Cape 7 Online Collaboration

These past few months I've been participating in an online collaboration over on The Womb. It's called CAPE, but I forget why. It was fun. It was my first online collaboration experience.

You can hear the CAPE songs here.

None of the CAPE tunes are likely to be blockbuster hits, but they're not awful, either. For this particular challenge, we were given a choice of three songs to work with, and only a rough demo as a guide. Teams - virtual bands - were assigned, based on instrumentation and making sure at least some of the team members had experience with previous CAPE exercises.

There were SONAR users among the team members, but there were also Logic, DP, PT and Cubase folks. However, using standard broadcast wave files meant that each contributor's choice of software was largely irrelevant.

I'd recommend this to anyone looking to enhance their recording and playing chops. It's fun.

i listened 6 times to "Rock life"
    Through Bose headphones
this is what my ears heard

    Intro>doesn't work 4 me
lyrics/lead vox, in some spots can't hear or understand
Vocalist--?---maybe try more lead vocalist? find some one --Better
    back ups>volume to low
    drums to loud/to out front/or forward---in places
    Kick drum ,muffled--not enough clarity
    Rhythm /Fill guitar--Good tone
Lead Guitar--sounds like --Isley brothers from the 70's---not good
    Bass --decent
Ending--doesn't work work 4 me--tune ends with no resolve or purpose--just ends........
    Good tone/eq on most instruments
Good Panning on the mix But.....?

This is what i heard--straight up
    and put into word's
    take it or leave it

    Remix?

My team was called Big Band Theory, and the song was "Doesn't Matter".

The real stars were the horn players; my own contribution was small. But it was a fun experience and I think there are a lot of folks here who would enjoy the process, which is why I brought it up.

I liked it a lot. You guys did some real work. Yours was a good recording. I REALLY enjoyed listening to various versions of the same song. Pretty cool; whoever invented the hook deserves some props.

Yes, I'm back ...with minions. Luv, D

Fun stuff there -- echoes of Blood, Sweat & Tears in those horns! So how did all this come together? Was one person in charge of arranging and coordinating all the parts? Did you submit various versions of your parts or just the one track? The people I used to collaborate with are all thousands of miles away now, so I'm intrigued by how you make this all work.

Hey bit...fun stuff!...as you know I started out wanting to get in on this program but it just didn't work out for me...I still love the idea but this time they had the roll of "producer" and that was a wash IMHO...without actually playing any instrument in the tune I could barely get anyone to answer an email...I think the general response was "hey who is this guy anyway"..lol which is fully understandable...so I just after 4 or 5 non-responsive emails and went back to working on Distant Towers tunes. I might try again but nix the producer positions...I'm really wondering how the other groups did with that concept? I know it was the first time in the 7 project that they isolated that position....but again I love the concept and might jump in again at some point....

    cool stuff!!
