Competition - Ears needed! (One Step Closer)
Hi all, There is a songwriting competition coming up which requires a song to be written along the lines of "peace"...vaguely I have to post this on Friday and I am getting a girl to help me sing the choruses which you will hear at the moment I strain to reach! Please offer crits or obvious flaws, no major surgery as I only got 2 days, DUET VERSION FINALhttps://soundcloud.com/ci...t-amanda-kehoe/s-vxbWP Thanks, Cian

Cian, Nice production. The only thing I might do is pull back the reverb levels a bit, that is a personal taste thing, but I feel like it is a hair verb heavy. Will sound good with a female singer blending in on the choruses. Good song. Regards

just the word 'competition' puts me right off. that said, the mix is a bit too 'wide' for me... the voices need some presence on them to get them to 'pop' a bit more... focus on your lowest lows, it feels 'light', for lack of a better word. cool tune cian

Thanks men, I will be doing another mix tomorrow evening when I have female parts. Yes, I know "competition" usually means compromising creativity. I could boost the presence end of vocals but think the culprit is just as much the instrumentation behind them Thanks, Cian

I will be doing another mix tomorrow evening when I have female parts. Um, arg, hmmm, biting my tongue... But seriously - cool tune. Listening on crappy speakers but vocal seems a bit loud and I want to hear more of the various guitar parts and keyboard bits. That's a personal preference though - I like those little bits...

I loved it. The female vocal will definitely add some dimension but Im not sure what I would change. I think its snappy and original.

I think the addition of higher vocals could be a good call, anything that adds vocal interest is a good thing by me. I can't really hear anything that seriously needs changing Cian, it's a great song and anything I can think of is just personal preference, not really fixing anything that doesn't sound good. If I could change anything it would be the abrupt ending, but that might be a major change, and you said you didn't want to go there. That could also just be personal preference soooo, all I really have to say is "Good luck".

maybe your female guest singer could take over parts you're saying 'one step, one step closer, one step closer we are'. maybe start to sing the verses real calme and then build up to the chorus. you just work too hard :) think the key-parts/things could be a bit easier or more to the background. not sure what it is, but the music is a hair uptight all together, or perhaps taking it down just a fraction on the tempo/bpm could make it better. your vocals and melodies are really fantastic, again. don't worry if you should not winn this one, you'll get there surely one day....your voice is no less than Paul Carracks'..

Will keep out a furry ear for the remix Cian, agree the vox is a little to much reverb.

Guys, thanks for your comments Here is the latest version including the female vox, I have just one quick edit before tomorrow and my ears are fried. Better or worse than last one? Still too much verb, lacking lowend, too uptight the whole way, thanks!!! https://soundcloud.com/cian-mcgovern/osc10sept/s-WYnRl Cian

Cian, I think a little bit too much verb yet... I would do one intro chorus solo without the female singer, i.e. bring her in at :30. That gives you a nice intro build with the low vocal, followed by the octave up chorus, followed by the female vox add. There are a few spots where the vocal timing isn't perfectly aligned but doubtful that will be an issue, you can always tighten it up later. Overall, sounds really good. Good luck with the competition. Regards

The female vocal doesn't seem to have its own space carved out in the mix. The chorus sounds a little softer with the added vocal. Still really like the song just don't think the female VOX added much to it.

Thanks guys.
Mark great idea on stepping up. Also where do u hear the verb most on, lead vox? There is delay on those aswell. If there is a timing spot that is obvious gimme the time.
Milamber, I actually agree with u a bit. I found it really hard straight off the bat to fit her voice in its as though it sounded to full, ive aggressively eqd it. I have committed a bit now!
Any other suggestions?

Cian, Right, the verb on the lead vox. I think the backing track is OK as far as verb goes, it is nice and tight. You can really hear the verb depth at :43 when you say "stand up" and again around 2:12 where the backing track quiets down. It is of course a personal taste thing but I think generally these upbeat songs in this style sound better with a tight verb and delay.

Surely this one is better ! 'One step, One step we are' words are a little too loud / too prominent, If that's a seperate track you could cut out some presencse EQ (-0.01db at 5024Hz) and -0.1 at 820Hz (warmth). Or pan them away a touch. But the quality of the song is again so good, hope you keep all the Sonar files/back them up.

Newest mix does indeed sound the best. :) I feel that the fem vox still isn't quite up there with your vox in a few places. Another really catchy track my friend. Good luck, I'm sure you're do well with this!

Thanks you guys. The song is finished for now and sent off. I agree that the female recording wasn't quite what I had envisaged but it still gives the song more interest. Two reasons why I think that, (A) I used the same vocal mic as me which seems to be bass heavy and (b) she didnt know that song that well which led to her not assertively commiting to the vocal as well as if she did. Here is the latest anyway. https://soundcloud.com/ci...t-amanda-kehoe/s-vxbWP Thanks for all your quick responses. Appreciated, Cian
