Cloning a midi track closes Sonar X3

Cloning a midi track (Kontakt as my VST) closes Sonar X3.  (although it doesn't seem to matter what instrument is loaded);
audio tracks clone fine.
 
When I hit enter to clone the midi track, I get the pop up window asking if I want to make changes to my computer;  don't ever remember getting that question the gazillion times I've cloned a track. No matter what option I choose, Sonar closes. 
 
I am using 10 tracks of RX2 files.  Nothing to do with the track in question but strange things seem to happen when I have RX files in the mix.
 
Any help/suggestions appreciated.
