Compound meter / metronome / MIDI quantize question
I'm trying to record a piece in 9/8. I want the MIDI tracks to quantize on 1/8 notes. I want the metronome to sound on dotted quarter notes (i.e., 3 clicks per measure). The tempo is 66 BPM per quarter note (i.e., 22 BPM per measure, or 198 PBM per eighth note). Is SONAR capable of supporting these requirements? I started out setting the time signature to 9/8, but the metronome sounded 9 times a measure. I tried setting the time signature to 3/4, and set Preferences > Snap and Nudge > "Nudge 1" to 1/8 Triplet, but the MIDI tracks quantize to 2 even beats per quarter note, not 3. I ran Quantize on the test recording MIDI tracks, setting Duration to 1/8 Triplet, but that only changed the rhythm to a 2-beat pattern on the first and third 1/8 note (since the recorded notes were already in a 2-beat pattern). Is there a different way to set up SONAR to do what I want?

I'm not sure. I was thinking that the metro would only play the beats like you said it does.... one tick 9 times a measure. As far as the quantize thing.... I have tried to use it in various tunes in simple time signatures like 4/4 and if the tune has a groove to it or is in a swing feel quantize will NOT land the notes where you want them to be. I had to back up, regroup, and use a different method of fixing the positioning of the notes. I no longer even attempt to use midi quantize in my projects. I accept the ones that are off a bit or manually right click the note to open note properties and fix them that way. Oh yeah, I have also done as you tried as well...change the BPM and time sig to try to "fake it out" and that also didn't work well. There is always something that needs to be fixed when that is done. good luck in finding the right way to do this....

It seems that it's really only the Metronome settings that are not doing what you want. Forget about using triplets, that's not what a 9/8 feel has to it. Set up a simple drum track and program your own click track using somethig short & percussive like a wood block to sound how you want, with a different "click" on each subdivision.

Using 3/4 time signature would be your best bet if using Cake's metronome. Then Quantize to 1/8 note triplets and that will result in notes falling to the nearest '1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) as there are 9 eight note triplets in 3/4 time. 3/4 time producing the click on the 3 dotted eights of 9/8. OR set it to 9/8 meter and record your own click. :)

As mentioned, I tried setting Snap and Nudge "Nudge 1" to 1/8 Triplet over a 3/4 time signature, then recorded, but the MIDI tracks quantized to 2 even beats per quarter note, not 3. Is there some other setting you're using? Quantizing after recording obviously isn't going to work if notes have been erroneously quantized onto the same subdivision of the beat during the recording. I need a record-time configuration that doesn't do that.

Turn off input quantizing and tidy it up afterwards.

Unless it's techno and/or you're extremely confident that you want it that Stiff, don't quantize when you're recording. I just played a 9/8 piano arrpegio over the 3/4 time sig. (metronome representing the dotted 1/4), then AFTER recording, quantized (a clone of the clip, muted original and kept it safe) the clip to 1/8 triplets 50% (Not too stiff, you can do 100% if you must, or to verify proper quantizing grid). FYI- Input quantize can be found in the Track inspector (click the midi track you're recording on to bring focus and the INPUT QUANTIZE is above the arpeggiator section. You can Even set the percentage (0%-100%) of input quantize in the quantize settings below where you choose the note value. When you turn on input quantize, the midi channel record button will show a red Q to let you know it's on.
