Compressor plug-ins ?

Hi all,

I can add compression to single tracks (e.g: vocal, guitar 1, guitar 2, bass, etc.) but what I need to do is to add compression to the finished, mixed wav. When I merge all tracks and save it as a single wav file, how can I bring it back in to Sonar and add compression to this file?

I have these plug-ins - which one is best for what I wish to do?

Sonitus Compressor
Cakewalk Compressor/Gate
Sonic Foundry Track Compressor
Timeworks CompressorX

Thanks!

Someone's out of tune and it's not me 'cause I tuned up last Sunday!

Why don't you just put a compressor on the master bus.
Based on the compressors you listed, I would use the Sonitus, and start with the "Music Complete Mix" preset, or one of the Vintage Presets.

Or - to do what you are asking is also easy.
1: Export your song (mix) to a stereo file.
2: Start a new song - and import the stereo song you just created.
3: Add the compressor, then export again.

Personally - I would just add it to the mix bus.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

Either method ^^^^^ works fine.

I stick the comp and other sweetners in the master buss and let it roll.

Siog, consider this while rocking on the master buss:

1) Make sure your peak levels on the master buss never get higher than -3 dcbs.

2) Then use your 'better' compressor veeery gently: as transparently as possible: Low ratio, Medium attack and release (10 to 30 msecs perhaps), a modest threshold ... don't allow more than 2 - 3 dcbs additional reduction ... and apply up to 2 -3 dcbs makeup gain) ...

3) Then comp again using a potent limiter/maximizer: like Sonar's Boost 11, or a commercial limiter when you can afford it (like a PSP or Slate)

(Another way is to shell out $75-100 on a professional mastering engineer (ME) ... if you think your mix or demo is 'finished', worthy, etc.)

Compression is best used in stages, track, sub busses, then master bus. I blather on about it here: http://woggmusic.com/WP/?p=201
