Can't win
...I finished a project late last night. A gift for my father-in-law. It is a fretboard box. I have found a lot of enjoyment in working with wood and mostly building guitars but it has a big price. My hands have gone through hell. In the last couple of years I've been to the emergency room twice. One major rebuild of a thumb and one very bad finger slice. Last night I was doctoring a finger from an oak splinter that sliced a half inch gap. I'm not new to working or working with wood. I've built houses and furniture...but now I'm wondering if my age or luck or something is having a negative effect. Well whatever it is I feel like it's much like falling off a horse. I just hope the falling part stops. I hope it stops soon too! I walked by the tube the other night and they were burning something.. sage I think, to get rid of their ghosts....I thought.....naw. Ain't buying it. lol. Man I've had to edit just about every post I've made...letters missing...my hands need a break... rest. Need a rest. See...it's even got me jumpy.

Take care of that cut Spacey. Doesn't Oak have some sort of irritant that exasperates splinter cuts like this? It seems like oak splinters end up hurting worse than some. Good luck with it. best regards, mike

I don't know Mike. I did flush it with HP. This is the second time that an Oak splinter has got me. Man they are like little spears. This one got under the skin and on one side of my finger and came out the other side and ripped the skin open. Man that even sounds bad! LOL I can hear by buds....whimp, etc...I'll keep that part on the low lol. They are Karyn. That's why they make gun safes. If people make guns dangerous then maybe they should start making people safes. I have guns. Now my trigger finger doesn't like them. It doesn't like me either. I'm afraid to even point with it.

:-) I can do more damage with a battery operated Dewalt than most guys can do with a 10 clip of Hornady Zombie Max. :-) Just saying.

I say stop building guitars. The value of my Spacey Bass serial number 001 will only increase in value. Either that or take care of the wounds and be more careful in the future.

Fixed:) It may very well be the last bass I ever build. Really I think I was getting at how things seem to go in circles...like for a long time your hands may not have a mark on them and no soreness and then for awhile they'll be a mess with hurts and stiffness. Maybe I can move into that nice hands time again....and soon hopefully.

Maybe..... you need to slow down when you work. I find that when I'm in a hurry...well that's when I end up hurting myself in some manner...or making a mistake that forces me to go back and do something over. But.... working with things that are designed to cut wood..... they will slice your fingers just as quick. That's par for the course. You could wear kevlar gloves....

I love hearing about those new circular saws that can stop in the smallest fraction of a second when they come in contact with human skin. What I want to know is how the heck can it tell that it's my skin and not that of some dead body I want to cut up for disposal?

A bunch of wood species have toxic effects on people. Cedar will get you when sanding, Oak and Ash splinters always get infected and Ebony dust is toxic. I have some Padauk that is beautiful, but nobody wants to machine it because it gives off a very fine, bright orange dust that's like baby powder. It's the price we pay to chase a dream.

How right you are John and many of these woods I've never worked with. The only reason I'm working with Oak is for the shop projects like shelves, jigs..etc. and even knowing how the edges will splinter...they'll still sneak up and get me. Well it's a fairly new-found love and it's much like playing an instrument - once it gets you it's just hard to let it go. Worth it? Well I've played guitar since I can remember and never had the feeling that I had and have when I play the one I made for myself....so yeah, without doubt I can say it's worth it.
