Cheap car insurance?

I just picked up a very cheap beater car to get me from point A to point B until I earn enough money for a "real" car.  Because I was covered under someone else's insurance for the last year, my previous insurance company wants to stick me with an extra $36 a month (only because I can't prove I was insured over the last 30 days).  That makes the insurance for the year about as much as the car is worth!

Does anyone have a cheap insurance company that they can recommend?  I'm thinking I'd like a six-month policy then I can switch back to the better company later (when I, hopefully, have a much better car as well).

TIA!

in Texas you can get insurance from some companies who have contracts only by the month.  so when someone is in your situation they go to this type of company, get insurance for 30 days (at about 2x what you would normally pay at a "regular" insurance company), drop them and take your proof to the regular insurance company and get them signed up at regular prices without the extra cost for the next 12 months.

it's not ideal, but a lot cheaper in the long run.

Done.  (And, boy, am I glad to have that over with!)

Found a six-month term that takes PayPal for exactly the same amount as the first payment would have been with my old insurance.

So, on to the next issue - lol.

Cheap insurance for an old car?

Sounds like a fair exchange to me.

The value of auto insurance for most of us with some kind of asset other than the car is in the liability coverage. A beater does not deserve a high coverage or low deductible for the collision or comprehensive, and it is easy enough to find an insurance company that will recognize that it has little to lose on that aspect of coverage. But most insurance companies price their liability product based on the assumption that, although you may be driving a $200.00 car, the guy you crash into may be driving a Rolls full of bank executives and their lawyers. If you have nothing else to lose, then the minimum liability required by the state may be enough, and probably will not be very expensive. If you own a house, or have any expectation of significant future earnings, you may not want to gamble on that minimum liability. For equal limits, there is probably not a lot to lose by going with a "cheap" insurance company, compared to a prestigious company based on some expectation of better service.

Yep.  Since the banks already took everything I used to own, I have nothing left to lose so I just wanted to make sure that everything except the car were well covered (medical, property, etc.).  In 35 years of driving, I've never had a real ticket and my only accident occurred when I was stopped at a traffic light over 25 years ago...  Pretty dang good considering the majority of that driving was down in Southern California!
