "input quantize" at least up untill Sonar 8.5

Is there any way to get to the Magnetism setting besides through "P" for the Preferences window? I thought I got to it from the PRV but I can't figure out how I did it. I'm guessing I imagined it.

Oh see in 8.5 I always had it on high, but I do see now that having it off makes the snap strength its strongest, especially in X1.

The other night I was doing a lot of hand drawing and editing in a MIDI track and everything (attack times and note durations) would snap to the 1/4 or the 1/16 or the measure or whatever and now I can't get it to do that. I was able to turn the snap grid on and off, but now I can't get it to come on at all except in drawing mode and there I can't get it turn off! I should be able to turn snap on and off in smart, move, edit, draw and even erase modes. What am I doing wrong, and how do I fix it? Thanks, John Also I can never seem to remember how to find the "start a new post" button. Where do I access that? :- )

I should have added I'm using SONAR X1 Studio. (Build 185, if that's relevant)

Pretty sure that is an old version. You might want to look to patch to X1d, the last version. It will require patching to X1c then X1d.
