Confessions - new prog-rock song UPDATED MAY 9TH
http://soundcloud.com/markhaigh/confessions Another piano-led proggy rock song. You can tell I have been listening to Anathema a lot. I hope the mix on this one is a bit better, trying hard to get the bottom end tight - but now I think some of the top is gone, and some mid-range clutter despite some eq cuts and panning - i guess having rhythm and lead guitars and vocals and piano at the same time is tough...well, hope you enjoy, any comments as ever welcomed. Oh, and there is one incidence of swearing for any who may be offended. Cheers. edit - updated mix, hopefully this ihas more prominent bass and less mid-clutter - changes are different bass-amp sim (now Ampeg), hPF on all toms, change of kit (from Steven Slate Thick Metal to his Hybrid kit), piano volume automation to scale back during vocals, change of mastering plugs....

This song is quite interesting and unique in that it's something of a power song led by piano. I don't hear the mid clutter you're referring to, but I do hear a few things. One, I hear the drum tracks very well, especially the bass drum, but I barely hear the bass guitar. The bass drum has a very sharp attack which may mask the bass guitar's attack. Adding a little upper mid to the bass gtr may help bring it out, or separating them by panning could help. Bass drum and guitar don't always have to be perfectly centered. Second, the lead vocal is pretty good. The singer has a Thom Yorke feel, imo, but I couldn't make out the lyrics very well. The piano, while quite well played or sequenced, was a bit too loud and buried the lead vocal. I think if you address these two things, you will have a very good song on your hands.

Bless me Father for I have listened to, and enjoyed this. It's pretty cool because it's like the drummer is playing the piano :-) I was raised Roman Cathardic, but I'm not practicing anymore because I got so good at it. Pretty good lead guitar work, and I particularly enjoyed the fact that you weren't screaming at me ;-) This is one of your better tunes IMO.

I like this a lot - not in the slightest bit predictable. It would be a great song to perform live. Try using a high pass filter on everything but the bass and kick - it should clear up some of the muddyness.

Mmm, maybe your best proggy outing yet Mark, liking this a lot. Loads of power and passion. I liked the Queen-esque piano/chugging guitar breakdown, that made me smile! There's a nice blend happening between the prog stylings, the metal influence, and your slightly Indie-rock vocals - it's working well. More o' this please!

Your singing is getting better and better Mark. This is an ambitious song to be sure. The piano turns into a muddle after a while for me (while everything is going on). The breakdown at ~2:00 is really nice. Too short for a "prog-rock song" IMO.

Well anything Prog gets me sucked in. The mix is too muddy. Start with fixing the drums, they have punch but lack clarity, the vocals are almost coming through. Piano is good. There is a lot of conflicting mid-frequencies going on. I like the track, just work on mix. Good work neb

Yep. Good effort. Great guitar solo. Constructive criticism, yhe mix does need more work, also the vox are too pitchy for me...some rhytmic anomalies as well. The mix doea lack oomph in the bottom end...but keep at it! Maybe get a little help on the mixes to speed up the process! Always glad to hear new prog

TOM - thanks for stopping by, you know we all miss you guys when you're not around! LYNN - thanks, it's great to have constructive crits, I am having to mix a lot on headphones these days, i'm trying to flip between open-and closed back design but still finding it hard to nail that low-end! ROBBY - i would never scream at you! I wish I had your pipes but oh well....DARYL - hey, cheers, i have high-passed most things, but i think i forgot to get it on the toms which will help clear some space. I shall certainly get the hpf on those drums now!

It's a little better. Especially the piano now. Drums still seem pushed too far back. The only time I can really distinguish the bass guitar is the "father forgive me section" and when you go up an octave. The drums are screaming to come out of the closet.

There are a lot of great things going on here Mark. The guitar arpeggios are super fluid. The singing is fine, but you could use a lot more processing to get them in shape (take it from one who knows!). Liked the piano break @1:49, but once the beat comes back in @1:58 it kinda falls apart for a bar or two. The end could be a bit less abrupt.

Mark. Sculpting of the bass. Did you HPF @ 80HZ? If not try that. If you have trying boosting 2-2.5KHz a bit to get some bite in there.

I'm not a prog rock guy - I don't think? But I like this. I would have liked the vocals to be more defined and not layered as much in the music, but maybe that's not in the style of prog? At times I couldn't really understand, but the times I could made me want to understand the parts. i think a dryer or completely dry vocal on this would get the sound I'm thinking of. MGH - could you send me a version of that? I just want to know if my instincts make sense. I won't share, I just want to hear what I think would create the dynamic I'm looking for in this track. Leave the effects on the spoken parts - "father, etc, etc". Otherwise - I have no comments because my talent level doesn't allow for it!

Hey, Mark, Killer job on this cool and very ambitious piece of progressive rock! Lots of really unique twists and turns featured throughout the well textured instrumental performances and the vocals are top notch. I really like how the layered guitar parts and piano actually set a back drop for the vocals and fantastic sounding, constantly rambling bass lines. Dynamite job, Mark, this might be my new favorite of yours. Have a good one, brother! Bob

Listened to this the other day, but didn't have time to comment then. This mix does sound clearer. The vox still sound a little buried to me, but as you know, not really my genre so maybe as they should be. Maybe a little delay on them too for texture ? Love the guitar at 1:49 - just awesome. The piano at the beginning could do with coming down a bit as the difference in volume between that and when the vocal comes in is too noticeable for me - it's like you can actually hear it being turned down rather than it blending in, if that makes sense.

2 ecstatic listens of this British magic. Ah never know what to expect (while glaring at the complex waveform). Intro and 1:00 'confessions' are inspired IMHO. So is 2:00 middle rhythm chuggas. Ah the 3:20 comfort (ps 23). Finale is spot on. The kick freq is up around 120 Hz (with no sub-presence around 48-58 Hz) and the bass-guitar is not coming through on my K701s. (So I might appreciate much a bit more sonic room for the bass-guitar (which I finally hear at 3:55 for a bit) (Also, the killer-vox deserves some more clarity presence (2.5 kHz) ... in the last minute or 2 especially ... probably due to my southern-Alabama accent) These are minor crits as this is the greatest mix I've heard from you to date. I love this exceedingly on many levels, the guitar textures, the killer vox, the drum symphony, the message, love, etc. etc. Should you decide to increase both kick-subs and/or bass-guitar, I'd like to listen again to hear if that would make this soar a lot higher. EDIT: I just observed the comments above and disagree with most (perhaps they listened to a former mix) ... this mix is top-drawer-excellent and 100% awesome to my ears ... the best of the best; its just I, personally, love bass and kick enhancements due to my own hip-hop struggles.

Thanks to all for listening, especially you last few guys for the affirming words - i needed that after trying to remix for a few hours the other day and making it worse, much worse! So i shall give it one more go later in the week, certainly bringing the bass up - Philip, thanks for the specifics, that's the kinda thing i love about this forum!

mgh cool tune, i like the driving relentless feel of it, with the snare pushing it nice solo stuff, it's a bit buried.. i've gotta say, the song is better than the mix gives it. it's got mix issues. i cannot tell from a cursory listen, if it's panning, midrange clustering, frequency masking, eq choices, compression choices, or all of the above. i think the kick could certainly used some low end, tho the top end of the kick is fine to me... and the bass has some hint of super low, but no real low mid... keep working on this one. try some more extreme separation of the guitar parts, if possible... and get the kick and bass really dialed in, with the vox on top, then bring everything else into it. i would not put anything centered, except the kick, snare, and lead voice. try hard panning, just as the experiment of it, strict LCR mixing, just see what it does....
