Celebration (A video of my shortcomings)

Hi,

Tonight I was upbeat and inspired (due to the feedback and overall positive reactions to my Christmas EP)... and I came up with a new piece of music.I've called it Celebration, and I also persuaded my wife to video me playing it! I made a few mistakes as I was very nervous being filmed... but hopefully it doesn't sound too bad!

http://youtu.be/VgLunWaJ19s

Also, as I listen to it I can hear how it should really be arranged... with guitars, synths, percussion, etc so it will probably be on a future album with a different arrangement.

Anyway... I hope you enjoy it.

Cheers,
Terry.
PS: Watching the video I can see that my technique sucks... my left wrist is far too rigid and my elbows are too mobile! I sometimes wonder why I get a sore wrist after playing a lot, and now I see why!

    Dang, nothing wrong with that playing.  Good sound quality.  Is that from the camera mic?

    Thanks for the compliment!

    The sound was recorded via Line Out at the same time as recording the video on my son's low-budget camera... and then I synced them afterwards in Sonar X1.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

    BRAVO!!! That was brilliant!  Wonderful composition and great playing!  I can't wait to hear it fully produced, although it's great just the way it is.

    And I agree...you should be celebrating!  :)

    (was it hard to sync them afterwards?)

    Hi,

    Thanks for watching!

    @Janet - glad you liked it. Synchronising them was really easy - I recorded the audio directly into Sonar and imported the video afterwards. Then it was just a case of moving the audio (with grid snapping turned off) until the video and the audio appeared to match. It's hard to know if it was exact but I was quite pleased with the result.

    @Rhynosynth - Thanks! Is watching better than just listening...? I'm not sure whether to make the effort to record videos or whether to just post audio files on Soundcloud, etc...

    Cheers,
    Terry.

    If you can play that well live, videos would be a great way to go. But the pros are crazy good at it, so if you want to compete with them, you'd have to put quite a bit of work into it. If it's just for our enjoyment, then carry on as you are. I love watching musicians' hands at their craft. :)

    Just to clarify (coz I'm not sure what you mean by "if you can play that well live")... it was live... I recorded the audio into Sonar at the same time as recording the video on camera and then just made sure the start times matched up. I was tempted to record the MIDI into Sonar at the same time and then tweak it but thought it better to do a 'warts and all' approach.

    But you're right... to compete with the pros I'd need to put lots of work into it - or cheat by recording the MIDI and then tweaking. In fact, I could record it slower than needed, correct the notes, increase the tempo in Sonar, and then speed up the video by the same amount... Then maybe I could come close to competing with them! ;-)

    Cheers,
    Terry.

    No, no, no....I KNOW you can play that well cause I just saw you do it!  I should have said SINCE you can play that well.  :)

    But I don't mean you'd need to do any better at playing. Just the videoing....like that link you sent me of Robert Peeters playing.  You already play fantastically.  :)

    Nice preasentation!  I commented on YouTube (for the first time ever) and don't know if it worked.  You play very well.  It was killing me to watch that technique, WAIT, that's a lie!!  All looked good and sounded good to me.

    Hi,

    @Janet - sorry, I got the wrong end of the stick... I understand now!

    @Scottytunes - thanks! I will... ;-)

    @Warren - thanks for the comment on YouTube.. you must have been logged in to the YouTube site as someone else because both your comments showed as "KenBo"! Each time I look at the video I cringe at my stiff left wrist, and rigid pinkie... but there's often nobody as critical as ourselves (unless you're married of course ;-) )

    Cheers,

    @malcolm - cheers Malcolm! Thanks for listening, and the compliments.

    @bapu - thanks man!

    @Guitarpima - Glad you enjoyed it. It took great skill and attention to detail to get my elbow to pixelate just right. :)

    Thanks again to everyone for listening.

    What an enviable performance and piece!  What if I heard this in a nursing home?

    You made the piano rise up and walk and talk!  Hahah!

    All ask: "How much did you practice this beforehand (including the finger sliding)?"

    Thanks so much for sharing this!

    Hi,

    @James - thanks! It comes from years of forced lessons as a kid...!

    @philip - it was probably only the 4th or 5th time I'd played it through. The finger sliding bit was only added the time before recording.

    @timidi - thanks!

    Hi,

    @Janet - well, I'd noodled about a bit first before getting it together to practice it 3 or 4 times before recording.

    @geeare1 - I guess they're not obvious - I can see that my left hand needs a lot of work before the technique will be good enough for me to be proud of.

    @Scoobie - thanks!

    @karalie / IJenneh - thanks

    @lhansen - thanks to you too!

    Thanks again for listening.

    I really enjoyed recording this while being filmed (even thought it made me a bit nervous to be 'live' as it were) so I'll probably do it again some time soon!

    Cheers,
    Terry.
