Change pitch but not tempo
Hello all! Excited to be making my first post! On to my question... I've been using my Sonar 8.5 for the last four months and as a newbie, I always have questions. I'm wondering if 8.5 has the capability to change the pitch of a track without changing the tempo? For the last ten years or so, I have been using a Roland BR-8 to do my recording, so I have lots of valuable material that I have been digitally transferring onto the 8.5. One particular track is a great guitar recording that's tuned a little lower than the standard pitch. Maybe a quarter note. Since the BR-8 syncs up with the tempo of the 8.5, I only want to change the guitar tracks pitch. Can I do this with Sonar 8.5, or do I have to get a plug in for this application? Thanks - Richard

Once you transfer your tracks into Sonar there are tools to change the pitch. I've never had to use them ( I use Wave lab for this) so not sure of the quality of results. Worth a try, you can always use UNDO. Highlight the guitar track go to Process/ Audio efx-look for Cakewalk then time pitch stretch .

CW time pitch 2 works fairly well. Use the best settings. Also, for a particular keyboard/piano type part I found one of the Reaper tools to be the best compared to the tools in Sonar, Audacity, and many others I downloaded, free and demo. J

The best way to change pitch that I've found is to use V-vocal. Just highlight the whole track, zoom in and manually make the adjustment by grabbing a spot that is on a grid line and move it up to the next grid line or however far you want to change the pitch. There is a transpose function, but it takes a long time to process the track, and I find it leaves artifacts sometimes. I've never had much luck with the the pitch plugin and I've never been able to get Pitch 2 to work at all in 32 bit or 64 bit.

The OP doesn't tell which SONAR he's using. IIRC V-Vocal is in Producer only (???). Also, a guitar track should have a very clean sound for V-Vocal to read.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Unfortunately I didnt get to try anything tonight, but will over the weekend. I do have Sonar 8.5 Producer with V-Vocal and the "Pitch Stretch" function. The guitar track in question is slightly distorted and the effect cannot be taken off. Thanks for all of the tips. I will let you know how things workout when I get the chance. Of course this family thing keeps getting in the way of whats really important ya know! ;-)

I hear what your sayin Johnny - but there are a couple of problems. #1 - Its not me playing the guitar here. Its the lead guitarist from the band I'm in. I wish I could play like him! Its just a pain in the hind quarters to get him over to the house to do it again. #2 - I've been having a lot of success with the quality of what I'm transfering over from my BR-8, and this take is really a keeper. Thats why I want to just save it and move on if that makes sense.

Don't get me wrong, I was generalizing anyhow. There are many cases where you need to keep a track no matter what, so out comes the tool box. I just spent 4 hours on a vocal track for the same reason you are experiencing. She lives 600 miles away. Here's what I did: I clone the track first to make a working copy. Changing pitch by a tiny amount should not be a problem. It's when you ask it to jump a half an octave when things go south. If the whole track is out by a known amount then apply that correction. If it's a few bad notes use ALT and mouse to highlight that one part and process it. Having the original track side by side also allowed me to steal "good parts" and copy and paste into the working track. Handy if a song has repeted words or liks. I do this with Bass parts too. This is the wonderful thing about working in a DAW. Cheat like h''' As I said , nothing to loose by trying, just keep back up of original and use UNDO and try different settings if first attempt goes bad. Don't forget to "save" as you go.

Okay... I finally got some time to experiment with this. Johnny, I tried the "Cakewalk pitch shift/Time Stretch 2" and it gives you a simple matrix. I needed to raise the pitch a quarter note and keep the tempo the same. I kept the tempo at 100% and changed the pitch setting to +.25. I let it do its thing and then listened to the playback along with the drums. The pitch came into tune and there wasn't any quality lost, but the rythme of the guitar wasn't quite jiving with the beat. I then put the original track next to the new track to check if the waves lined up. (Forgive me if I don't know the right terminology) The new track is as long as the old track but plays slightly ahead during the first half of the song, then slightly behind during the second half of the song. I noticed that there were advanced settings but I wasn't exactly sure what they were for. What is formant do? Anybody an expert with "Cakewalk pitch shift/Time Stretch 2"?
