Changing the default VST location for Windows?

I've got a situation where every VST I install tries to default to a C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\VST.

I guess it is because I isntalled SONAR first and did allow it to place it's VSTs in that directory.

My general use VST are going into C:\Program Files\Vstplugins or C:\Program Files (x86)\Vstplugins

I used Regedit to look at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE >

and the only place I can find a listing for a VST path is within the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Cakewalk Music Software > VSTPlugins.

I was hoping to find something like HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > VSTPlugins so that I can change the path for most of the VST installs I attempt.

What choices do I have at this point? Should I remove the VSTPLugins key within Cakewalk Music Software and add a key in SOFTWARE?

Thanks.

best regards,
mike

    Hi Mike,
When installing any VST's, it should give you a choice of selecting which folder to install (even though the default path is C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\VST). Then, you can select the location (or "Change") where you want the VST's to reside.

If you're looking to change the actual default location through Regedit, hopefully someone else will chime in on that.

    Best of luck! :)

Yes, I have done the change in that dialog, as you suggest, about 20 times this morning.

I do want to change the registry if possible.

    Thanks.

I just found a post that explained that I might find a tag here:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Wow6432Node > VST > VSTPluginsPath

It would be ideal if most of VST installs defaulted to where I want while anything for Cakewalk would still be able to find the Cakewalk\VSTPlugins folder.
