"Cerulean Sojourn" - album released 1/24/15
Thanks in part to many of the kind and helpful folks here on this forum, I've finally released an album of my electronic songs. Thank you all for your mix and arrangement suggestions over the last couple of years - I really have tried hard to listen and grow through the process of posting several of the tracks here. Extra special thanks go out to Clint Martin (who played a fantastic guitar solo one one track). The album is available on Bandcamp, as well as the usual download marketplaces (iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, etc.). "Cerulean Sojourn" is an eclectic tour of (mostly) downtempo groove/chill electronica, incorporating elements of funk, dance, blues and ambient music. This music is best played relatively loudly, with the lights down low. It's recommended to make use of a comfy couch while listening. And maybe a cocktail. Enjoy! http://waltcollins.bandcamp.com/album/cerulean-sojourn https://soundcloud.com/arcanor/sets/cerulean-sojourn-album

Congrats on finishing a long project Walt! I know it feels pretty good to let something be. It's hard to do, but it's a relief. Now it's time to start another!

Thanks again Clint! Yeah, I'm liking Bandcamp more and more. I get 100% of revenues there! And I can set my own pricing, which is huge. Unlike iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, etc., who all take a big sales commission, and sell everything at the same price with no choice for the artists. So I can sell the album on Bandcamp for $7 (instead of $9.99 on iTunes) and make the same net income (since iTunes takes a 30% cut). It goes straight into my paypal account. Awesome! Plus they have very nice statistics, etc. Extremely artist-friendly site.

I listened to Cerulean Sojourn. Your work is always exceptional, Walt. In the beginning is that a synth flute or a real one? I could actually picture you there playing it. I have always said that instrumental electronica CAN be boring (to me). You manage to keep it interesting. The quality of the work is so high that it's hard to turn it off. I wish you all the best luck on your CD!!

Thanks so much Warren! The flute on that song (Cerulean Sojourn) is a sampled Shakuhachi, which I played using NI Kontakt. In fact, I've used it on other songs as well, because I like it so much (see Neptune's Oceans, for example).

Yeah, here's the thing - I've been listening to music in this genre for many years now, and I always marvel at how creative producers of this groove electronica can be. It's where great basslines meet synth swirls meets weird spoken word phrases from some '50's film. Plus groovy drums of course. Plus, weaving in natural acoustic instruments like guitars. I think it's where the future of music is. Your taste can and will vary, of course! Anyway, Walt's effort is, simply put, one of the best of its kind. and to think I found it on the Songs forum at the Cakewalk site! Walt's mixes, somehow, have a nearly equal and even blend of the instruments. Nothing seems to "stick out" in the mix, there is no false prominence that seems weird. Yet everything comes through super clearly - no two sound sources run on top of each other. I'd really like to learn to eq like that! Another standout is the drums/percussion - it's brilliant, Walt how much time (in years)did you spend programming all that? Are you a drummer, did you spend good money on samples, or just hella skilled in Piano Roll View? Either way I'd say it's the percussion that drives your album, and I usually think of it as just a side dish on a few songs. Yet you have tasteful percussion choices all over the place in every song. Very well done. It is more than flavored with a few sounds and rhythms from "world beat" territory, so expect a few international intrigues along the way. This shows that Walt has some pretty strong and varied songwriting chops. Apart from the spoken word elements, there's not much else in the way of vocals. I guess one song has a "vocaloid"-style female singer, and I don't know too much about that area. I'd love to hear some more vocals, but that is not prominent in the genre so no biggie. If you are any kind of fan of this genre, or have heard of Boards of Canada, Bent, Darshan Ambient, Sounds from the Ground, Fila Brazillia, Global Communication, Jon Hopkins, Lusine, Mocean Worker, Tosca . . . you should go get Walt's work pronto. One complaint I have with the genre is that sometimes, the composer has a lack of musical imagination, and things can get pretty repetitive . . . Walt has no problems here. And even if you don't like this genre much, it's a mixing clinic. Sorry for the long review, but there you have it. Thanks Walt, I don't know how you are going to get this famous, but it deserves to be. -Tom

Just listened to Cerulean Sojourn.. Great groove going on, funky and tight with a nice touch of electronics. And yeah, Clint's playing is sweet. Love the "breakdown" at the end. Oh, and Neptune's Oceans just started... Cool! Love the sitar and strings over the electronic beat. Good stuff.
