Complete Novice at Recording - Help Please

I have imported two tracks into a project. I want to lay in a track 3 guitar.
I arm track 3, press record, but for some inexplicable reason track 3 contains both my guitar AND the other two tracks. What is the magic that defines track 3 as unique? It's driving me nutz!

Thank you for your patience.

Paul, you should probably post this under the particular software you have.
