Confession
Hey Cakewalkers, I can't hold these guilty feelings in any longer and I must confess to one of the worst sins any DAW user could ever confess to. I knew this would be one of the hardest things I've ever had to tell anyone, so forgive me if i seem a little disjointed. At this time I cant even bear to look this forum straight in the eye (computer screen). It all started when I failed one of my uni modules which sent me spiralling towards retail therapy to lighten my mood. The result of such an adventure meant that I now have an apple laptop instead of my old trusty toshiba. Being in full time education also meant that I was able to take advantage of the discounts offered to students. Unfortunately it did not stop there. Whilst browsing the web for a new version of Windows 7, so that I could bootcamp Sonar, I just happened to wonder over to the apple education store. To my amazement UK students are able to obtain Logic Studio for £124. The same retail version that sells for £417 in UK stores. I hope you understand that this is an offer that no man, woman, child or beast, with an overdraft facility could ever refuse. At the time of writing the installation disks are busy spinning away. I hope you fellow Sonar users will forgive me and that we can still be friends here on this forum. Rodney p.s. I have a sneaking suspicion that my warblings will still sound the same whether they are recorded in Logic or Sonar :)

So you downgraded twice, once from a PC, and then again from Sonar to Logic. That's not logical at all. Now you'll forever be reaching for a right mouse button that's never there, and wondering WHY???

Kroneborge So you downgraded twice, once from a PC, and then again from Sonar to Logic. That's not logical at all. Now you'll forever be reaching for a right mouse button that's never there, and wondering WHY??? Only one downgrade - to Logic. It's a shame the Rodar6 couldn't have gotten a student discount to a far better Mac daw - Digital Performer 7. And as far as reaching for what you call a non-existent right mouse button - that's old hat. You can use ANY mouse you want on a Mac - there's lots of us that use Logitech, Kensington or even Microsnot mice/trackballs. Sadly, Matt you're another one of those around here who have NO idea of what Macs are all about. For that matter - have you even tried one (and I'm not talking about in a store)? Never been happier than making my move to a Mac and DP, although I still keep Sonar on a pc around for old projects should I ever need to re-visit them.

Actuallty I used one for several months when I took a recording class at the local college. Used protools and DP on it. I hated pretty much every minute of it. WTF, I got to throw a CD in the trash to eject it??? And why are all the buttons to close windows on the wrong side??? My mom also has one and everyonce in a while I try and help her out with it, but it's always futile because they don't make sense. In fact it reminds me a lot of how other DAW's were before I found Sonar. And of course let's not mention the fact that you can build the same PC for half the price. So basically you're paying like a grand for the operating system. No thanks,

So basically you're paying like a grand for the operating system. No thanks, Actually Macs do make sense if you actually take the time to learn one. And like your example of the 'missing' right mouse button you are wrong again. Back in System 6 days you had to drag a disk to the trash to eject it but that hasn't happened for a long time, at least as far back as OSX Tiger (and we're now at OSX Snow Leopard). You just right click on a disk icon and select eject from the pop-up menu. I use both systems - pc and Mac and find the Macs a lot easier to get around on, and I'm no newcomer to these computer wars. Been around computers going back to IBM punch cards, through S100 buss machines, dos, Windoze, Apple machines since the Apple 1, you name it. 6 decades on this Earth. The only people I find that have trouble with Macs are those that refuse to acknowledge there is another possibly better way to do things. And age has nothing to do with it. And that old shibboleth of Mac costing twice what a pc does that's pure bs. By the time you get done with searching out what motherboard, cpu, ram, drives, etc. to use (don't forget to factor in the cost of your time doing this), futzing around with getting everything to work in harmony you could be up and running with a Mac for just as much money. PCs - you got to worry about every little thing; Macs don't have that problem. Oh yeah let's not forget one of the biggies with Macs - no need for antivirus software. Not to mention networking with Macs is easier, you don't have to worry about adding and removing drives and using up drive letters. Some people are just fed up with Microsoft operating systems. There's one flavor of Snow Leopard unlike who knows how many versions of Winblows.

FYI, The music program I took was probably in 2002. But when using my mom's mac it didn't make any more sense to me. I freely acknowledge that there are other ways of doing things (better is of course open for discussion). But I'm not quite sure how clicking in the left to minimize a window is better than clicking in the right. Of course I'm sure with time I could get used to the new way of doing things, just like in time I've gotten used to the MS ribbon. That wouldn't mean the new way was better. Moreover, what about all the time to become proficient in the new way? IMHO, to justify the time to learn a new way of doing things the new way has to be MUCH better. As far as costs go, I like looking up computer stuff and reading computer articles. But if I didn't have the time or inclination I would go see Jim and let him build me one, again for much less than a Mac, and I would't have to worry about all that stuff. And to be honest, I really don't worry about every little thing with my PC. 99% of the time it just works (unless I'm running X1 of course). So to sum, to switch to Mac you spend more time more money, Oh and less compatabily and the benefit is what? No virus protection? I'll give you that one.

