"Choices"

is the low end in this one dialed in enough to use as a go-by for mastering?
translation?

or too high mid-bright?

You seem to be getting mostly "I like it" answers, but I think you're right to question the amount of bottom end you have - it sounds a little light and mid-bright to me.  Keeping in mind of course that this is always a subjective matter, and you'll find that for every 'it's fine' answer you get you'll have another person thinking it's wrong.  So you should do it the way you like it, and it sounds like maybe you think it's off a little bit.

Hi BB, there's plenty of low end listening on my Akg headphones. Very nice tune, great vocals, so so guitars................ who am I kidding, fantastic guitars as ever. Almost makes me want to buy an electric guitar again.

Ya, I think the bass is a little mid-bright (but that is not it either - it's the low end down to E not being a bit louder - then I suppose the bassdrum has to go up a bit also in volume), but the upper bass to me is okay in volume but when going down to the low notes a bit more volume would help I think to actively set the song off. I like the tone of the bass as it is right now so adding a bit more volume when it goes down and not changing the tone would be what I would want, and then of course the bassdrum synced with it also a bit louder.

Hey, I like the Nuno Bettencourt suspended chord at :54. I always liked when he added that in his songs with Extreme.

I'm listening on Harman/Kardon PC speakers. From what I'm hearing, the song is well balanced. Because these speakers don't have a broad dynamic range, I can only tell you what I'm hearing compared to other songs. You may want to bring up the 500hz (+-) a tad for the bass.

The highs might be a touch bright on the left-channel acoustic strumming. The picking sounds very good at around 1:25, so you may want to use that tone as a gauge for the other acoustics.

I hope this helps! Great song by the way,

Jeez Bat. I mean... like... who am I kidding here... I just can't find the words... really. I'm listening on the cans right now (ATH M50) and... like it's...  oh hang on, I need to listen to this on the speakers... and push it a tad.

IMHO and as a personal preference, I would push the lows a tiny tad more. That's it that's all. Listening on my JBL 4326. It really sounds great, high or low volume. An amazing listen. The whole audio package. Pro stuff to my ears. Bravo and thanks for posting!

superb really, BB, as ever. I agree kick could have a little more definition, a but more click. bass sounds pretty good, yes perhaps a touch more presence but gives good low end from my perspective. vox might like a couple more dB...

thanks for all the comments, guys...

first, an overall response to everyone who has responded......

this song, is a finished song off of my 1st album, and this was professionally mastered.

i asked the M.E. not to change the basic overall sound of my mix at that time (2006) and to give me a nice transparent finish for clarity and volume with a miniumum of squish.

he did exactly that..... and my low end mix decisions were a little light, obviously, i was taking no chances.

now, as i get ready to master my own 2nd album, i'm looking at this finished mix as a 'go-by' to determine how low i should, or shouldn't go.....

good. that was one of the things i discussed with the mastering dude... good translation on all systems...
and maybe that's why it made sense at the time, to go a little bass-lite

i see you're new around here, thanks for coming into my thread...
your assessment jives with my own...
and to tell you the truth, when i crank this particular mix thru a big home stereo, that has a bit of low end boost on it, it sounds just perfect.
but for the majority of listeners who might just be stuck with ear buds, unless they have the buds with the extended low end it will probably sound a bit weak in the low end....(i have a pair of sony Funtopias, that just rock in the low end with light bass mixes, on heavy bass mixes, they sound like mud!)

thanks freddy...... it was fun blending the acoustics and electrics together, sometimes i think i should do this on ALL my tunes..

thanks danny...... yes more low end. i'm going to do that on my new tunes...

    morenoise
    low end on AKG's, check.
it's funny, when you think about trying to spread the difference over so many different types of playback choices, and ride the fence, it's A TOUGH DECISION.
i learned a lot from making THAT decision on this mix... but  i want a more modern sound now, so i'm pushing the envelope with the low end on my more recent mixes....

    spaceALF
    thanks man, appreciate the comment.
and you're right, it's not just bass, the whole low end component would have to shift, and that would mean re-eq'ing almost every track in some fashion, to get it to sit as well as it does now.

    asher/matthew
thanks for the comments as well...... yeah, ole nuno was really cool about throwing the non-standard chords,  i always dug the extreme stuff.
yeah, i didn't nail the acoustic eq, but that high end seemed to balance out something else on the other side..
i should have tamed the 2-3.5khz range for that pick attack to be more mellow.
    good ear.

bass-more presence, i hear you... i've been working on that with the new stuff going for deeper tones, but that still have a bit of bite on it. not so much like old P-bass classic tones, but not piano string modern either.

    Hey, Rob,

I just wanted to say that this sounds absolutely dynamite, as all of your stuff does!

I do agree with the previous comments about possibly bumping up the low end when you finish up your new CD.  I also think you're 100% right on the money about the "earbud syndrome" because most stock earbuds have practically no low range, and half the time people don't realize or have any idea what their actually missing while listening on them.

Anyway, it was great to hear this killer song once again, I can't wait for your next new one.    Have a good one, buddy!

Maybe I was off in explaining it. The EQ would only bring out the low-end more and only a bit more, so major reshuffling would not have to happen.
Like upping 60Hz EQ a decibel or two more.

    Nice tune playing singing etc.

The kick would appear to have a nice punch to it I agree the bass could do with a touch more presence, which is as observed subjective.

    Loved It!!!
I agree with ya on the low end and mids.  Not quite sure but kinda sounds to me like guitars could be drug down just a tad.  Sounds like the HiHats, rides and crashes get lost just a bit at times, low volume at times?
    Great job, enjoyed it  :)

Im just a hobbiest though so take it for what its worth, what you want it to sound like is most important.  ;)

    Janet
    THANKS  for checking this out...
you know, figuring these things out really DOES take a/bing.....
i typically use several of my favorite major label releases as a 'go-by' for deciding eq and overall 'density'

you get the density from the way you compress, and limit...
and of course, the eq is totally subjective, but you'd be amazed at how typical eq curves can be among similar genre styles....

    spacealf
i think your explanation was fine.
sometimes i just go off on an idea, in another direction.....
i think you are right, it needed a bit more 'density' in the low end, by that was my mix.
the mastering engineer did not change anything enough to make up for my lack of low end in the mix, and that's exactly what i asked him to do at the time.
i've since changed my mind about how i want to sound, and now i'm making changes in my mixing technique.

using this older file, as a 'check' will help me to know i'm dialing in what i want, knowing exactly how this one played out from the original mixes to the final mastered product.
    thanks again!

    wookie
thank you for listening and commenting.
i think all you guys are getting pretty dialed into making judgements about mixes, in general.
the more you work with mixes, the more you hear the differences.

i can ask my non-mixer buddies for opinions, but it is not the dialed-in stuff i'm looking for, like i get from you guys,.

    thanks again.

    digi2ns
    thanks mike!

    scotty-
yes, earlier song, i explained what i'm doing with it in my first reply...
i'm eq'ing (mixing) my new stuff more beefy in the low end than this stuff, and using this to guide the mix decisions.

    jsaras
    appreciate the comment.

Oh, some days, but from the past.

Sounded fine and still it is up to you.
I'm outta here. (It's perhaps is from playing with bass players who wanted to go down to low E and have it get louder.)

Probably depends more on speakers and listening audience speakers nowadays anyway.
