Computer noise - squeaking sound from computer

I am noticing a faint squeaking sound coming from the lower back part of my desktop.  It is rhythmic, but not 100% consistent.  About one squeak every half second.

I don't know how long it's been going on.  I noticed it today because I heard the same sound on my studio monitors which I was testing out for the first time in months.  I then cranked up my headphones and heard the same sound.  In the process of testing the speakers and headphones I noticed that the same sound was coming from the lower back of the computer itself.

So, the same rhythmic squeaking sound is coming from:

1) lower rear of computer
2) studio monitors (plugged into Delta-44)
3) headphones (plugged into Delta-44)

I have a second sound card (Xonar) but no matter how much I turn it up, I cannot hear any squeaking on it.  So, it seems that only the Delta-44 is carrying the squeaks to its headphones/speakers.

Changing the input and output volume sliders in the Delta-44's Control Panel has no effect on the loudness of the squeaks coming from the speakers (or headphones).  In order to make the squeaks quieter, I have to turn the volume knobs down on the speakers (or headphones) themselves.  Of course, changing the speaker/headphone volume has no effect on the loudness of the squeaks coming from the computer itself.

So. the squeaking seems to originate in the lower back of my computer, and then get transmitted to the Delta-44 (but not the other sound card).  The two main devices in the lower back part of the computer are the power supply (it's bottom-mounted) and the video card.  I opened up the case but couldn't figure out which was the culprit: it could be either the power supply or the video card, or some other part of the motherboard.

Given the symptoms, which do you think is creating the noise?

a) power supply
b) video card
c) something else?

You will most likely have to open the case to try and find where its coming from.

As I stated in my first post, I already opened the case and listened, but couldn't pinpoint the source.  My ears aren't that good!  I even rolled up a piece of paper to use as a makeshift stethoscope but still couldn't tell where the high-pitched sounds were coming from, other than they were loudest when my ear was near the lower back of the case.

Using something like a stiff piece of cardboard you can momentarily stop the fans on both the video card and power supply.  That should identify or rule out them out as the squeaker.

A few years ago I got lazy and instead of building my own PC, I got a premade box, it used to suffer from audio noise as well, turned out to be one of those wires used to connect to extra external ports of my pc case from my motherboard was passing to close to some component that was creating a 'pulse' noise, or vica versa, cannot remember which, but simply relocating an internal cable/wire by a few cm resolved my problem.
I cant remember if it was for USB or audio jacks, too long ago.

I'm pretty sure the squeaking sound isn't a fan, or anything rubbing on something else.  It seems to be more like what some people call "coil whine". (It sounds "digital" to me, if that makes any sense)

I'm wondering if the problem is related to the fact that my Delta-44 is connected to an OMNI I/O breakout box, which runs on US power, for which I have a transformer (I live in New Zealand).  I suppose I could disconnect the breakout box and see if the squeaking goes away.  Next time I have a chance I'll try that.

I know that video cards are often notorious for making strange noises.

    Do power supplies ever squeak?

Fans in power supplies can make a squeaking type of noise, which is not good, is usually accompanied by a vibrating type noise as the fan becomes unbalanced, as it indicates that the fans bearings are worn out or caked with dirt, which results in the fan not working adequately or at all, resulting in an overheating problem which results in your computer not working.
Its easy to tell, its usually the sort of noise you hear from the other side of the room, and is more constant like a drone, that cuts in and out when it feels like it, before eventually becoming constant, before the the power supply literally fries itself.

I found some videos which have sounds similar to what I am hearing:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPU9ENJQSU8
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HFjeUbKVNc

In those videos, the noises are coming from a power supply.  What was interesting is that when I searched for videos on "psu chirp" or "power supply squeaking" etc. I kept seeing the brand Corsair mentioned (more than any other brand).  My PSU is a Corsair.  So at this point I'm suspecting the PSU to be the culprit.

I'm not sure if I should order another PSU, and if I do, should I get another Corsair like mine (so I know it has the right connections), or a different brand of PSU (so there's less chance of noise)?

