Choppy playback when moving mouse pointer in track view

Has anyone else experience this or can they confirm?

If I move my mouse cursor around in Sonar 8.5.2 during playback, the playback becomes choppy, stuttered. The more I move my mouse around, the choppier the playback gets. If I hold the mouse cursor steady, playback becomes normal again.

Ok, this is even stranger. If I open a property box for any effect or soft synth and move it all over the screen during playback, playback is normal, no choppiness.

I just installed an ATI Radeon 5450 video card. For sure it can handle the graphics on Sonar 8. Any idea what could be going on here?

Possible bug in Sonar 8.5.2?

Only thing I can think of is that if you installed the video card after sonar already installed it may still be looking for your original sound card and is now using the motherboard instead of the new card.  Maybe try running the 8.5.2 update patch again to see if the Sonar config  finds your new card

I'm talking about a video card here man, not a sound card.

Why did you install the ATI when you already had the nVidia?

The ATI card used passive cooling, no fan noise. Plus it has lower power consumption. And therein lies the problem.

By enabling pointer trails on the mouse cursor, the graphics card has to work a little harder so it doesn't go idle as fast. This seems to have fixed the problem. Very strange indeed. But brings up an interesting point. Why is moving the mouse cursor around in track view so graphics intenstive in Sonar and could it possibly be the cause of all the audio dropouts and stutters people are experiencing on low end laptops with mediocre graphics?

I meant Video card instead of sound card in "it may still be looking for your original sound card" statement.  Sorry

Possibly because they're using a complex program on a "low end laptop" which is a very bad idea. I've been using DAW apps for over 10 years (3 different computers) and I can move my mouse around all over the place and it won't cause dropouts or stuttering.

IRQ conflict between the mouse and the new video card?  You might be able to see this in Device Manager.

If the video card is PCIe, do you have another slot you can try it in?

Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch.  Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

Good point riojazz but if that's the case, then why does enabling pointer trails on the mouse cursor solve my issue? I'm just scratching my head in disbelief. At least I stumbled upon this workaround or I'd be pulling my hair out by now! LOL.

Hmmmm....I too have an ATI card (Radeon HT 2400 XD) and occasionally have this issue. So enabling pointer trails resolved the issue?
I guess I'll try it. Thanks,

Yeah, it did Randy. Let me know if this resolves your issue. We may be on to something here. BTW, you don't have to have the long pointer trails (annoying as hell). I have mine set all the way to the left (short) and it still has the same result. You can virtually tell no difference in the mouse pointer.

Well I was going to go check the trails option and realized I didn't have the latest drivers (Win 7) so maybe that was my issue.
That said it may be a while before I can really test it as I just started a new project (one track laid this morning) and it only does it when I have a bunch of stuff going on.
If I do notice it again I will definitely get the trails happening.
    Thanks very much,
    Randy

Badly written driver?  Anyway, I'm glad you found a workaround.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Well, this card has only been out like two weeks now so maybe they'll work out the bugs in a future release.

Submitted a bug report for this issue today. Not everyone who has this video card is going to figure out this workaround on their own. Sonar seems to be the only application that is affected by my new video card. Adobe Premiere Elements is actually performing better with the new card. It all points to a glitch to me. My only guess is that when the mouse pointer changes shapes as you move through the clips, it causes hiccups in the audio. Why enabling the pointer trails helps, I have no idea. I even tried customizing my pointer with CursorFX but unless I had pointer trails checked in the mouse pointer options, audio glitches galore.

Please chime in all Cakewalk users having issues with ATI graphics cards and mouse pointer glitching the audio during playback!

Cakewalk kicked back my bug report (CWBRN-2547) and said it was a "system-specific" problem and that I should direct it to tech support. I THINK NOT! Come on Cake. This is obviously a software development issue you should discuss with ATI. What if someone else with the same graphics card I purchased buys Sonar and can't use it because his/her audio is all glitched up. Do you think they're going to consider enabling the pointer trails on there mouse? Huh? Nope! They're going to write Sonar off as crappy software and tell all their friends. Work with me here Cake!

Got the same problem with my Sonar X1 Expanded, when a lot of automation and inserts in fx bins, it will glitch when playing with mouse during playback. I have 8G of RAM I will try freezing things up, tracks etc...

I know what you are thinking! but your wrong... I'm not a paranoiac!!
