Channel Tools

Is there a difference between panning a stereo track using the track's pan control, or using Channel Tools?

    If my understanding is correct, using the track panning knob controls the amount of each of the two stereo tracks.  This is not a problem if both tracks are identical.  However if recorded with 2 mics as well as many  Midi  generate VST audio tracks there are diffences between the two side.  Here using the channel tools would by far be the better choice as you can adjust the panning and keep all the sound from both sides with just a narrower image.
