Compatibility w/ Edirol UA-4FX soundcard?

I'm running Sonar 6 Pro on my Laptop, or trying to, at least. My laptop OS is Vista 32-bit. I've installed the S6 updates up to 6.2.1 (whatever the most recent is as of 1/14/09). I'm trying to record via an Edirol UA-4FX USB soundcard (from Roland). I've also installed the most recent update of the Edirol Driver for the Vista 32bit OS.

The problem is, after I go to the Options -- Audio -- Advanced menu on Sonar to select a WDM/KS driver mode & then to the Options -- Audio -- Drivers menu to select the Edirol as my in and out (as per the instructions from Sonar & Edirol support), I click 'OK' and instead of receiving the 'you need to restart before changes go into effect (sic.)' message the Audio Options Window flashes briefly and then reappears. I.e., it seems like Sonar won't let me make the change to WDM/KS driver mode, etc. When I close the Audio Options box w/ the 'x', non of the changes I've made are not in effect.

This same thing -- inability to make changes in audio options -- happens regardless of whether the Edirol is plugged in or not. Anyone have any idea what might be going on?

I just got fed up with waiting over an hour for customer "support" from Sonar -- what's the story with that? -- and am hoping someone on this forum might have some insight.

Thanks for the help - Tony Swimmingpool

I'm also having issues with the UA-4FX and Vista 32. My problem though is sound quality.... immediate dropouts when recording, and playback of MIDI or Audio is very weak signal, with clicks, pops, noise.

I'm reading around the forum right now but if anyone has any quick and obvious things to help I'd appreciate it!

I'd don't own the device.. .but here's a few things that MIGHT help..

on the side of the unit, there is the sample rate switch .. I notice a lot of people with other things switch down to 44.1 instead of 96k if it's set for that..

if your using asio mode.. try upping the buffers.. e.g. if they are 256 try 512.. etc... you will get more latency.. BUT the sound is normally better if you have a high track count..

does sharing in the background have any noticable effect if it's on / off?

Tony, go into you audio / advanced.. you see the input / output white box with ticks? untick your onboard card (realtek etc) if you have one... in the inputs bit.. and tick ONLY the UA-4FX.. if you don't you can't select asio..

someone who has the device and whose more knowledgeable will probably chime in, thats a few things to try anyway. Or / and contact support as they will be very helpful. Maybe you contacted "customer" support , instead of "tech" support? I deal with them normally via email as that way you the instructions can't be confused.