If I go for a different brand, any recommendations on one that is nice and quiet for Sonar?  My current one is 850W so I wouldn't want to go less than that.

850W is rather overkill unless you plan to use the PS to fry things on too. I cannot see sigs from a phone, but I highly doubt that is required (or desired) for your machine.

Power requirements are usually set by what kind of cards you are using in your computer, with the main one being GPU's these days, you also get better quality components in the higher wattage power supplies, and better surge protection etc, which is why I run 1200W instead of a 850W or lower that I could use.

In addition to the components in my sig, the computer also has an nvidia gtx970, 2 ssds, and 3 sata drives.  So I like to aim high when it comes to power.  Sounds like 850 is not considered high anymore!  A 1200 would be mega expensive here in NZ though!

I agree.  850 watt is plenty for that system.
I have more hardware in mine and only have a 650 watt and it is not overloaded.

Re: Rhythmic squeaking sound from computer - is this power supply or video card? 2016/09/25 03:01:25 (permalink)
I've been coasting along for a month and a half now, not worrying too much about the squeaking until today, when I turned on my speakers for the first time in ages.  Then I heard the squeaking amplified over the speakers.  Yuck.

The speakers are connected to my M-Audio Delta-44 PCI card.  So are my headphones; if I turn them up REALLY loud, I can hear the squeaking on the headphones as well (but I never turn them up that loud normally, so the squeaking is not an issue when using the headphones).  Anyway, this means the Delta card is somehow picking up the squeaking sound and amplifying it.

My other sound card (Xonar) is not picking up the noise.  This is strange, since the Xonar is cheaper, and is positioned even closer to the power supply than the Delta card.  Hmm...

I suppose I could try moving the Delta card to a different PCI slot, but I am worried about creating other IRQ conflict (or are those a thing of the past?)  Also, my case is pretty crowded, so I don't know if there is a free PCI slot in there.  I'm not very confident that moving it to a different slot will help much, since it's picking up the noise when it's 2 slots away from the PSU (and the Xonar is not picking up the noise, despite being adjacent to the PSU).  This, plus the fact that I don't enjoy moving hardware around, makes me reluctant to experiment by moving the Delta card to a different PCI slot.

Are M-Audio Delta cards known to amplify computer noises more than the average sound card (e.g., the Xonar)?  Or is there a chance that certain PCI slots are more susceptible to picking up noise than others, regardless of proximity to the PSU?  What else could explain why the Delta is picking up the noise by the Xonar is not?

Obviously, if I can eliminate the noise, the Delta-44 would have nothing to amplify (for now)... but if the noise turns out to be something like the motherboard or the graphics card (expensive!) rather than the PSU, then I am unlikely to ever fix it.

I'm a bit frustrated at this point, as this noise is discouraging me from using the speakers, which I would like to use for mixing my songs (instead of headphones).

Re: Rhythmic squeaking sound from computer - is this power supply or video card? 2016/09/27 00:59:32 (permalink)
I did some more investigating and found some other clues:

    1) When I drag the mouse (hold left click while moving the mouse), I get the squeaking sound in my speakers (and also, faintly, from the back of the case).  Just moving the mouse doesn't cause any noise, and just left clicking doesn't do it, but the dragging does.  I can even have an empty file, and move the mouse (which doesn't affect the display) and it still squeaks.  It squeaks more if there is text in the document (something to highlight).

    2) Dragging the mouse causes noise if I am selecting text in a document (or files in a folder), but not if I am moving a window around.

    3) It doesn't matter how loud the monitoring output on the Delta 44 is; the squeak is always the same volume.  If I adjust the volume knobs on the speakers themselves, though, the sound gets louder and softer.

    4) It doesn't matter if the mouse is plugged into a PS/2 port (via an adaptor) or a USB port; the noise is the same.

    5) I recorded a few seconds of output from my Delta while triggering the noise with the mouse.  I then normalized it so that you can hear the sound well.  Here is the audio:

    http://tripalot.com/issue...160927-delta-noise.wav

As you can hear, the left channel has a loud hum.  In the right channel you can hear the squeaking sound.  To me, it sounds like one of those old dot matrix printers.

