Can't switch over to 24 bit Sonar HS 6

Hey all. I'm using Sonar HS 6 and recording into a Lexicon Lambda primarily. I've read similar topics with this issue but nothing seems to be helping me. The Lambda acts as my MIDI in/out, and is supposed to be compatible with 24 bit recording, but when I go to Options > Audio > General Tab and set the Audio Driver Bit Depth to 24 and close out, it takes a second then pops up a window telling me "The default audio format is not compatible with one or more sound cards. It has been reset to 44100 Hz (16 bit), as suggested by the driver. Going on people's suggestions, I've switched to ASIO (I use WDM) and it grays out my bit depth as 16 bit. Another common solution I've seen is to uncheck any other drivers, yet in the driver's tab though I have a bunch of options (mostly Realtek HD Audio and one ATI HD) none of them are checked except for my USB Audio Device (Lambda).

Anyone know what I can do to get my audio recording in 24 bit? I will say I have noticed when I open a new project at the bottom right of the window next to my disc space it says 44.1kHz, 24-bit - confuzzling.

ok - first you shouldn't see the realtek at all if you're in ASIO mode, only in WDM mode.  so change to ASIO.

next, you say the drivers checked are "USB Audio Device (Lambda)"  does it actually SAY "Lambda" or does it just say "usb audio device"?  because if it's "usb audio device" without specifying "lambda" then you're not using the real lexicon drivers but you're using windows' usb audio codec and that would be why you can't record with 24bit.

make sure you've downloaded and installed the correct lexicon drivers from the lexicon website for your operating system.
http://www.lexiconpro.com/product.php?id=8#downloads
download and install that top driver program.

then change to ASIO driver mode after you've installed the drivers and restarted your computer.

Thanks for the quick reply, Beagle.

It was just showing up as USB Audio Device, so I updated my driver and it seems to recognize it as a Lambda now. I switched over to ASIO and set my bit depth to 24 and it gave me the same message saying it's been set back to the default of 16, however after a restart now my audio shows the option to switch bit depth as grayed out (which seems to be standard with ASIO) but it's grayed out at 24 bit depth. Does this mean it's worked? Is there any way to tell if it's recording in 24 bit based on the wav files recorded? Thanks for all your help.

EDIT: I checked the wav files recorded in a test (no export, the recorded sound file itself) and in the properties panel's Details tab it listed the kbps as 2116, which I believe means the file was recorded as 24 bit - Am I right about this? Other files that I know were exported as 16 are at 1411kbps.

In Options>Global>Audio folder, make sure the Recording Bit Depth is set to 24.

I had the same problem a few years ago with setting up for 24-bit.

no, the kbps has to do with the sampling rate, not the bit depth.  what sampling rate is your project set to and what sampling rate do you have the lexicon set to?  they have to match.

Beagle - I checked the driver in the control panel and it looks like it's set to 24 bits with a sample rate of 44100 Hz. I've decided to attach some images of the key windows to show what my setup is. Despite the warnings it gave me when I tried to switch over, it looks like in my current ASIO setup I'm recording in 24... But hopefully these images with help determine.

EDIT: Some of these were resized by the forum, so right-click and view image to see it in all its expanded glory.

ok but are you still getting the warnings? or do you get it only when starting up or what?  it looks like it is ready for you to record.

also, make sure you check the area that greg said to check

I'm wondering at this point if the Lambda just doesn't want to work with WDM in 24. Because if I switch to WDM it A.) Only recognizes the Lambda as "USB Audio Device" and B.) only wants me to record in 16. When I switch from WDM to ASIO, the only message I get is something about needing to disable the audio device (and of course restart the program) and once I do, ASIO is set up with a grayed-out 24 bit and looks just like that Audio General tab I showed in the picture. Also the picture I posted of my global settings should match what Greg was talking about.

It's frustrating that there doesn't appear to be a clearcut way to see if the files I've recorded are 24 bit or not but it seems like it's working...

Right. It looks like you're all set. Global is at 24-bit; Lambda is at 24-bit; What does it read at the bottom of the SHS screen? If that's 24-bit as well, then it's recording at 24-bit.
Eighty-six WDM and use ASIO only, too.

Yes, that's entirely possible.  I do know that some soundcard drivers don't work fully in WDM driver mode because that way the manufacturer can save development money by not providing full functionality in all driver modes, but development for 1 driver mode for full functionality allows them to advertise that functionality.  so it wouldn't surprise me at all if it doesn't work in 24bit in WDM driver mode.  I've seen this in the forums before, but am not certain which soundcards that happens with.  lexicon might be one that does that.

it should be working in 24bit under those settings you have listed above.  looking at the bottom right hand corner of the screen in SHS6 shows your bit rate and sample rate for the project you're working on.  if you want further proof, you can drag and drop an audio track from SHS into a wave editor like Audacity or Goldewave and check the bit depth there.  but again, if it says it in the bottom right hand corner then it's correct.
