Color code multiple channels going into one Sonar track
I am a Hauptwerk (organ) user and I have five keyboards, assigned to MIDI channels one through five, going into my sound card (RME 9632) as one MIDI in. They appear in Sonar as one MIDI Track and one AUDIO track (which is what I want). When editing in piano roll view, it is impossible to tell which notes are from which keyboards (channels). If the different channels were color coded, it would be so much easier to edit without double checking which notes are from which channels through right clicking on the notes. Perhaps this has already been offered in a recent update. If it has, would someone let me know which one? If it has not, is this the appropriate place to mention this as an improvement or would you tell me where to send this suggestion? Many thanks, Randall Mullin

I know you said that you have the layout you like, but if you use a separate track for each keyboard you can assign different colors but still edit / view them in one PRV.

I am an organist and although there is a lot about Sonar that I do not understand or need, I am able to follow simple instructions and have been able to edit MIDI files with PRV and make WAV files from them for years. I am using Sonar Professional and am currently enrolled in the monthly update program. Would someone be willing to explain to me, step by step, how to assign each of the five channels of my organ setup, which are going into one MIDI in on my sound card, to five separate tracks on Sonar. I am using the program Hauptwerk as a Vsti plugin into Sonar. That is, I use Sonar to control Hauptwerk so that I can make MIDI files, edit the files in PRV and then "bounce them to clips" to make WAV files. The end result would be, as DRanck mentioned, to end up with one PRV which shows each of the five channels in a separate color. Many thanks, Randall

The problem is Sonar and MIDI are port based. Each port can have 16 channels. What you are doing is merging all your keyboards MIDI outs to one port. Then you are assigning all those channels to one track. You need to assign each channel to its own track. Those tracks can be assigned to one synth or multiple synths outing to multiple audio tracks. Each MIDI track will use the same port as input but each channel will go to its own MIDI track. If you have questions please ask.

Since the five channels are merged at the soundcard, how do I tell Sonar to create five separate tracks out of the mix? Is there a tutorial that can show this or can it be explained in a step by step manner? (e.g., go to this menu choose this option, then go to this menu and choose this option. The final result will be five separate tracks, one for each keyboard, which will be merged into a single PRV view which will show each channel in a separate color.) Many thanks, Randall

Set each track's midi input to the proper channel. So if you want to record your Great manual which is set to say midi channel 3, you would set that track's midi input to channel 3. Now that track will only listen to midi messages on channel 3. If your pedalboard transmits on channel 5 set it's input to channel 5, and so on. When you are recording, make sure you have record-enabled all of the tracks you are using. See "To assign input ports and channels to MIDI tracks" here: https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR%20X2&language=3&help=Recording.30.html#1141632 Hope that helps!

You create the tracks. Its the channel that matters in this case. Just set each track to the channel you want it to be.
