[Closed but never solved] Sonar Platinum not loading/crashing silently on load

Hi all,

I came back after Thanksgiving to find that my Sonar install suddenly doesn't load. I don't think I changed anything, except update Melodyne sometime in the last week. I don't recall if I used Sonar since doing the update.

Anyway, if I click on the program shortcut, the mouse cursor whirls once, then nothing. The app doesn't even execute long enough to appear in task manager.

I have tried a roll back to 09.2016, an uninstall/reinstall, and a full uninstall and fresh download of the installer executable through command center. Nothing seems to work.

I also tried booting in safe mode to see if it was driver issues, but the problem is the same.

I also tried disabling all the VST folders by renaming them, to see if it was a plugin issue, but nothing changed.
I get no errors, warnings, nothing, so it's very hard to debug.

Has anyone else seen this?

Chris

I know this might sound obvious, but have you power cycled your PC.  It's possible that an instance of SONARPLT.EXE process is running in the background.  This would prevent Sonar from running (it does on my system anyway).

To check this, right click on your Windows task bar and select "Open Task Manager" and check the "processes" tab

If you have power cycled your PC and Sonar will still not start, try temporarily disabling your antivirus or antimalware software (if present).  Maybe Sonar is being incorrectly deemed as malware and preventing it from running.  If doing this allows Sonar to run, then you might want to add the Sonar Installation folder as an exception.

Of course, it goes without saying, make sure you have all your windows updates installed and drivers updated.

Incredibly difficult to make any diagnosis with out some basic knowledge of your set up.
In other words... Your Specs man.
What are you using for an AI, PC, OS ? You would benefit from putting these in your signature for future questions.

There is a possibility your Anti Virus may be the culprit.
Make an exception for Sonar and the plug in manager itself in your AV exclusion settings.

Thanks for the quick replies. I tried rebooting many times, and also into safemode. As I mentioned above, Sonar never even appears in the task manager when I click it, fails to get a PID in less than the update time of the task manager list. I also tried the anti-virus suggestion, thanks for that. I only run Windows Defender, which I disabled. But no joy there.

Here are my specs: Dell XPS 13 Touch (9333): i7-4500U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Windows 10 Pro always patched // Sonar Producer, Melodyne 4.1, Addictive Drums & Keys, Z3TA+2, Dim Pro // FL Studio Producer 12.4 all plugins + some FL VSTIs in Sonar // FL ASIO driver with either built-in soundcard or Sonoma Wire Works StudioJack Mini // Bittorrent Sync backup to NAS.

My next steps are to remove melodyne, then Addictive Drums. I'd love any other suggestions.

Thanks!

Boot SONAR in safemode...Not the PC. Do this by holding SHIFT while double-clicking the Sonar app. You will then be presented with options to start Sonar with/without each plugin or other configuration variables. Disable one or all until you find which is crashing your app.

Also, make certain your harddrive does not haveany errors. Right-click the drive icon, select proprties, tools, and check for errors.

Lastly, make sure the project you are trying to open has a compatible sample rate with your audio interface. You can run Sonar without opening a project and change your audio card prefernces, if you have to, to match your audio interface...

That's all I can think of, without any more details...

Re: Sonar Platinum not loading/crashing silently on load 2016/11/27 15:39:03 (permalink)
Thanks, I just tried the Sonar safemode now and it is no different. If I click the SONARPLT.EXE file the Win 10 waiting circle pops up for about 0.5 seconds the goes away, and absolutely nothing else happens. Holding down shift doesn't do anything different -- the app doesn't progress in loading far enough to even pop up the dialog. I remember using it before so I know what I am looking for. The EXE is simply dead. This is my 2nd full install of Sonar in 24 hours and it's still dead. It's not giving me any data whatsoever to tell me what's wrong. No loading, no errors, no process ID, nothing.

BTW, I am using the 64-bit version since my OS is 64bit. I could try installing the 32bit version...

Scanned my SSD, no errors =/

I also tried rolling back from 2016.10 to 2016.09 and I get this intriguing error:

When I tried this yesterday, %1 was "iZotope_Radius_x64.dll" but i have since reinstalled twice, and now it is giving me the unpopulated wildcard instead. I did a whole google search for "iZotope_Radius_x64.dll" and learned what it was (cool, introduced in 2006 for realtime stretching) but no evidence of others with issues with the file.

Sometimes its not enough to disable your AV. Exclude it instead.
I also recommend running Windows update as Melodyne Requires up to date Runtime Library's for C++ .
Make sure you have them installed.

Thanks again for the ongoing help, I added SONARPLT.EXE as an exception in WinDefender. No change.

I ran windows update and all I got was some WinDefender AV definition updates, but checking installed apps I see that I have a C++ version dated today, and another dated October:

so all good on that front.

Yes, everything else as far as I can tell. FL Studio works fine, the Addictive Drums Standalone, VLC Media Player, MS Word, and Google Chrome on which I am writing this now.

Re: Sonar Platinum not loading/crashing silently on load 2016/11/27 18:51:25 (permalink)
So I tried uninstalling all Cakewalk products, deleting all cakewalk directories, and downloading command center again. When I do so, I got this error:

After which I went into Windows Add/Remove Programs and did an uninstall=>repair on the latest x64 C++ Redist, as above. That allowed Command Center to install. Using the fresh install of command center, I then reinstalled Sonar. That went off without a hitch. When I launched the app from Command Center though, I got the error 216 I posted earlier. Now when I click the SONARPLT.EXE file, I get this additional Windows error:

I then uninstalled the C++ Redist Update, and that didn't make anything better. Also now Command Center doesn't run. Unlike Sonar, it actually gets a PID and appears in Task Manager, but disappears after about 2 seconds.

