Charting on Billboard for First Time

Hey All,
I just wanted to post a song that is currently charting on Billboard Smooth Jazz National Airplay. I've never charted before, so I'm kind of excited!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RZa-fE7Gek
It's not high on the chart, and it could fall off at any moment, but it's there for at least a week! lol! Horn arrangements and recording done in Sonar.

That is awesome! Congrats.  Great track, so can hear why it is there.  Been a lifetime David Sanborn fan, and this track is at his level.  Nicely done.

Excellent performance. The sax is remarkably well-recorded and slickly double-tracked. Close miked? Use of reverb is just right. Nicely balanced mix. We'd all love to hear the technical details, Charley. Was this recorded in a home studio or a professional space? Did you mix and/or master it yourself?

Thank you so much! I'm happy to give some details.

I recorded with an SM-98, which sorta cracks me up. I have "better" mics, including a fairly nice ribbon. But that's the sound that seemed to work best for me, and the one that my producer liked. Yes, close tracked. At home.

My mic pre is just an old Aardvark Q10. I use an older version of Sonar. Sonar 5.2. I do have my room treated with bass traps, diffusers, absorbent materials, and a wood floor. But, again, I close track... so... it probably helps a little, but...

My producer (Nils, a fairly big name in this genre) mixed the tracks. He told me he doesn't use much EQ on my horns, if any. It was mastered by Ron Boustead, Resolution Mastering.

The album has some well-known players, including Alex Al (bassist for Michael Jackson), Oliver Brown (percussion), and Nils (guitars), and Richard Rightman (drums). But this track is pretty much just me and Nils.

I wrote half the songs, and Nils wrote the other half of the songs. Nils wrote this one. I trust him to know what is "radio friendly."

I wish I could tell you what he uses for ambience on my horn. Frankly, I'd like to know for my own personal edification. But, I agree, it's pretty perfect. Since he is able to quickly provide me alternate mixes on request, I'm sure it's plugins.

Glad you like the double tracking and harmonies. I had fun experimenting with that. 😊

If you perform on this genre, I'd recommend Nils as a producer in a heartbeat. He's got his own Billboard #1s, and he's produced those for others. Except, then you'd be competing with me... so, scratch that. He sucks. 😂

Nils is wonderful to work with. He's become a friend and mentor.

Not in the intro. After that, it's synth bass. That said, there is plenty of great bass playing on other songs, including Alex Al (Michael Jackson) and Darryl Williams.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to listen and comment. I hope it was an encouragement to you. I didn't get a Grammy or a #1, but Billboard is an accomplishment I went after wholeheartedly.

I will be the first to say that I am not the most talented sax player. Not even in Sacramento. I'm not even the hardest working. Yeah, I have some talent and I work hard... but more importantly, I set some goals and stayed in the game. I didn't quit. I'm turning 55 next year.

I know some of you are parents and teachers. I'm saying this for the benefit of those younger folks you might have influence over. It's a life lesson that is worth learning.

You sound awesome Charley! I'll admit I'm not the biggest listener of smooth jazz, I lean more towards neo-soul/RnB, and swing/traditional pop myself, but the track is excellent. Congrats!

That sounds freakin' great!   Nice clear mix, great use of space.   But most important, it sounds like you've completely nailed your parts and just have a naturally good tone.  I've played with a few sax players over the years and I think the word I'd use here is "pro".

    Congrats!
