Come on People Meet "The Incredible Mudd"

The late Bill Britt and I recorded this song at home on a Teac 2340 and it was mixed down onto a Teac 2300 sometime in the mid 70’s.  I’ve been digitizing some of my/our old tunes, and I remembered how much fun we had doing this one.  Unfortunately the tape it was on was badly degraded, but I think I managed to salvage it.

Based on comments made when I posted ‘Senator Jones,’ another old tune of ours, I decided to try writing a drum track to it.  That turned out to be quite a task, as the closest I could peg the tempo was 134.87 bpm, and even at that there is a bit of drift towards the end.  Bill played bass and threw in some lead riffs, and I did the vocals and rhythm guitar.  I’m including the lyrics in the post because it is an old recording. I still think it’s a fun tune, and hope folks will enjoy it.  Thanks to Bapu, Grant and Danny Danzi for some tips and encouragement.

The Incredible Mudd

Step up folks don’t you be afraid
The big guy’s strong but he’s really tame
Hurry, hurry, we’re about to begin
And you won’t want to be the last one in
Just a quarter’s gonna’ get you inside
To see the strongest man alive
I know you’ll dig it, ladies that’s no jive.

Come on people meet the incredible Mudd.

Strangest thing that I ever seen
He destroyed a bar down in New Orleans
Picked two fellahs up off the floor
Knocked down the bar and tore out a wall
Strong as a man could ever be
And now he’s here for you to see
Just two bits will turn the trick for you.

Come on people meet the incredible Mudd.

Mudd’s gonna’ do some tricks for you, folks
Mudd’s gonna’ break some bricks for you, folks
Mudd’s gonna’ bend some rails for you, folks
Mudd’s gonna’ chew some nails for you, folks
We’ll be in town for a week
And I hope that you’ll all come and see
Come and see us again.

Come on people meet the incredible Mudd.
Come on people meet the incredible Mudd.

    Hey Phil,

This really turned out great considering what you had to work with. Drums really brought this tune to the next level and the drum edits you've made since we last talked about this are perfect for the tune. Fun tune that I really enjoyed. Ah the 70's....how I wish we could go back there with the new techniques in audio that we have today. :) Great job on this brother....from the heart. Bill would be proud of you! :)

Cool song except for the lead guitar mix ,  in my ears it would sound better if the volume level on your guitar track was louder .
The guitar sounded weak  , nice song I like it .

    Hey, Phil,

How are you, buddy?  Doing great, I hope!

This is a dynamite foray back into the early 70's, and you did an especially great job with the drum track, and definitely succeeded very well with matching the "vintage" vibe of the remaining original tracks.  The vocals sound fantastic and you did a really nice job on the "resurrected" mix.

Very nice work, have a great weekend!

Don't hate me, but this almost immediately reminded me of "Snoopy vs The Rad Baron (Christmas Bells).  It sounds authentically vintage, which is amazing that today everyone spends huge $ to sound kinda cheesy and lofi!

Not a style I listen to much, so maybe I shouldn't comment, but I think you did a good job here mixing the old and the new and making it sound like authentic.

Danny- Thanks a bunch for the kind words and your help with the drums.

Robby- Thanks man, but that dude looks more like he'd be selling used batteries on the streets of Mumbai than a circus strongman.   And wherever do you find all those images???????????

    James- Hi and thanks.

Bob- Many thanks for the compliments.  All's well here, and hope the same is true for you.  We're actually beginning to see the ground here again.  Did the thaw hit Scranton yet?

Grant- Thanks.  It's always good to hear that something that old can still work.

James- How could I hate you?  I'm just trying to figure out whether to be insulted or flattered .  Well, let's see: those guys got over 1,000,000 views on Youtube, so, ok, I'll be flattered... we're good.  Maybe PM me and let me know for sure

Mark- Thanks for the listen, and the nice comment on the lyrics.

    Scotty- Thanks so much.

Paulo- Thanks for the listen, and I'm not even sure what style that is (pre- 80's?????)

    Janet- Thanks for dropping by.

    Tom- Thank you.

    Philz,

It seems that some people here may not have read your post and fully understood that you had a reel-to-reel two track master of the song. You did some EQ and then added a drums track.

Very ambitious to say the least.

The results were superb (as I got to hear the original).

Hey Phil, this is great - it really rocks along nicely.

And that's very interesting to hear how you went about digimatising it, it's still got that lurvely vintage vibe though mate.

Ed- Thanks, as always, for your kind words, advice and patience.

Strummy- I'm glad you liked it.  There's a ton more vintage where that came from.  I'm just not sure how many I'll be posting.

Wow!  Astonishing romp to my ears ... this certainly brings back the memories of the era ... guitars and lead voc rule!  Also, the song feels perfect, the vox in its southern-like simplicity ... the hook sticks!
