Charming Man

Just finished this and my ears are shot.  Is it a little fizzy on the high end?  I am not sure.  It sounds thin compared to some of the mixes I have heard on this forum today.  Any comments, criticism or praise appreciated.

BTW the song is not autobigraphical.  My 7 year old came in today and said "but Daddy you are a charming man!"

Well, definitely a charming tune, Daddy!  At first I was a little hesitant about the mix and then I realized that's just how it had to be. Sometimes it takes me a while.  :-)  Very cool tune and a really nice production!!  REALLY NICE!

Thanks.  I took a listen with fresh ears.  Sound like there is too much reverb on the ukulele and I cant hear the tuba.  Will have to fix these.

You know I can dance, you know I can dance. hehe Sorry, this song made me have a Leo Sayer flash back. It's even in the same key iirc, yep it is. hehe!

I think it's a good mix. I don't think I'd change a thing. I like this a lot! Only thing I might suggest is a fade out rather than a sudden stop.

This is great!!  Like bub, I wouldn't change a thing its got a bit of that live on the floor recording feel that perfectly suits the song.

If there was one little minor crit is the crash symbols..I would try to find a bass note or some supporting low end instrument to give it thump instead of just "crash" but that is such a minor point..I know...try a tuba hit at the same time?

    Really really good!

    Hey, Sunny,

Very cool, catchy little song with comfortable "70's radio" vibe!   And the mix sounds great, nice work.

Thanks everyone.  I have a sense that I need to dial reverb on this .  Would you agree?

I listened to it on my Yamaha HS-80m's. They are very telling, especially on the high end and I didn't hear anything that stood out too me.

Only on laptop so can't comment too much in mix terms, but the crash cymbals are coming across quite loud in comparison to the rest. The song is indeed charming. I wasn't sure at first to be honest, but it had already grown on me by the end, so I'm sure you'd have me singing along with few more listens.

Wow! Maybe a bit of high EQ roll-off on the uke and add some compression to the tuba to help it stand out in the mix. The cymbals are a bit over the top too...maybe roll off some highs and possibly drop the level if the EQ doesn't fix it.

Thanks everyone.  Now that everyone is mentioning it I notice the highs too.  Now when will I get the skill to figure these things out for myself???  The issues are sort of obvious now that you all mention it.

Your 7 year old said 'Daddy, you're a charming man?'  What a charmer! :-)

Yeah, I love it too.  Great tune and I love the arrangement.  That tuba part is superb.  And the sax?--I love the way it sneaks in and out. Great vocals and great rhythm section.  Yep, great job!  :-)

    Great song and arrangement.

I love the tuba and clarinet (?).

What are you using for the tuba?  It sounds great.

Tuba, clarinet and a ukulele? It just doesn't get any better.

Thanks.  Yes clarinet.  The tuba is midi driving through VSL which despite its classical leanings seems to step up to the plate in terms of tone.

I like the song but for me the drum track could use a bit of adjustment in the mix , maybe back off the reverb some might help .

Great job on everything else .

actually really fun stuff, you got the retro vibe perfect, esp love the tuba as bass! vocals are awesome. a little crashy in the highs (cymbals) but we'll put that down to Soundclick! love the clarinet too.

    awesome!

Incredible!  What a clean mix!  I really liked this. Cymbals might be a little loud, but not a real deal killer.

What are you using for a vocal mike?  It really suits your voice!

Gotta love the tuba for the low end!

Refreshingly different and thoroughly enjoyable tune with clever lyrics.  I liked this alot.  Nice job on the harmonies and the clarinet lead is just great.  My only crit was mentioned previously, and that would be that the crash cymbal is just a bit too 'crashy' at times.  Overall though, an excellent job.

Thanks for the comments.  I have tamed the cymbals and also compressed the tuba a little more.  Would love some feedback to make sure that I have not buggered the rest up.

It means a lot to me when you say that the mix is clean.  For personal reasons I am stuck in a little apartment for now and am recording and mixing in my bedroom which is small and square.  I was worried about not getting the mixing right in a totally untreated small room.  However what saved me was IK multimedias ARC- probably the best thing  that has happened to home recording.  The mic is a Neumann TLM 103.  Yes I love this mic.

I was just thinking that this sounded just right for the stage when I noticed you're writing a mini-musical. In fact I think the drums are just right for that setting too. Good songwriting, a clever tune that I like a lot.

Sunny, I really enjoyed this also all across the board. Really refreshing...reminded me of something the Beatles would do for some reason....I would love to hear more harmony presence on this...but what you did was fine.

My only crits would be...just two.

    1. I like the Tuba concept. However, at times some of the notes were "drifty" to the point of sounding a little too out of key. The right notes were played...but I'm saying, Tuba is one of those weird pitch instruments. It always drifts a little in pitch. I felt this drifted a bit too much in spots and I personally would have loved to have heard an up-right bass used in this to give it a bit more of a solid, consistent low end.

    2. The clarinet was fabulous! However, sometimes it lashed out a bit too loud and over-powered things. I would definitely compress it ever so slightly and back it down in the mix a bit. The verb on it was a bit too much in my opinion as well...and trust me, I'm a verb lover. But it sounded like you had the core instruments in the same room...and in comes this clarinet out of nowhere with this big room sound on it that in my opinion, really didn't fit with the rest of the instrumentation...if that makes sense? The part played as well as the instrument chosen was spot on...it just had this apparent room sound where the other instruments didn't have that same room ambiance...and the volume was a bit too loud, that's all.

But over-all, this was a joy to listen to...thanks so much for posting it! Great song! :)

Well I was thinking what to write as I was reading the other comments and Danny has saved me from most of my typing. I agree with all the above, except I rwally love the Tuba. I might knock it down 1.5 or 2 db, but I like it.
