Christmas Without You (writing challenge) NEW MIX

This is a song that Pat Bishop sent to me, I think last year, and we never worked on it. In discussing wanting to write, she sent this back this year and we actually worked on it.  It's a personal account from her life experience.

We actually worked on 2 songs at the same time, both in regards to this challenge to write on a topic and within a time window. The second one will be posted a bit later as I am still working on some aspects of that song.

So.... here's the first song:  Christmas Without You   http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12572170

Hope you enjoy this kick off to the Christmas season.

Here's the new mix based on comments:  https://app.box.com/s/7qbvmxgrq82yxs8ld853

Very nice Herb.  Smooth sounding, well performed, and great mix.  Perfect for sitting around the tree with a cup of hot chocolate.

Walt: Pat wrote most of the words. She sent it to me, I put the music to it and suggest lyric changes.... it bounced back and forth a few times and we finally arrived at the version you hear.

Kev, Mark, Metal & John....  I'm glad you guys liked it.

Hey Herb, I've been meaning to comment on this song since you posted it.  I love it!!!  It's just a great song, that's all. Beautiful lyrics and fantastic music.  Who played what on this?"  The pedal steel, the mandolin, the fiddle, the piano are all great. The mix is incredible and clear!!!

Hey, just as an offshoot, your voice sounds a lot like Patterson Hood from the "Drive By Truckers".  Your music is different than the Truckers but what I'm saying by that is that you have a lot of sincerity in your voice and it's unique in a good way!!!

You mean steel and mando?   I think I may go back and pull the mando down a bit..... on the intro..... some others who have heard this said something similar about the mando parts

Well written song for the genre Herb, you've honed your craft. Agree about the mando, it's sticking out a bit. I'd maybe soften it down and pan it away from the steel.

Haven't heard all the other songs in the challenge, music for me is never a contest but more an expression of feelings and the spirit.

Although I must say you have my vote, this sounds GREAT!! Thanks for sharing, very cool song.

Thanks Bobby. It wasn't a contest..... just a challenge to dust off the guitar, sharpen the pencil and write a song in a specific time frame on a topic and post the results.  So far, no one else here has posted anything to indicate they are interested in this challenge..... someone still may.

Did she get in on any of this wintery weather down here in TX? It's been in the mid to low 30's with rain, sleet and snow for the last several days.

Yeah.... her father in law was in the hospital there for triple bypass and that happened Friday, they had standby tix to fly out yesterday. the weather was getting worse, and they were bumped from the original flight at 11am.... the next at 2:50 had seats, but the 5pm was canceled due to weather and the folks on it got first dibs on the open seats..... they did manage to get 2 seats  at the very last minute and got home safely at 6:15 or so last night.... had that not worked out they would have likely been stranded there for several days.

She's a big history lover and we had visited there in the spring and took the time to go look at Dealy plaza and the book depository..... she was able to be there for the 50th and see it from the hospital close by ..... so that was the silver lining to the entire trip.

When I closed my eyes, I thought I was listening to Neil Young with the way you handled the vocals.  It is smooth and polished and ready for mass distribution (maybe Santa can help).  Very well done, Herb!

I just listened to the 2nd mix, and would echo the comments of Lynn....definitely a Neil Young vibe to it. Very nicely executed and crystal clear production. Oh, yeah, and would agree with the hot choc/whiskey comments from Walt and Kev!

Lynn: Thank you for the kind words. I sent this to Nashville songwriter's association for review and comments. The song was given a thumbs up and placed on the "Ones to watch" list .... no comments about needing to fix anything in the song which is a good sign and generally not the case for most stuff I send them. "Santa" shops for Christmas songs in June and July.... and most big artists either write their own tunes (more money in their pockets that way) or they do the old standards ( don't have to play royalties or license fees) so it's extremely difficult to get new and original Christmas tunes published. I know a publisher who handles nothing but Christmas music so he'll be getting a package in the next few weeks. You never know..... BTW, he passed on The Best Christmas.... which I thought absolutely rocked and also got a thumbs up from NSAI.
