Can't hear drum notes but can see them when played

Hello everyone and thanks for reading. I will try to be brief with my problem so you can get back to work.

I am trying to start using the Drum Maps in Sonar X3 for the first time. I have used X3 successfully for a couple of years now and I know everything "works" fine. I had previously been using Reason 7 as my drums but am trying to go over to Sonar's drum now.

I am not talking about Sonar's Session Drummer but their MIDI version which I do not know what it is called exactly. I think that I am not communicating properly with something although I am able to see the notes being played as I depress the mouse or keyboard. I just can't hear them. Hard to make a drum pattern that way!

Rather than go into Preferences or whatever I need to to work on this problem, I thought I would stop by here first and see if any wise one's could advice me first before I screw up everything.

Here is what I am doing in case this is wrong:

1) Create new project
2) Create new MIDI track3) Assign a drum map to the track.4) From here, I can see the individual drums and play them too but I can't hear them. By see, I mean as they are listed along the left hand side of the screen; going down from the top to the bottom. When I select and play a given drum with my mouse, I can see a green light flash indicating that the note was played but again, I can not hear anything.

I am not certain how to do anything with the MIDI stuff but I am thinking that maybe I need to do something with the MIDI out or in but am afraid to mess with my working settings.

If anyone knows how I can do this I certainly would appreciate knowing otherwise I will be stuck with using Reason's sad samples for my drum tracks.

Thanks so much for your time and help!

Hi. If I understand correctly, you are using only MIDI? MIDI needs to trigger a sound or sample in order to be heard. Try to insert an Audio Track, insert Session Drummer 3, then route the MIDI track out to SD3. Hope it helps.
    All the best.

the 2 drum sims in X3 are Sessions drummer and SI Drums.
trust me when I say you will be better off using session drummer.
but if you like, sure you can use SI Drums.

but instead there's an easier way:
1- use the insert options: insert synth / vst2 / SI Drums.
2- when the properties page opens choose "simple audio track" (unless your using sd3 that's all you can choose)
3- that track created is for midi that will trigger SI Drum sounds.
from there you can choose any drum map you like.

as Ken said above, you can always route the track to sd3.
you can also watch this about easily inserting SI Drums:

Hello guys and thank you so much for your quick responses!

Thanks for both of your thoughts on this. I will be trying them out now that I have something to go on. I had forgotten nearly everything I used to know about midi so I was way lost until now.

I have barely begun to look into Sonar's drum stuff and didn't know much of anything at all. I will take your advice exactly and hope that it does something good, which I am sure it will!

I was going to say thanks for pointing me to that great video but then I realized that the person who did the video is probably you, chuckebaby, so to you I say, well done sir! A great service to Sonar users. By the way, how many times better would you say your videos are than the official Sonar videos? Those that I have seen are nothing compared to yours.

Thanks alot Zargg71 and chuckebaby, I do hope this puts me on the right track.

Also, I went and listened to a couple of your songs chuckebaby or Roy (I think), and they were great man. I was wondering, are those drums that I hear from Sonar or other? Also, did you have these songs mastered professionally or did you master them yourself at home on a pc using software and plug-ins? It sounds great to me. If its a secret then I understand but I really would like to know. Also, How come you don't have more followers?

    Thanks guys!
