Computer will not start until several attempts are tried? Please Help

Hi, for about 2 weeks my computer has not been starting right. It shuts down fine. When I try to start it up by pressing the button on the tower the green light turns on but the monitor will not. also there are no beeps and if I put a disc in the dvd drive it will not read it. Next I turn it off by holding down the button on the tower then turn it back on, I have to repeat this several times. maybe 15 minutes of doing this the monitor will come on but the screen will stay black. so I have to forcefully power it down a few more times until the tower and monitor turn on and it makes me choose to start windows normally or what not. Then the computer will start up and monitor will start up. some times it will go to the blue screen and restart while trying to start. eventually it will start like maybe after 20- 25 minutes of doing all of the above. When it eventually starts its like there is nothing wrong. it runs basically perfect. I have ran anti virus and anti-spyware programs and have ran the check discs I have also ran system mechanic on it and it says everything is working perfectly. This is a pain in the butt. Any Help would be great!! I have a Compaq Presaraio Computer with Windows Vista 32 bit. 2 gigs of memory and a Athlon AMD (tm) 64x2 dual core processor The computer is about 3 years old.

There are times where it will go to the blue screen and freeze. I have to manually shut down and restart when that happens also.

Have you possibilities to test your computer with different ram stick, Power Supply Unit or VGA card ?

Sometimes it could be difficult to find witch component is in cause.

If you have two sticks of memory try with only one.

    Intel QUAD 9550 @ 3.2 Ghz
    Asustek Maximus Rampage extreme
    8 Gb Mushkin
    ATI Radeon HD 5450
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64

And next time you get it running, make sure everything is backed up properly.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Test the PS and the RAM...
Pull all RAM... then install a single stick in the slot furthest from the CPU.
Culprits would be PS, RAM, and Motherboard (in order of odds)

I really appreciate all the responses. Very helpful. I tested each memory ram stick by themselves. It ended up being that 1 of t hem wasn't working and causing all this trouble. I bought a ram stick, installed it and now computer runs like brand new. Thanks a lot,
