Changing not length in Staff View

Hi All,
 
I've been using Cakewalk since the first release. In every version that I've had, including Music Creator which is low end, the staff view has always allowed you to select whole, half, quater, eight notes and so on, up to 32nd notes. I can't find how to select different note lengths in SONAR Essentials X1. It doesn't help that the folks at support say it works exactly the same as all earlier versions, because it manifestly doesn't.
 
I know that you can change note length by right clicking and changing the numerical valued, but that's clumsy and doesn't help with note lacement. I know you can use pinao roll and yada, yada. However, what gives with staff view. Is there a button I'm missing?