I'll reinstall the C++ redistributable and report back.

Downloaded the latest C++ redistributables from MS, and they installed. Command Center still loads momentarily and then drops from memory. Trying the Sonar stand-alone installer now...

Re: Sonar Platinum not loading/crashing silently on load 2016/11/27 19:38:19 (permalink)
OK so I installed Sonar with the standalone installer. It installed fine, no errors. Clicking OK with "launch the application" ticked gives me the error code 216:

If I then click the EXE after that, I get the blue Windows Compatibility warning.
I tried running different compatibility settings and nothing worked.

I looked up the error code 216, and found this recent post for a different application (no connection to Sonar):
https://github.com/Microsoft/vscode/issues/10592
where the last comment says try running the installer with the firewall off. I tried that, and now I have reverted to the original problem where Sonar gives no errors and just silently fails.

Exciting development!  I uninstalled Sonar 64-bit and installed the 32 bit version. It installed fine, and actually ran! I get this single error about the start screen:

But otherwise I was able to get Sonar x86 to open projects and play them. (most plug ins were missing, but for what was there it worked fine).

I don't know if anything I have posted rings any bells for anybody. Any additional help would be great.

I am going to do a windows repair and see if that helps, otherwise I might have to bite the bullet and do a fresh install.

I believe someone already mentioned rebooting your PC, but did you do it before you tried executing Sonar in safe mode?

If you open up task manager, you should only see one version of sonarplt.exe running. Sometimes when Sonar hangs, I've noticed that trying to run it again opens multiple processes, none of which will work. I usually kill all running instances and reboot.

The only recommendation I have left is to try that, and reboot your PC. Then execute Sonar in safe mode, as I described earlier (With the shift key). When asked (if you get that far), load the app with no plugins (There should be a dialog that allows you to cancel everything all at once). Aside from that and a hard drive issue, I've got nothing else. Running Sonar in 32 bit mode is not the answer, because without doubt Sonar 63B should run in a 64 B Windows 10 machine...

The reference I made to 32B was in reference to TTS-1, because it is a 32B plugin and it won't run using bitbridge on a 64 B machine, without changing the processor setting. Sorry for the confusion... I was replying to a different issue and posted the 32B thing in the wrong section.

You say you got 8meg so I am assuming you have Windows 10 Pro 64bit.  However, can you actually confirm that it's the 64bit version of windows installed.  Of course, if, it's the 32bit, then all you will see of that 8 gig is 4gig.

I've looked ahead at your progress and I must say, I have never experienced any of these (On my WIndows 7 ENT 64bit)

This is not correct. TTS-1 is a DirectX plug-in and SONAR includes both 32 and 64bit versions. SONAR installs the appropriate 32 or 64bit version depending on the version on SONAR installed.

Thanks, intriguing idea, but I built this system from scratch myself and didn't install most of the Dell bloatware.

I don't know if any other programs mess with these overlays.

Yep, have tried the sonar-shiftkey-safemode, the app still terminate immediately without any evidence of creating a process. Nothing appears in task manager. There are zero instances of sonarplt.exe. (I uninstalled the 32bit version (which worked apart from the start screen) and reinstalled the x64 version. )

Rather than start Sonar in safe mode, Try and Re personalize by holding down CNTRL + Start Sonar.
You will then see a message about re personalizing Sonar. accept (Yes).
Let it rescan. The Libsef is the Dynamic Library I believe. This should get you in to Sonar.
I also would re name your folders back to originals. When problem solving like this, the last thing you need is another issue to figure out.

Thanks this was a good suggestion, but no cigar. I followed all of the steps, but the installed app is still invalid and doesn't run.  My leading theory now is that something else I installed messed up my C++ environment and it's too deep to figure out. I'm going to clean install -- in retrospect that would have taken half the time I have already spent on this. Thanks for your help, and everyone elses!

Hello all from a "new" PC =)

I gave up on this issue and reinstalled Windows. Everything works again, of course.

For those interested, it took 5.5 hrs from start to finish, including backing up all my data, downloading the Win10 installer, doing the install, adding all apps (Sonar, etc, and FL Studio) and purchased plug ins, and restoring my data, to the point where I could load my current Sonar project without errors.

Thanks to all who jumped in and tried to help. It is a bit of a bummer that I didn't get to the bottom of the issue and didn't learn anything. Thanks for all the help!

Re: Sonar Platinum not loading/crashing silently on load 2016/11/30 03:41:24 (permalink)

After this ordeal, I hope you look into creating an image file of your C drive once everything is working again. I use Acronis on my DAW and I use Macrium Free on another computer and it actually works about as well.

If you would have done this you could have simply returned your boot HD to previous state, last saved image. Of course you'd lose any new data stored on your C drive. Yet you could always backup that on a 2nd computer if you have one. DAW are complicated systems and every OS will eventually get corrupted, to the point you give up troubleshooting and just start all over.

I’m a little excessive, I save images files every time I make any change to my system, so I can backtrack if needed. System restore is supposed to do this, but it doesn't’ always work. Image files or even a 2nd HD that’s an exact image of your good HD will suffice. I keep my C drive very lean about 50 gigs, the backups are 24 gigs.

Hope things are going better for you now.
