Clean Sonar Install
Hi all, I need to install Sonar Platinum (Lifetime Updates) 64-bit on a new Win 10 laptop - will Command Center handle this or do I need a backup .exe from a while ago? Also I will need some old plugins and instruments e.g. VVocal, Lexicon Pantheon etc. so based on my Win 7 installation I think I need X2, and Sonar 5 and 8. r Any particular order? Any Preferences to save? Thanks! M

Yes, the Command Center will work in this case. Installation order should not matter but since VVocal requires a minimal install of SONAR, I would install it before anything else. All the other discontinued plug-ins may be installed without actually installing SONAR using the advanced install option. Preferences...there could be a fair amount of work depending on how much customization and preset creation has been performed.

Thanks scook! I don't have too much customisation as far as I am aware, so should be OK. Cheers M

Actually, I'm having a hard time remembering which versions had which plug-ins. For X2 should I just install the programs and literally nothing else in order to get VVocal. Then Platinum will take over the bulk of it, then I'll work out why I needed Sonar 5 and Sonar 8.5 - maybe Sonitus and early Synth instruments. I tried Sonar 5 and it didn't have an advanced menu by the time it said it was about to install... Thanks! M

IIRC, when running the X2 advanced install there is a drop down at the top of the component list that has an option called Minimal Install or something similar. This is what you will need to get V-Vocal installed. V-Vocal will not install without the SONAR executable. Here is a list of discontinued plug-ins back to SONAR 8 http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3217211 The Sonitus plug-ins are still bundled with SONAR. I have not run the SONAR 5 installer in over 10 years and have no memory of it.

This post has images of the X2 advanced install screens http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3215866The second image shows the drop down above the component list set to "Custom installation." This is the drop down that needs to be set to "Minimal Installation" to get V-Vocal installed.

OK guys, after 3 days installing Sonar and sample libraries etc. the only synth that's causing me problems is Pentagon I - I've tried to install it twice from X2 but no joy. Any thoughts? Otherwise Sample Magic AB Version 1 consistently crashes Sonar and a few old VST 32-bit Reverbs won't seeem to load into Bitbridge. Almost there I guess. M

The best 64 bit installation is one that eliminates 32 bit plugins altogether. Bitbridge is at best an attempt to make them work in Sonar X64. I say attempt because a) there are no guarantees, b) bridged 32 bit plugins are the main cause for many instabilities in the Sonar Eco system.
If you find bit ridge doesn't work reliably then you could try jBridge which is a paid for 3rd party utility that is known to be a better bridge at times.

Some old plug-ins require SONAR run as administrator. If you don't mind hacking the registry, granting Users full control over HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\rgc:audio software\DXi\Pentagon I will allow Pentagon to load without running SONAR as administrator. Your other old plug-ins may still require SONAR run as administrator. I have no experience with the Sample Magic plug-in.

Thanks guys! Will look at the Bitbridge issue - I know it's a memory hog, Sample AB is a strange one - version 2 works fine, except that it can't find the reference tracks stored on my old machine of course. Version 1 accepted my Serial number but kept crashing ever since. scook Some old plug-ins require SONAR run as administrator. Is there any way to get Sonar to run as admin straight from an associated file? M

Using regedit Any program may be set up to run as administrator by: - right-clicking on the program or shortcut,
- open the Properties dialog from the context menu,
- click on the Compatibility tag in the Properties dialog
- enable "Run this program as an administrator"

OK great - admin lets me load Pentagon, I'll check in combo with regedit. Can't get a noise out of NI B4 or Pentagon yet but I'll check that later...all other synths work fine :-) M

If you are forced to run as administrator, there is no point in changing the registry for Pentagon.

...unless it avoids the nag screen about making changes to the system as an admin? M
