Can't play SMF
I'm having trouble getting MC5 to play a SMF I downloaded from the internet. The file saved as a .mid file. I have MC5 open. I go to "Open" and find the file where I saved it. I click on it and it opens in a MC5 project with 5 tracks. When I press play the transport rolls. As it navigates through the song, I see the meters for each track jumping in the tracks pane but I have no sound. (To shed some light, I opened a different project where I recorded some midi drums and they work just fine, so I know my setup is correct). I have my inputs set to Midi OMNI and my outputs are set to my interface. Not sure what I'm missing. Any help would be much appreciated. Kat

I have my inputs set to Midi OMNI and my outputs are set to my interface. What is the interface's MIDI out connected to? MC 5 has moving meters for the MIDI tracks? All the other Cakewalk DAWs I've owned have no meters, so you can't see how loud the MIDI is. Or are you talking about the soft synth audio tracks?

Sounds like you may have forgotten to add a SoftSynth to the works. If it's a Standard Midi File, then it should reference Standard Midi Instruments from the GM selection. If it's not standard, then perhaps the instruments are mapped to ones that your Soft Synth doesn't recognize, but I believe it defaults to piano in that case which you would hear.

Yeah.... meters are only on audio tracks. So be sure to check the routing of the track out put to the master bus and then to the interface/soundcard. Are the master bus meters showing signal?

Sonar8 and its derivatives (including MC5) do have meters in the MIDI tracks. Prior versions didn't. "I have my inputs set to Midi OMNI and my outputs are set to my interface." Here's your problem. Tap is on the money. Inputs are not relevant in this scenario, so don't worry about that. The outputs need to go to a GM softsynth. TTS-1 is a GM softsynth, so we'll use it. Make sure All options are deselected in Options/MIDI Devices. Delete any synths present in the project (the outputs will not be automatically assigned if multiple synths are present). Insert TTS-1 with First Synth Audio Output and Synth Properties Page Only selected . Since TTS-1 is the only option available, the MIDI track outputs should automatically assign to TTS-1, with the proper channels and patches.

It's kind of strange, Greg, having meters with no actual sound associated with them. But they do confirm active output from the MIDI track. I wonder what happed with kat?

I checked my copy of MC5, and yeah ALL the tracks have meters. I even inserted JUST a midi track and it had a meter in it.... set it up to record input....didn't assign an output and it recorded just fine and even on playback it was showing activity on the meter.... learn something new round here every day....

Hey guys, Sorry I didn't mean to abandon the topic. We've simply had alot going on around here. My wife's mother passed away and it's been rather hectic. To be honest I haven't fooled that much with the SMF since because it wasn't of earth-shattering importance that I figured it out other than I hate being stuck. I was trying to do so just in case I wanted/needed to do it in the future. When everything settles down I may re-visit this again. Thanks to everyone for their replies.
