Cinematic/Film/Ambient track Work in Progress

I have a cinematic/film/ambient style track - a Work in Progress, so would appreciate any constructive feedback on what sounds right or wrong.

Thanks.

It looks like you removed it?  There are no recent tracks on your soundcloud page at all.  Or maybe you uploaded it as a private track?

I was able to listen to it now that you've changed the link, but I can't comment on it or like it on soundcloud, because it's private.  So I'll do so here instead. :)

This is a sad song.  The kind of track that swells up right after the main character in a movie watches someone they love die.  Impeccable production work, beautifully written.  A+!

Thanks Walt for trying again :-)   I really appreciate the comments.   Indeed, it is meant to be sad - when I put it up live I will explain the background.

I think this is a well crafted etherial ambient kind of mix..with the cinematic being less apparent but there just the same...I like the way you wove it all together with strings and piano. I would maybe try to get some spread in those string parts and bring them front just a little...not much...and using eq instead of volume. IOW maybe bring out the mids ever so slightly more and experiment with backing off the reverb on the strings just a pinch...at this point it seems that it's these little things that could make a difference depending on how "ambient" you want the track to be. I think you could still keep it ambient and remove some of the reverb fluff. Finding the right reverb can be a real challenge. There is no harm in using more than one reverb to augment certain parts. If you can seperate the string parts take the individual parts and pan them to 20% or more to get a spread between instruments.

Great job on the song! :))

Thanks Starise for that excellent feedback. There is quite a bit of reverb there. I use 2 instances of Aether with different levels on each instrument. I'll play around a bit more with the strings.

    Hi Steve,

This is an excellent piece of "work in progress."

Could I assume that as it develops, it would become a longer composition? I see this as a start to something even grander... I am left wanting, no, needing to have more. But that's just me  because I'm a big fan of long pieces of music, especially of this particular genre.

Everything sounds right to my ears. As I say on every song I comment on here, I am listening on headphones so that does have its "problems." Add to that my lack of experience on the finer points of mixing a host of different frequencies and sounds... I know what I like, as a listener, but it's not always what is expected by the more experienced weavers of sound.

I look forward to the finished piece

    cheers

    Steve,
Like Walt said, it is a sad piece, but that can be a good thing also. I'm more into epic than the sad ambient film stuff, but I may have some sad/epic stuff on my sight, who knows. I do how ever like the way you constructed this with just the right instrumentation, to give it the sound needed to go with the photo you posted with the piece. They work together very nicely. Very well done!!
