Can't get there from Here

Here's a cover of R.E.M.'s "Can't Get there from here". Any critique is more than welcome. https://soundcloud.com/bluzdog/cant-get-there-from-here. Thanks

Nice work, great song choice. Would've liked the lead vocal a touch sharper and more up front. Also a bit more treatment on the BV.

Thanks for checking it out rebel. I agree on the BV's especially on the chorus. I found the upper mids on the lead vocal a bit grating and spent some time pushing him back in the mix by request. I'll do a little more tweaking.

that's what I am talking about! The voice of your singer and the sound of the band works extremely well with this song. I agree with Rebel, very good song choice. Have you considered forming a tribute band?

Thanks Tom. I have an old friend in Hof, Rory O Connor. He owns Rory's Steak House. I've never been there but it looks like a rockin' place.

It is Hof / Bavaria, I guess? That is quite far from where I live. But if I should come around some day, I will check it out and let you know if it rocks or not!

    Nice cover.

To me it seems like the rhythm guitar and bass (at times) are fighting for space. Put a little snap (+2db @ 1.5-2KHz) on the bass and it might be golden.

BGVs seem a bit muffled to me.

It's not easy to do REM, but you did them justice with this cover.  It sounds about right to me.  REM, inho, wasn't the best produced band of all time.  Their mixes were often muddy, and few could understand the lyrics.  But, that mostly was by design, and that sound became their trademark.  You may have done them one better.

    All the best,
    Lynn

I like the mix on this one. It sounds real. The guitar reminds me of Robbie Blunt (former Robert Plant guitarist) a little. Is this a Tele? Sounds like a Princeton or Twim amp.

Thanks Clint. It's a '91 Strat Plus with Gold Lace Sensors through a '70's Champ with a Weber Speaker in it.

Cool! I thought it sounded like a Strat, but with your Tele pic...I wasn't sure. Sounds like a nice little amp!

I love that little amp. It was given to me in the '80's and his has some history to it. It started it's life in Gainsville, Fl. I hated that Strat after I bought it, I was a Les Paul guy at the time. I kept it and after a few years the Les Paul rarely saw the light of day. I can't be without that Strat now. I still have the Les Paul, it's a '79 Custom with lots of sentimental value. Coming to think of it I need to show it some love.

Love the very “dry” production sound on this…don’t know how else to describe it but listening to this gave me the same feeling when I first heard the original REM recordings…which were quite different from a lot of what was about at that time….

I think it was Lynne who says:

“Their mixes were often muddy, and few could understand the lyrics.  But, that mostly was by design, and that sound became their trademark”

For me that was the early REM signature and really what gave them their unique early sound ( well that and Peter Buck’s Rickenbacker)  When you think about it is fascinating to think where they went from “Murmur” and “Rumour” to stuff like ‘Shiny Happy People”…while a totally different and upbeat sound somehow still retains an element of the “dry” sound….

Also great to hear the sound of a real live band at work and loving what they do…

    Cheers man…
