Can't hear what I'm recording while recording it
I'm using Sonar Home Studio 6 XL with a Tascam US-122L (audio/MIDI interface) and a Shure Beta 87A condenser mic. The recordings are great, but I can't hear what I'm recording as I'm recording it. I've tried sending the output to both my headphones and also to my monitors, but I'm still getting nothing. Rather than hearing the sound from either of those while I'm recording, I'm just getting it during play back. I'm flying blind here...especially when I try to record my keyboard since I can't hear anything I'm playing. I must be missing something, but I need a little help figuring out what. I'm just looking for a dry recording, that's all I need. Any advice?

You could turn Input Echo on, but you may get a delay depending on your soundcard. A better option is to monitor through the interface instead of through the computer.

Yeah, I'm getting a slight delay with the Input Echo. I'll try to monitor through the interface and see if that works. Thanks!

If your getting an echo, then lower your latency so its under 5ms, then you wont hear any echo's. Or monitor threw your interface, that is the best way, expecially if your project is too big to playback under 5ms. Cj

Yes, as CJay said, lower the latency or monitor THROUGH your interface. That is the best way, ESPECIALLY if your porject is too big to playback under 5ms. Keph.

Monitor playback and fresh recordings through the phones socket on the US-122L - no latency then. That's one of the big advantages of an external interface (or external mixer, of course)

I've tried to monitor through the interface by plugging into the phone jack and I'm still getting nothing. Do I need to change a specific setting on Cakewalk? It won't be of any use to record with one headphone off and one on because there is no fresh recording sound anyway. It's not that big of a deal with my voice and guitar because I can hear them without monitors, of course, but I'm playing the keys on my keyboard and hearing no sound and yet everything that I play is being recorded.

You have the microphone plugged into the US122-L Mic Input and the headphones plugged into the phones jack of the US122-L and you're not hearing anything? Don't plug the microphone into the Line Input because microphones need a preamp. Do you have it plugged into your computer's USB port? It needs that for power. Have you turned up the volume controls on the US122-L?

Yep, I've got the mic plugged in my US 122-L Input (not the Line Input) with the Phantom power switched on, the headphones plugged into the phone jack, the US 122-L plugged into my computer's USB port and I've messed with the volume controls on my US 122-L. When I'm recording my voice I've got the Mic Line switched on and then switch it over to guitar line when I record the keyboard (I'm just using my mic to record the guitar for now...getting my acoustic electric fixed) The playback sounds great, but I'm still missing the fresh recording sound. My headphones can't be bad, because I've used them for playback, so I'm still not sure what to do??

Are you using a condenser microphone? You only need phantom power if you're using a condenser. Otherwise, turn that off. "WARNING Microphones should not be connected to or disconnected from the US-122L with phantom power switched on. Unbalanced dynamic microphones should never be connected to phantom powered connectors." Do you have the Mon-MIX balance knob all the way to the left? Did you turn the input knobs up until the SIG/OL LED lights up? If that doesn't work, something may be wrong with the US122-L. Contact TASCAM.

Yeah, I'm using a condenser (Shure Beta 87A). That's the only reason I have Phantom on. I've tried with the Mono-mix turned both to the left and to the right, with the switch on and off. While recording, the SIG/OL LED lights up red, yellow, and green. I'm not sure which one I should be aiming for. If I remember right, the sounds gets distorted when the light turns green.

I record with the 122L and a condenser mike and have no probs monitoring with headphones. Presumably you've got the phones/line out control set high?

Read the US122 manual if you don't know what you're doing. Actually, Green means the level is good. Red and Yellow means the level is too high. You may have a defective unit. It should be pretty simple: connect the USB for power, mic or guitar plugged in to mic or line input, headphones plugged into phones jack. If you can't hear the mic or guitar in the phones, then the US122 is not working properly. This problem has NOTHING to do with Sonar. The problem is either the US122 or you have a bad cable somewhere.

I would tell you what the problem was except that I don't know. I ended up unplugging everything and starting all over using the same cables and the same trial and error system as before...manual in hand just like before. The sound is not very loud in the headphones, but it's enough for me to monitor my keyboard. I don't like that when monitoring through the interface, I can't hear the tracks already recorded though. So, when recording my voice I will monitor through the computer again just so that I can hear the accompany track. This is the set up for recording my voice while monitoring through the interface (to monitor the keyboard, I switch input lines and turn the phantom power off): The microphone is plugged into the US122-L Mic Input and the headphones are plugged into the phones jack of the US122-L, which is plugged into my computer's USB port. The volume is turned up on the US122-L. I turned the Mon-MIX balance knob all the way to the left and turned the input knobs up until the SIG/OL LED lights up green. The phantom power is on since I'm using a condenser mic.

I have used Sonar for years to edit MIDI and save them as MP3's. Just started recording audio and can't figure how to hear my vocals during recording. I don't fully understand input echo. Some make it sound like an in/out for effects, others as input monitoring. I don't want to port in effects - I just want an audible feed in the cans.
I get a perfect recording level with input echo - but it is delayed, and sometimes distorts. Official Cakewalk documentation says this - To eliminate the echo from input monitoring
1.Open the Windows Volume Control window: list-image Windows 7: Click the Windows Start button and go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Volume Control. The Volume Control window appears. 2.In the Play Control window of the mixer, check the Mute check box in the Line-In column, or in the column of whatever jack your instrument is plugged into, and close the mixer window. Now you can hear only the processed sound when you use input monitoring. Using WDM or ASIO drivers for your sound card keeps latency to a negligible amount. In Win 7 professional - "There is no Hardware and Sound option, just a Sound option."

Well bumping an 11 year old thread wont help. You seem to have a habit of doing that. Info from 2007 is almost next to..Useless. Start a new thread and list your soundcard set up. If your hearing a delay its 99% latency. List your PC, operating system specs as well as which Sonar version your using. It could be multiple things but more than likely your soundcard cant keep up with live input recording.

Well, I found the perfect solution and cheap too ($24.99). A Behringer "Micro Mon MA400". It has a XLR in and through and a 1/4" monitor in. You can blend the track and the mic perfectly, in mono or stereo. No need for "input echo" or tweaking latency, or buying a new sound card. Chuckebaby - I don't "hang out" in the forum like you. This page came up in a Google search.
