Cardiod or omnidirectional mic for this application?

Good people,

Here's a link to a video of Ray Charles singing live and playing piano at the same time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU-MBTW86U8

Since he really swings and move his body as he sings, would his situation call for an omnidirectional microphone?

Ditto for keyboard players who sing along as they play, even though not swinging so much?

Thanks!

I think in the case of Mr Ray Charles.... that's called working the mic.

A cardioid works great... because the piano mics are close by stage left and the big band might sound phasey and funky if you just stick and omni up there.

I love the sound of an omni patterned mic... to my ear they always seem to sound like my ear.

But I think of Mr Charles using a cardioid '58 style mic most of the time.

One must also consider that Mr Charles was a great singer whom could sing to a room... distance from the mic is hardly a consideration for a cat like that. If it sounds quiet... he wanted it to sound quiet.

BTW Mr Charles was born and raised about 45 miles east of my home.

He is considered the man around these parts.

I only got to see him once but it was in a fantastic sounding auditorium used by the local symphonies. A great memory.

    best regards,
    mike