So, the Delta is picking up the sound (and that hum), and the speakers are picking up the sound, but the volume of the sound isn't affected by the monitoring level sent from the Delta to the speakers.  Very strange!!!

Do these clues help identify the possible cause of the noise?  And, ideally, a fix?

I've been doing some more tests, and I'm pretty sure the problem is coil whine in the power supply.

The main "clue" is that when I change the power mode to "power saving", the buzzing mostly goes away.

So, I'm now back to trying to decide which PSU to get as a replacement for the Corsair DX850.

Since the Corsairs are notorious for coil whine, is there a particular brand that isn't (without costing too much)?

I received a new sound card, a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4.  It uses USB (while the Delta is PCI).

I plugged my speakers into it, and am getting the same computer noises.  And, as with the Delta, it does not matter how high the Scarlett's monitor output knob is set.

So, as long as the speakers are plugged into either the Delta or the Scarlett, they pick up the computer noise.

    This is very frustrating!

    I'd swap out the power-supply.
If it were fan related, it wouldn't be "transmitted" thru the audio interface outputs.
If your power-supply is in the lower back section of the case, that's almost surely the culprit.

Ground issues are also common sources of noise.

I've seen poor quality USB cables introduce "digital hash" type noise.

Yeah, I think the power supply is the source of the noise.  It doesn't bother me too much, except that the noise appears on the speakers too, which is MUCH louder than the noise out of the back of the case.  That's why I was hoping that by switching from the Delta PCI card to the USB Focusrite interface I'd be able to avoid the speakers picking up the noise.  But that's not the case!

Could balanced cables help in a situation like this?

I tried a different mouse, and connecting the mouse to different USB ports.  None of that made any difference.

Also, when the computer first starts up, it always lets off long SQUEEEEEALS, and this time I had my speakers on and hear the squealing really loud in them too. So, every time the back of the case makes noise, the speakers amplify it.

You are connecting to your studio monitors via balanced cables, correct?
Using balanced cables will help minimize induced noise.
That said, I don't think it'll eliminate the noise being discussed here.
If the PS is making that much noise, it should be replaced.

I found some balanced cables, and switched to those.  The noises went away.  So far, at least.  It could be a coincidence, though, since I didn't listen to unbalanced cabled immediately before switching to the balanced ones.
But at least there is some progress, even if it turns out to be short-lived.

Okay, the speakers are quiet now, but the back of the computer is still squeaking frequently, not necessarily when I am moving the mouse.  I am currently downloading and ripping at the same time, and the squeaking is pretty constant.  Very annoying!

I am currently considering getting one of these:

    a) EVGA SuperNOVA G2 750W ($209 NZD including shipping)
    b) EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850W ($279 NZD including shipping)

Is that extra 100W worth the extra $70 ?

And are the SuperNOVA G2s good for a Sonar DAW?

To me it sounds like you are hearing two different noises and just associating them. Seems like a fan problem and a ground problem.

+1, the power supply fan is something that cannot be cleaned thoroughly unless taken apart, but dust will commonly make them wobble or even make contact full time. The noise from them is simple vibration and/or wear contact. If you want to take that apart, they are simple to clean/lubricate. This guy shows the entire disassembly - https://youtu.be/uqwgUtcXjPM You want to clean the entire fan portion, as well as lubricate the contact surface.

The power supply is about 6 years old.  Yesterday it (or something near it) was really noisy, squeaking like crazy most of the day.

I went ahead and ordered a new power supply (EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850W).  If that doesn't fix the problem, then maybe there's something wrong with the motherboard or the video card, neither of which I am eager to replace!

If the two noises are in perfect sync, the issue isn't a fan.

The noise of fan bearings going bad is (obviously) cyclical
Can sound like a repetitive "squeak" to more of a "grind" (especially smaller/higher RPM fans).
If you've ever heard the sound of grinding brake pads... it's similar.   LOL

In either case, the OP would want to swap out the power-supply.

Yeah, I sure hope a new PSU is the silver bullet!  The high-pitched shrieking is really annoying, since I am on this computer all day!
