Change Where Bars Start?

So I had posted a month or two ago about being able to move a video on the timeline and unfortunately it looks like it's just not gonna happen unless I convert videos to very specific formats before importing (something with X3's video engine). So I've accepted that and I'm working around it for now, HOWEVER I had an idea that could be an alternate way to solve my problem:

Is there a way to make the first bar of the project NOT start at 0:00?  You see the problem is if I'm scoring a video and I need the beat to start at exactly (I'm making up an arbitrary time here) 0:40... And if 0:40 doesn't line up with a bar x:00:000, then the beat is going to be off from the video. I could then just slide everything back from the nearest bar to 0:40 in the timeline, HOWEVER if I go to try to start adding more to that loop, it's not situated between bars evenly and it's going to be hard to keep adding to the track and looping new layers. Now of course later in the piece depending on the timing of the edit of the video things could change but at least if i can get the very first beat to start at the right spot, I can work around it from there.

Hopefully everything I'm saying makes sense :-) Any help would be appreciated as always.

Are you working MBT?
I expect you could do stuff easier if you went to SMPTE time for the project and used "markers", but I really have no experience with video synchronizing myself. Even if you can't get into the video view because of a format mismatch, real time should be a lot easier to work with than musical time.

I think for a lot of composers and projects that would work, but especially in the particular project I'm working on now, it is very much like a hip-hop beat that is required, so working between the 4/4 bars is best, I just need the first bar to start not at 0:00 because then there is no bar that hits right at the title of the video.

Well a really ugly kludge might be to adjust the tempo of the first bar calculated to move the project by the amount you need to shift later,  and fill the first bar with silent events. Then insert a tempo change on subsequent bars at the rate that works for your music.

That's not bad actually. It's so less than ideal haha, but it could just work. I'm going to play around with that later today. Thanks.

And if anyone else has any ideas, keep em coming :-)

Just a little update... I did the tempo change idea with some blank bars of tempo and while it's messy, it certainly worked. Only took two guesses of alternate tempos to get the first bar of my beat to end up on the spot in the video where it was supposed to haha.

Hopefully they make it where you can move videos around in X4.

That's a pretty clever workaround even though it's a kludge, glad it worked for you. Agreed it would be nice to move videos on the timeline...

I've wanted the ability to start projects at negative bar numbers for a long time, or even better an offset space with no time at the beginning. It would be nice to have the first beat land on the first beat of the actual music.

Let's all keep pushing them. It can't be THAT hard to implement :-) Seriously, Bar 1 to start at some point in time that isn't 0:00. Seems like such a smart feature to have.

A BIG +1

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better.

Then let's all go to the new Feature forum

and put in the request. You can then discuss how your idea to implement it would go and others vote on it, yes or no.

Pretty sweet!
