Can't kill sonar process after crash

How do I kill the sonar process (sonarpdr.exe) after a crash? It won't let me do so through the task manager (Win7, 64-bit).  I have to reboot every time, and that is a REAL workflow KILLER!
Thanks,
Will

    Whats the crash error code?
Do you have any MIDI devices hooked up?
Is everything  64bit ready? Hardware and software?

List all your pc specs and all hardware, like sound card and midi controllers

you need to disconnect your external soundcard and MIDI devices. then the sonarpdr.exe should finish automatically.

Bummer. My soundcard is the M-Audio Delta 1010LT--that is, it is a PCI card, and disconnecting is not so straightforward. But, yes, I am using the 64-bit version of Sonar 8.5. The CPU is an intel i7-920.

in this case, at least try to disconnect your MIDI. I have to turn my Edirol M16-dx and USB Maudio MIDI off every time Sonar crashes.

But I hope you can solve the cause of the crash.

The Delta1010LT is the MIDI interface also. As for the cause, it is random and may or may not produce an error message. I got two of them in a three-hour session today and could not discern anything in common with them.
    Thanks for helping.

Yeah things plugged into the PC via USB are a culprit for Sonar hanging. Could be a keyboard or controller etc.

I guess, what I was getting at was, is there some feature, in the OS perhaps, that would allow me to uber-KILL a process that doesn't want to end? I run it as admin already. Can't think of anything else. I figured "end process" means "end process", but with Sonar, it means something else.

No, it means the same thing but there is another process dependant on it still.

For me I just have to turn of my keyboard/controller via its on/off switch and the Sonar process which is trying to shut down anyway dies on its own.  It's just the still active midi link that is keeping it alive.

This has been discussed a few times so there are posts about it but trying to find them may be a problem.

But as suggested, it's normally just an item plugged in. Switch it off or unplug before closing Sonar and that's the 'kill' switch you want. What exactly do you have plugged in when Sonar is on?

Nothing was plugged in except the usual PC stuff: keyboard (qwerty), mouse, printer, monitors.

It'll only be one item. How hard can it be to eliminate which one?

Please list shoes, glasses and favorite beverages. Also, next time try logging out and back in instead of rebooting. Sonar used to crash my Layla, and that would fix it pretty quickly. Now that I think about it, I may have been able to turn off my interface to get Sonar to shutdown.

I don't get many crashes like that anymore (since I don't use Dim Pro, Rapture, and the 2 LP64 plugs. But I never could get out of it without rebooting. The only ext drvice is a midisport 2X2 but unplugging that never helped.
I just learned to live with it. But now I don't have to much at all. Using Ozone and Kontakt 4 mostly.

A lot of times, all you need to do is restart Sonar, and then close it normally.

Isn't the problem with the exe crash that it's already open so you can't restart it.

It’s a bad thing that Sonar is crashing on you as often as your matter of fact explanation seemed to indicate.
The best option is to reboot.  You have an i7 so rebooting shouldn’t take that long.
I suggest you ought to drill deeper to find out what is causing this. One option is to go into the Computer Management console of Win7 and look into the Event Viewer Log. You should see Application Fail log with
sonarpdr.exe as the error. On that page which comes up it may show more indication as to what caused Sonar to fail.
In my case for example it showed a freebie vst plug I was using as the faulting module.
Quick way to get into computer manage is:
    Right click on (My)Computer.
Left click on Manage. You will see on the left pane the Event Viewer page.
Launch Application logs. On the right you can find the Red Error with sonarpdr.exe.
I am on Vista but I think this procedure is the same or similar to Win7.

Another approach is to use Process Explorer from sysinternals instead of the Task Manager to kill sonarpdr.exe. Process Explorer has, in addition to "Kill Process", a "Kill Process Tree" function that kills all child processes first before killing the main executable. This will sometimes allow you to end a "stuck" process that Task Manager can't halt.

The exception is when you have a hardware or driver problem that causes SONAR to sit on a queue waiting for something to happen with the hardware that isn't going to happen for whatever reason. Process Explorer can't help you with that. For that, you have to disable the device or reboot.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

You run what as an admin? Sonar or software from your interface? Only Sonar should be run as an admin.

Couldn't find another more recent thread, but thought I'd add a hint in case others have this problem too.

I have this problem from time to time and my setup has a USB midi keyboard controller and internal sound-card. Turning off or unplugging the keyboard does not help.

What does help is going to the Windows device manager and finding the sound card then choosing "disable." The sonar.exe process will disappear from the Task Manager, and then choose "enable" back in the device manager for the sound card that was just disabled. Restart sonar and all is well again.... no need to restart computer.
