Change MIDI channel for all notes on a staff ...

Hello ...

I have dozens and dozens of MDI files (generated by playing on a MIDI organ). Each MIDI track represents one manual keyboard and the pedalboard, and has its own MIDI channel number.

I want to change the MIDI channel number of all notes in a given track (piano roll view) or staff (score/staff view). But it seems that I can only change the MIDI channel number of one note at a time. But that will take me well into the next century.

So how can I change the MIDI channel of all notes in a given staff, or for that matter of all notes in a given selection?

Please explain step by step, because I don't find all the panes and their options and objects that can be displayed in Sonar very well described.

Many thanks, and I'll buy a pint to the supplier of a good answer!

Ken

Make sure the Event Inspector module is showing in the Control Bar. You can right-click the background of the Control Bar to determine which modules are showing.

Then make your note selection and simply type a new channel number into the Channel parameter of the Event Inspector.

Check out this free video for more detailed info on the Event Inspector in SONAR:

I would use the Find/Replace option in the Process menu. (the old interpolate option)

Select the clips in the Track View and call up that command. Channel filter options are under "All Non-Special Events"

FakerBoy is right about Find/Change, but the setting in Inpsector Scott talks about can/will override the channels you see in the event list.  So, the event list can say channel 3 but the whole track will be output to channel 6 is that's what is set in Inspector.

Many versions ago you could pick whether to obey the event channels or the overall track channel.  I haven't seen that option is so long that I don't know if it still exists.

Ken, you've already been given answers that will do what you want.  You should go look at the Event Inspector video tutorial Scott posted - after watching, you'll understand everything about that very useful tool.

I'm adding one more method of doing what you want, because it's all I ever do, and so I feel it's the simplest approach.

You asked how to change the MIDI channel for everything "on a staff"--that would indicate you want to change the MIDI channel of an entire track.  In the Track View, all those notes will be on one track.  By default, you have the Track Inspector visible on the left side of the screen.  The MIDI channel menu in that determines what channel that track will play on.

When I set up my MIDI tracks for a project, all I need to do is choose the channel I want there on the track - then with my MIDI keyboard always set to transmitting on channel 1, the correct soft synth instrument plays automatically just by selecting the track.  It makes MIDI production extremely simple and straight forward, without needing to do any special filtering or further twiddling.

A quick example of what else can be done by setting the MIDI channel in the Track View - I've recorded a track intended for a Flute.  During the arranging process, I decide I want to try an Oboe out on that track instead.  I just change the MIDI channel to the one my Oboe is on in my sampler/synth.  Instant auditioning of the new instrument.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful hints & comments.
I have managed to do what I needed to do and I shall watch Scott's video suggestion.

Incidentally, I have put forward a small suggestion for an enhancement: namely, that the little "Note Edit" dialogue that pops up under "Properties", when you right click on a single note or a selection of notes on a score/staff, should give us a tick box so that a MIDI channel (or other) change can be applied to the entire selection of notes or just to the actual note that was right-clicked.

    Thanks again,

    Ken