"retail therapy" - Love it! As for all this Apple vs. PC stuff, I believe it comes down to this: - People who primarily use their right brain prefer Apples and PC's don't make as much sense, and - Basically left brain people prefer PC's and Apples don't make as much sense. I find related similarities to a person's political views and even choice of cell phones as well. I'm not saying this is a 100% accurate definition, but it's been a pretty good rule of thumb. That said, when one guy claims a PC is superior to an Apple or another claims the opposite, I think they're both incorrect. Apples and PC's are just two different paths to get to the same destination. (For full disclosure, I've worked on PC's since they first came out and used to maintain all the Mac's for a company so I've used both, however the only Apple gear I can personally live with are iPods. So there you have it!)

So when trying to decide between the two, you have to figure what makes sense for you. And if you have Mac sense, if that extra sense is woth extra money. Depending on the poll, I think about 90% of people either think a PC makes more sense, or just don't think the extra sense for a Mac is worth while YMMV

Hey Guys, Nice flavours of conversation going on in here. I didn't expect such a positive response. Love some of your comments 'Studiogate' and 'Original sin started with an apple' etc :) Naively I didn't really take the time to consider the pc v mac debate. I thought that, that had died and gone away a long time ago. I think that the reason I bought my Mac was because it covered the most bases. Portability, CPU power for recording, ability to run Windows, become a member of the SDK apple development programme etc etc etc. Perhaps the pricing is slightly higher but the model I have is very well specked for the price and I have yet to see a PC that can match it. (Latest 13" i7 model). Pls remember I'm also replacing a six year old toshiba laptop. I know that apple upgrades are pricy though which is why I bought 8gb of ram from crucial instead of apple, saving me around £100. As for the left brained right brained debate. Thats a pretty cool observation. I'm left handed which supposedly makes me right brained. Although I do everything else with my right hand/leg/foot etc : ) Anyway I can only give my opinion but please remember I'm not doing it to convert anyone, just letting people know where I am. Whats relative to me, probably aint gonna be relative to someone else. Anyway Logic took 3hrs to install and there is so much to learn again that its gonna take me a long time to become as familiar with it as I am with Sonar. However, you have to consider that for me to run Sonar, I would have had to install Windows 7. For the same price I got a legit copy of Logic. It will have its benefits and pitfalls but so far I'm am very impressed with the laptop. Regards Rodders Edited for siplelng mistakes.

Just about every program that counts that is available on a pc is also available on a Mac (save for Sonar). MS Office? Check. Photoshop? Check. Firefox web browser? Check. Audio interfaces - anything you care to run on a pc runs on a Mac. Ditto for mice, printers, displays. You spend way less time getting a Mac to work then you do a pc for ANY program. When I got my new Mac Mini, moving over from my old Powerbook G4 laptop was a cinch. Network configuration? Internet configuration? Couldn't be simpler - just hookup the Ethernet cable, enter my email address and password and OSX found everything it needed without my intervention - ISP, email server, etc. Can't do that in Windoze. And like I said before - try adding external drives to a pc without a lot of rigamarole - ain't happening. With a Mac you just plug it in and go (as long as the drive is formatted). I've just grown tired of all the Windoze crud. Oh and Bapu: There's only one current flavor of OSX Snow Leopard. Everything else is just like old versions of Windoze (before Snow Leopard there was Leopard and before that was Tiger just as in Windoze land you now have Windows7 which came after Vista which came after XP). How many flavors of W7 are there? Hmmm?

I know there's been a number of computer games that I've seen that didn't have Mac compatability (or at least not at that time). I've also seen the same with plenty of VST. As for plugging in a external hardrive I've never done that. But I put a new interanal one in last night, and it was super easy, especially with the new snap in Sata drives. Also, I'm not sure what programs you are using that take so long to get to work on the PC. 99% of them I just install and go.

I've just grown tired of all the Windoze crud. jack - this statement shows you're just as guilty of being a mac fanatic as those you are calling mac haters. there's no "rigamarole" to add a USB or firewire hard drive to a PC. if it's formatted (your requirement on mac as well) - you just plug it in and it works. I know. I've done it hundreds of times. jack - I'm sorry, but you're being the very "fanatic" that PC users think is so ridiculous about Mac users. You are acting like we're ignorant children because we can't understand what you see in Macs. Please don't look down on us because we are PC users. I do not look down on you because you're a mac user. I accept you as you are. I'm not a Mac hater. I'm not a PC fanatic. I use PCs because that's what I use at work, because that's what I have used for years. I have used Macs in the past and I did not find them intuitive. that doesn't mean that you and all other mac users don't find it intuitive. that's ok. we're different. use the tools you like best!!! but don't start a Mac/PC flamewar with false information just beacuse you're passionate about macs. just use what you like and don't try to convert the PC world if they're happy where they are!
