Care of Mix Magazine Article - "That'll Be The Day" original version by Decca

Buddy Holly released under Decca the song, "That'll Be The Day" and it didn't take off. 

Later, he re-recorded it considerably lower (in pitch) and Brunswick Records pushed the crap out of it and suddenly Buddy's 'Beiber'd' into fame really quick. 

Check out (thanks to Youtube) the original version of "That'll Be The Day". 

This original first recording is 3 TONES HIGHER!!  Holy cow, huh?

    That's inspirational to think just lower the key 3 steps and then it works. Wow:)

    Amazing, this version sounds like a demo compared to the final.

    I've noticed the key and speed can have a drastic effect on the final outcome. I was having a problem on a track over the last 3 months. Nothing seemed to work to make it gel. Then I was listening to a Taylor Swift song which was also in 3/4 time and decided to try the same tempo on my song. It went from being a train wreck to being a believable ballad. I had tried all kinds of faster speeds but the secret sauce was to slow it down.

    It's amazing what a tempo, key, or meter change will do to a song.  

    What I have found also works wonders is to change the style. Take it from rock to country, or soul, and the whole song changes in magical ways....

    When I was recording on 4 track I used to raise or lower the tape speed to get just the right feel on the final mix.  Amazing what a difference it can make.

    I wish there was a master rotary knob in Sonar to slow up and speed down an audio/midi mix. Even if it was lo fi, that would be useful.
