Circumventing Norton

I'm (perhaps ill-advisedly) using Norton 360.  I realize that it's intrusive and gobbling RAM, but it's doing its job and I still have 2/3 of a year on the subscription. So, miser that I am, I don't want to just buy something else. Another drawback is that you can't really turn it off.  You can, however, uninstall and reinstall it in just a minute or two.

So what I'm thinking is, if I uninstall it when I'm using Sonar, and then reinstall when I go back on the net, do I have any vulnerability issues?

I do not use the product, and their online help is terrible, so I will have to take your word on that. Antimalware publishers are always working to make their product impervious to viruses, so they tend to load first at startup using nonstandard methods that are difficult to defeat. But any good antivirus should have an off switch somewhere to keep it from loading at all if that is what you need.

None of the Norton AV products can just be turned off like you can with your firewall.

In fact, it's difficult to completely uninstall it. It's like a turd that won't flush. But there are downloads at Symantec that will finish the job.

    Yep.
Go on the Symantec site and search for the removal tools. Last time I checked, you needed to download separate tools for each of the programs. Like one for the firewall, another for the anti-virus etc.

There are few programs on earth that can screw up a perfectly good machine like Symantec can.
    It's like a freaking hydra.
Chop one head off and 2 more appear!

    +1 Microsoft security essentials BTW.

I agree. Norton used to be an excellent brand, and Symantec made a mess of it.

When friends or neighbors ask me for help when their computers have slowed to a crawl, I get the biggest boost by flushing Norton and installing a freebie AV product.

Anybody remember the Norton Utilities from 80's? Good stuff.

Yeah, actually, that's why I bought it--I used to have it on my old Mac G3.  Back when I was using Opcode Studio Vision.  Ah, the good old days.

The free Microsoft Security Essentials is rated very high and on a par with Kaspersky.  Everyone likes to bash Microsoft but the MSE is a good product.

I use it and recommend it to my clients.

OK, I did it.  The Symantic removal program seemed to work (at least I think it did) and I downloaded MS Security Essentials and installed that.  Thanks for the assistance, folks.

One thing that I didn't mention before was the fact that when I had a crash in Sonar and went to the task manager and looked at "Processes", the one at the top was always a Symantic routine.  Seemed like maybe that might have been the crash culprit.  We'll see.

    Norton is like the worst.
Initially when I talked to norton they wasted like 45 bucks to sell me software and the rights to uninstall it.....I found removal tools by using google but still It took me over a year to get all off my computer.....

I searched files, registry, folders and still therre were bits and pieces left....every once in a while I still find a left over....and I search very hard.....

I now have Road runner internet services and the CA Anti-virus software comes free.....the older version was not really to bad but they just upgreaded it and it is interfering with EVERYTHING....My computer has slowed down sooooo much cause of it.....I was just cleaning it last night and turning off background services and things...it now better but still.....not a really good choice there.....

Also watch your CC Statement......Norton has tried for the last three years to recharge my card every year and I need to always call my bank and tell them this was not an authorized charge.....

Let them try this year........boy will they be surprised when they find out I do not have a CC Anymore!!!!!!!!!

    but yeah Norton....... not good......

I have roadrunner and used the free CA security package and it slowed my PC down too.  Get the free Microsoft Security Essentials, it won't slow the PC down and works good.

Just an update:  Since I dumped Norton a week or so ago, I've had no crashes (once an everyday, at least, occurrence) and my CPU load has dropped by 20%.
No viruses or other nasties, either.  MSE's a very good deal.  Thanks, folks.

Yeah...I quit using Norton/Symantic when their price got so high... I switched to CA and was satisfied for a while.... they have started the price creep thing too...AND... my daughters screamed when I loaded CA on their laptops because it really slowed them down....(after the free trial of whatever the factory had installed.)

Just recently I heard about Microsoft Essentials and loaded it on my work laptop since the CA license was expiring on it. I also loaded it on my wife's computer since it was the same license. My other remaining computers are all expiring in Feb and so I will be removing CA and going to MSE on them.

I like it alot. I just installed it on my DAW lappy and it works fine.

Another one to watch out for is Spyware Doctor. It's a HUGE install that gobbles up RAM seemingly at random.

Replaced Norton years ago with CA. CA worked well on my XP machine, not so happy with it on Win 7. Using Comodo on my Win 7 laptop. Today CA was all freaking out so  I restored to an earlier image. Pulled CA and installed Comodo, it has some issues... Thinks Har-Bal is a virus. I'll be checking out MS in the morning. My only reservation, If I install MS do I now have to allow every MS update that comes along? I installed Microsoft.net and after it ran a patch I couldn't re-set my clock??? The image was pre MS.net and the roll back fixed that.
