CbB crashes (SPlat doesn't) when I load a Project with Antares Harmony Engine

As recommended by Antares I have both HE 4.1 and HE 4.009 installed (the former for future projects, the latter for legacy ones).

I have tried loading a few older projects which used HE 4.009 in SPlat and these load fine, whereas CbB (latest version) crashes after loading and the error indicates a problem in the HE 4.1 plugin even though the project used 4.009. CbB therefore seems to have substituted the wrong version of the plugin for the correct one causing a crash. SPlat loads the correct version and works fine.

For a single project I would be willing to re-save the project in SPlat after switching it to use the new engine (HE 4.1) but I have a lot of old projects which use the old engine and I wouldn't want to have to do this for all of them.

Is this a bug? Is there any other way around this? Are any other HE users having the same problem?

As a workaround I have renamed the HE 4.1 dll to make it inaccessible to CbB which at least allows me to load the projects in CbB
albeit with errors but a permanent fix would obviously be better.

Thanks

P.S. I'm on the latest version of Windows 10 x64 if that makes a difference and CbB and SPlat have identical VST scan paths.

Its very unlikely to be related to CbB itself. What is more likely is that your VST scan paths are slightly different for CbB and that the scanner has picked up an old version of the plugin on your system that was previously excluded.
The simplest solution would be to remove the offending plugin from your scan path.

Another approach is to re-migrate your SONAR Platinum settings CbB. The latest CbB update also handles migrating the VST inventory. This will require some registry editing so you shouldn't do it unless you are comfortable with modifying your registry. I'm listing the steps just for reference.

  • Make sure Cakewalk is closed
  • Open regedit and find the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\Cakewalk\Core
  • Change the value "Migrated Existing Preferences" to 0
  • Next find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR\Cakewalk VST X64
  • Rename this key to something else like "Cakewalk VST X64 Backup"
  • Now run CbB
  • It should bring up the Migration wizard
  • Choose your existing install of SONAR Platinum in the dialog and allow it to migrate
  • This should copy all your VST settings from Platinum

You can also load the project in safe mode by holding down the shift key while opening the project and then skip the plugin that is causing a problem. Then replace that plugin with the proper version, re-save the project and see if it loads ok.
If the problem persists it would be something you should contact Antares support about for a resolution since it appears to be a compatibility issue with their older plugins living side by side.

Thanks very much Noel.

I will give it a try and let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Hi Noel,

I tried your suggestion and CbB imported all of the Sonar settings but it still did the same thing with projects that used HE 4.009 i.e. loaded HE 4.1 instead.

Thanks also for your other workaround (Shift for safe mode) and that worked fine.

However, having now tried HE 4.1 on a couple of new projects it doesn't seem to offer anything worthwhile compared with HE 4.009. So the easiest solution for me is just to uninstall HE 4.1 and keep using 4.009 which works fine in CbB.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions,
ZT

I don't understand why it behaves different in Plat however. Its possibly coincidental and just the order in which it finds the plugin. What happens if you remove or rename 4.009 - does it allow you to load?

I tried renaming HE 4.009 and CbB then loads the project with a missing plugin error but otherwise fine (with HE 4.1 also renamed). As soon as I rename HE 4.1 back to normal and load the project CbB loads HE 4.1 and crashes.

I'm running version V4.007d clearly a little older but still VST3 and x64. Win10 Pro 1709

just to give you some data for comparison.

I opened a project in CbB and added Harmony Engine, did some processing and saved the file. I then opened that saved file in Sonar Platinum and again did some processing with HE and again saved the file. Then I reopened it in CbB again all of this with no problems. I wonder if you have the older version to go back to and try to to see if it works.

CbB and SPlat also both work fine with v4.009. It's only when I add the latest version (4.1.2) in addition to the older version (as recommended by Antares) that CbB loads the incorrect version of the plugin and crashes. I'm on Win 10 Home 1709 with latest updates.

By the way, Antares version naming/management seems a little bit suspect as when you download 4.009 from their website the file is called Harmony_Engine_Evo_PC_v4.0.0.9.zip and this unzips to Harmony Engine PC v4009 64-bit.exe. When you install it however and right click on the .dll file and show properties/details it is listed as v4.0.0.7 dated 11/10/2013. Furthermore in Control Panel it is shown as v 4.0.0!

Is it the same with your version mudgel?

I’m just downloading the latest AVOX 4 and it’s @ V4.0.2 ang Harmony Engine is V4.1.

I’ll examine further once the download is finished and installed later this evening.

Update. I’ve repeated what I did earlier with the updated version of AVOX including Harmony Engine and it works the same. No crashes and the same lungs and projects work the same in both Splat and CbB. Sorry I can’t be more help.

BTW. I installed HE as part of AVOX4 not a standalone installer just for Harmony. I would just ignore Antares instructions and just use the one plugin.
